I think I can beat most of these. My dad bought a tuxedo at Paul Stuart in 1949, when he joined a fraternity in college and needed one for formals. Classic shawl collar, soft shoulders. Around 1973, he bought another tux in a more modern style – it was hideous, both then and in retrospect – and gave me his Paul Stuart tux. It had to be shortened and let out a bit for me, but it did yeoman’s work at proms, charity balls, and deb parties in the seventies, and then more professional events in the early 80s. I, um, outgrew it sometime in the late-80s, and it stayed in the closet until my son started going to proms in 2005. Shortened a bit more and taken back in for him, it made – and still makes – him look like a young Sean Connery as James Bond. What a sensational suit!

Do old tee shirts count, too? Because I think I have an old Bobby Sherman tee shirt somewhere that I may never throw out.

I still wear my grandfather’s cardigan around the house. He died 43 years ago, but was one of my favorite people in the world so I put it on when I need comforting.

I have a lot of old clothes. Probably the oldest thing I bought for me is a leotard from high school (graduated 1973), but I don’t have much cause to wear it. It the clothes from my parents that are really old. Last year I went to a dance wearing a beautiful very classic blue velvet dress my mother wore to the White House sometime when Carter was president. I have some Land’s End short sleeve cotton sweaters that look like they date back to the 1960s, but I don’t actually know how old they are. I think the oldest thing that I still wear for fun occasionally is my Dad’s Marine Corps jacket and shirt - that goes back to the Korean War! I have a beautiful winter Loden coat from German - got it in 1989. It will last forever. I have a poodle skirt (except it has appliqued lions) from my Mom, unfortunately it doesn’t fit any more, but I wore it in high school, before all my bones got expanded by kids.

The oldest item I can think of for sure is a college t-shirt that I tie-dyed on the first Earth Day in 1970. Also, when I started work in the 1970’s, my Mom still sewed suits for me. I have one terrific three piece pantsuit that I’ve saved, since it was hard to give the others away.

I had a Burberry trench coat which my mom bought in England about 40 years ago. I took it when I was helping her clean out her closest two years ago. When I realized I wasn’t wearing it at all, I brought it to the consignment store. Got $150 for it.

I don’t think I have anything more than 10 years old. I try to go through my closets at least once a year and get rid of anything I haven’t worn for several years. I think debate about keeping a few of these things but I know deep down it’s unlikely I will ever wear them again so out they go.

My H had a suit from early 1960s–it fit S perfectly. S wore it for a while and has since bought his own.

My older d sometimes wears a cashmere sweater that was my mom’s, Jaeger of London with the short zip-up in he back that my mom bought on a trip to the U.K in the sixties. We also both wear an Irish sweater-cardigan with the brown leather buttons that my cousin bought me from her honeymoon in 1966. I have a lovely linen-like print blouse that I bought in the summer of 1981. I remember it well because my college roommate had given birth in Feb that year and we went on a shopping trip together that summer. If I think harder, I know that I can come up with a few more.

Sweetbeet: thanks for a fun thread!

My oldest regularly worn items:
Edwardian jacket purchased at antique clothing fair
My paternal grandmother’s alligator pumps (1940s)
My mother’s a-line black wool coat (1950s)
My maternal grandmother’s wool LBD/matching coat ensemble (1960s)

My sisters took all my high school and college clothes when we cleaned out our childhood home. Their daughters have worn my things for all occasions. Two of my nieces are really into vintage. The ones who aren’t still love the party and formal dresses.

I don’t wear it but…I have my Daddy’s WWII uniform in my closet.

I have a pair of ladies leather dress gloves made in the 1940’s from a deer that my grandfather shot. I also have the picture of him with the deer. I only wear them on special occasions. DH has hiking boots from the early 1980’s that he still uses. I have some clothes from high school but I can’t fit in them any more.

I have a Japanese happi coat that my dad bought in Japan right after the end of WWII.

I have a pair of Sorels that I bought in 1973, and they are terrific!

@emilybee: Depending on the size, I would have given you more than $150 for that Burberry coat.

I have a Lurex turtleneck that my mom wore in the early 70’s and a track style jacket from my college days. These can still be worn and will not look dated, but I mostly keep them for their sentimental value, not because I intend to wear them.

This vintage item that I have in my scarves “mini-collection” does get worn when the weather gets chillier:

Yummmmmm . . . Hermes silk scarf . . . . yummmmmmm. . . .

You know they’re $350 and up even on Ebay??

One day I will own a Hermes scarf and a Chanel bag and a Burberry trenchcoat.

"Depending on the size, I would have given you more than $150 for that Burberry coat.’

Small - my mom is only 5’ and I am 5’1" but the style when she bought it was very long and big-ish and I just felt very shleppy in it.

I heard the vintage burberry’s - especially the ones made for Harrods can fetch more than $150 but i didn’t want to bother with ebay, etc.

Now I’m really disappointed. I too am only 5’. It would have been perfect for me.

^MichiganGeorgia you definitely are one of the winners of cool story clothes!

“Now I’m really disappointed. I too am only 5’. It would have been perfect for me.”

Sorry.
I wouldn’t have even asked for any money.

Maybe we should have a thread for when people want to get rid of things - a CC craigslist?
