My essays come out to be 1060… im not worried. Being 15-20 over doesnt hurt, Its the fact that one may be excpetionaly long while the other is exceptionally short is a problem.

Also, the fact that your sister’s essays were 1000 words on the dot is not an indicator as to why she got in. Trust me. Being on the dot is not why people get in.

I sent in my admission essay that was about 950 words. I knew it was too long but my ED deadline was looming and I couldn’t cut off any more words. I just hope my essay length doesn’t work against me!

Its not like they have a line little line that says stop at the 1000th word. My college counselor reasurred me that being 15-20 words is really quite alright. She has done all these workshops and thingamabobs, so Im not going to question her. She clearly knows more than me on the subject. But from what she has told me, its perfectly fine.

same here, the one i sent essays i sent out to UCSD came out to be 1080 words.IMO as long as you can hold onto the interest of the AOs for that extra 80 words, you should be fine.
im pretty sure they actually cap the essays like this: 250 250 and 680
so they actually give you room for 1180 words even though they recommend its 1000 or less.

To the person that sent in the 950 word essay for the 500 word limit . . .

Ouch. If I was an admissions officer, I wouldn’t notice a 520 or maybe even a 560 word essay if I was reading a bunch of 500-word-essays. But 950? Think of the poor adcoms. If you had to read tons of 500-word-essays, most of which are probably not that great, would you really read a 950 word one? It may seem like not a big deal, but adcoms appreciate essays that are at least in range of the word limit.

To the original poster, I somehow doubt being 70 words under the limit is bad in the least. All they want is to limit the amount of time they have to spend reading essays, so it doesn’t disadvantage you outside of the fact that you might have said less than other applicants who were closer to the limit.

The UC rep I talked to said that it’d cut off any one if it’s over 650 words, but she didn’t say anything about other cut-offs, so I think < 50 over is probably fine.
