Consider whether any members of your family would be made uncomfortable eating under an operating fan. I think it would make certain members of my family nervous, with visions of headlines like “Local Family Decapitated at Breakfast by Errant Ceiling Fan”
@Hunt. That would be me. I have a seizure disorder and when I go to a restaurant, I have to really be careful where I sit.
We have ceiling fans in our family room (which is open to the breakfast room), and the master bedroom. Both have very high ceilings.
I guess I’m the odd man out here, but I would not put one above my kitchen table. Very 1980’s.
Love ceiling fans! Decorators don’t seem to find them aesthetically pleasing but I grew up with them and have them in many rooms of my house.
One word of warning, though–They are stronger than you may think and can be dangerous. I have a friend who didn’t realize her fan was running (or just wasn’t thinking!) when she stood up on the bed. She got whacked in the back of her head and made an unexpected trip to the Emergency Room for stitches!
It’s not like you can’t independently turn on/off the fan or the light
Don’t get me wrong–I live in Texas and love ceiling fans. I have one in every room of my house, except the eating areas, kitchen and bathrooms, and I am considering them for the master bath and the cooking half of the kitchen. I just found I didn’t use the one over my kitchen table very much.
I made my profile picture the light fixture that I painted. You can’t really tell much about it, but it was shiny, polished brass before. I plan to change the glass “things” someday, maybe to match whatever I put in the other half of the kitchen.
I think a fan in the kitchen is a great idea but I question whether it needs to be right over the table. If it’s in the room, the air will move. I prefer fans to A/C, as does my wife.
I, too, wouldn’t put one over the table. I spent a couple of hours the other day going through catalogues at our favorite lighting store looking for fans for an outdoor porch project we just finished. There are TONS of options for fans, both indoor and outdoor. One of my favorites was made by Big A$$ Fans. I didn’t end up ordering from them but, wow, they have some beautiful fans. Quorum is another company that makes excellent quality fans. I agree to go to a lighting store where there are knowledgable staff to help you. You’ll need to know your ceiling height so you can be sure there’s sufficient clearance.
OP here. I’ve never actually posted a link, but this is the fan I’m thinking of getting.
Hopefully this will work:

That’s cool!
pun intended.
Yuck yuck…
I have always had one over the kitchen table and see them there in other peoples houses too. It seems like the normal place to put them around here.
@abasket, sounds like you have a house in our neighborhood right down to the sun porch!
I love the Big A$$ fans - too bad they deserve those $ signs!
I wouldn’t put one on the table because I don’t like blowing dust in my food. I’ve not discovered a robot that can vacuum in difficult spot yet.
