“And state schools, some of them have way better dining halls than Cornell.”

surveys say not quite. In fact, Cornell consistently ranks in the top-5.

i think state schools do better in that they have more mall-like food courts…but i went to UTexas’s dining hall (all you can eat) this summer and the food was waaay bland…i’m talking worse than my high school :<

At least there is good variety. I mean unless you have no brbs or cash, u can pretty much go anywhere on campus for a better breakfast, lunch, or dinner. The dining halls are really only convenient for close meals. My fav: Trillium and Macs :)

Hmm. I’m one of those people who needs breakfast, lunch, and dinner (and snacks in-between haha) to function, so I went with the 14 meals/week plan with the assumption that I’d use BRBs once or twice a day. But based on this thread…should I go with less dining hall meals and more BRBs?

I think that you’re fine. I’m the same way; I spent BRBs on breakfast and snacks, and two full meals a day. But BRBs can go pretty quickly if you don’t keep track of your spending. If money weren’t an issue I probably would’ve gone with unlimited meals, which thankfully is included in every west campus meal plan.

Sounds good. I think if I use BRBs for breakfast and snacks, I’ll spend them less quickly. Plus, I’ll probably need to eat at Okenshields for lunch anyway based on my tentative schedule. Thanks for the input!

No one has mentioned Hughes…:(

Their double-stack of pancakes for like $3.00 in the mornings is amazing. Also, lunch is awesome there. Big Mike makes the best burgers on campus.

That probably includes the ala carte stuff which I said was awesome. And the surveys probably only counted North dining halls b/c it’s just not debateble that West dining halls are pretty bad, especially for lunch. Here’s a lunch at West (every single day the exact same thing):

Good salad bar
A bunch of lunch meat
Tiny, prefrozen hamburgers,
Greasy chicken patties
Bad hotdogs

And maybe something else leftover from breakfast or really crappy.

I ate there for multiple years lamost every single day for lunch and it sucked big time. And the West dinners are decent, but I’ve had much better and way more variety at state schools. Actually I think West dining halls have a rotating schedule, so Monday is always the same thing, Tuesday is the same, etc.

not a huge amount of people really eat on West Campus for lunch, its much easier (and better) to grab something at Statler or Hughes or Cascadeli, etc.

Hughes was amazing. Big Mike makes some mean burgers, made even better by the expilcit hip hop blasting in the background and the stereo that lights up with the bass thumps.

what is Hughes? I wonder to myself. google:
[Dining - Hughes](<a href=“Residential Life | Student & Campus Life | Cornell University”>Residential Life | Student & Campus Life | Cornell University)

wow! I had no idea such a place existed! one whole year (I know, big deal say the graduates, but still…) and I never heave HEARD of it! I will make a point of checking it out once I’m back in Ithaca.

So what, I pay for the meal. And everyone else who has unlimited, 14, 10 meals/week pay for lunches as well. Or breakfast but even less people go to weekday West breakfasts.

Hughes is incredible. It has a really quiet atmosphere and the food is great. Somewhat long wait sometimes though.

which dining halls with meal plans accepted are the best?

If you have a finite number of meals/week, can you just go down just to pick up an apple or something, without it counting as a meal?

Can you use 10 one week, and 18 the next with a 14 plan? (Do they rollover, or go by x hundered per semester?)

Meals do not roll over. The dining week is Thursday to Wednesday. If you do not use your allotted meals by Wednesday night, they are lost.

One really sneaky thing about finite meal plans is that they do not roll over after breaks, either. You’re credited x meals every Wednesday or Thursday late at night, and that is all you’ll get for the week. If there happens to be a week long break, you’ve essentially been given, say, 14 meals, perhaps 10 of which you won’t get the chance to use. Yet, you’ve already paid for those 14 meals.

You can’t go down and pick up an apple, and sadly you need to swipe your card (which means you need to use your BRBs or meal plan) in order to get in. I have seen, however, people took >1 apple out (which is technically not permitted).

one good thing is that they allow for sick meals…

i.e. if you’re “sick” and you ask a friend to get you food…all you do is give them your ID card and the dining hall person will give your friend a small plastic takeout thing for your friend to bring you back food.

I have seen some thrifty people take extra food to their table and then store leftovers in Tupperware. Technically not allowed, but good strategy if you’re on a tight budget.

i think 10 meals per week and 500 BRBs is the perfect amount for the semester.

i dont know why they havent increased the BRB value…500 this year wasnt the same as 500 my freshman year!
