It is hard to know what came first - the licking or the bumps! My dog licked himself raw alot - so much that we went to a vet. dermatologist (we started with benedryl and ended up giving our golden claritin - all on the derm. orders). There are lots of things that could cause him to lick, could be the grass, bugs, anxiety or it could be something related to his surgery. With a plate and pin and screws, you would think it would feel odd, maybe as it heals, even itchy. So he could just be biting because it feels funny. Besides the benedryl, it really helps to do the soap and water, my dogs all get worse when their tongue lathers up the skin. Just like a kid, you need to keep it clean, keep it dry and make sure they leave it alone (if possible).

We give my 100 pound dog Benadryl for his hotspots. We put 2 capsules in a little bit of cheese and give him twice a day. It really helps his allergies.

My German Shepherd can take 3 25mg capsules once a day-and she is 75 lbs.

That works out to 1 mg per pound as someone mentioned. Never have had a problem with it.
