Rainman–both my S’s loved this movie Also, Stand By Me.

What a fun thread! I love movies. I don’t have much to add to all the suggestions above. I like older movies myself. When I lived in NYC years ago I saw many Hitchcock movies at a festival. Lifeboat is a truly great film - if you haven’t seen it do so.

When I was in HS, back when dinosaurs roamed, my mom told me of her own HS fave - Death takes a holiday. I saw it years ago and it did not really grab me.

I Know Where I’M Going, Animal Crackers, The Women(39), Topsy Turvy,Abe Lincoln in Illinois, Mad Max, Gentlemen Prefer Blondes…

Well you guys make me want to run to the nearest Blockbusters! Lots of great ones mentioned here.

and my daughter’s favorite

Lilies of the Field

Good stuff!

We’ve also watched many of the other movies named already. Again good stuff!

I always let my son know when there are old 1950’s science fiction movies on. We watch them together and get a good laugh at the special effects.

Gun Crazy ('50), The Picture of Dorian Gray, The Night of the Living Dead, Them, Spartacus,
The Girl Can’t Help It, Amarcord, Killers Kiss, Witness for the Prosecution, The Big Clock, Hannah and Her Sisters, The Great Escape, The Thief of Bagdad…

Another movie my son loved - we watched it because he was going to be a lawyer for some school activity and he wanted to know about how trials work - was 12 Angry Men. Great movie!

Personally, I love all those 1930s tapdancing extravaganzas. I don’t think they’d appeal to my sons though!

Lo Sciecco Bianco, Il Gattopardo, Elmer Gantry, The Sweet Smell of Success, Criss Cross, A

My family’s quirky favorite:
The Hallelujah Trail
We are also big To Kill A Mockingbird fans.

Oh, yes! It’s A Mad, Mad, Mad, Mad World! Except that movie has been essentially replaced in its entirety by its non-remake remake, Rat Race. Even I think it’s funnier. We have had literal ROFLs from that.

Another movie in the same vein that’s surprisingly good (given how badly it bombed at the time): 1941

Some movies I HAVEN’T watched with my kids, that everyone might like (or at least might be worth checking out): Romancing The Stone, Prizzi’s Honor, The Right Stuff (fabulous movie!), Lost Horizons, Royal Wedding, Flying Down To Rio, Our Man Flint, any of the Sergio Leone spaghetti westerns with Clint Eastwood.

I haven’t gone back and checked the whole thread, but am I right to notice that no one has mentioned any of the repertory-movie stalwarts of our youth?: Gone With The Wind (my sister saw it 7 times before she was 18; I’m sure my kids have never seen it); The Wizard Of Oz (because, of course, we have ALL watched it with our kids); The Rocky Horror Picture Show (kids have gone to screenings of that; son will sometimes perform “Time Warp”).

I just assumed that EVERYONE has seen the stalwarts.
And JHS…thanks for mentioning the fabulous films of Whit Stillman. (Metropolitan et al)

Repo-man, Raising Arizona, The Bad and the Beautiful, Dangerous Liaisons, The Snapper,
High Fidelity, Red River, The Secret of Roan Inish, Eight Men Out (fyi perfect for world series week), A Bronx Tale…
