UC Berkeley often rejects OOS applicants with much higher hard stats; it’s extremely difficult school to get into. Not trying to be discouraging though.

Congratulations on getting into U of Pitt - <:-P It is an excellent University with a top notch reputation and lots of qualified students just like you were rejected from there. I do hope you have a chance to visit, it’s a fun college town, maybe join a groupme or fb page, or whatever they have set up for admitted students and start researching the academic programs as well a bit more so you can start picturing yourself there. I don’t think you can go wrong attending Pitt!
I think people misunderstand what a safety really is. It’s a school that: will most likely admit you; is affordable; and, the part everyone forgets, is a place you would love to attend.
Pitt Honors is a great choice and with a 32 you’re lucky you got in. There’ll be LOTS of very accomplished students there.
Now, is it affordable for you?
If not, as lindagaf said, around May 5th there’s a list with colleges that miscalculated yield. There are always great colleges on that list, so if Pitt Honors is where you deposit but you want to try, there’ll be 5-6 strong possibilities then. If you get into one you like better than Pitt Honors, all the better, and if you don’t, you haven’t lost anything.
Thank you all for your responses. To be fair, my parents immigrated here and didn’t go to college and I am the first in my family to go- so we were kinda clueless about this whole process. I showed my guidance counselor my list prefacing it that I felt it was a little crazy, but he told me he thought it was fine. I was shocked my this honestly, but I figured he knows more than I do. Also, I didn’t mean to make it sound like I chose Pittsburgh out of a hat! I choose to apply because I know they are great for my intended major and because I wanted to be in an urban setting, I just meant I didn’t know as much about it as I do about my other schools I applied to and didn’t get the chance to visit. I didn’t mean to sound ungrateful at all. They also gave me a really great financial aid package so the cost isn’t a concern. I just felt screwed because I’m getting this storm of rejections meanwhile people in my grade in the same exact classes as me, same ACT, similar GPA and ec’s, etc are getting in to all these top tier schools while I’m not so it just kinda stinks. Its frustrating to see people in your own grade getting in to all these ivies/top 20 schools who don’t have better stats than you and you’re not, and you don’t know why. My essay made one of my teachers cry and my Emory interviewer literately hugged me before I left and told me I have nothing to worry about, so it’s just like what am I not doing that these kids are! I’m sure tons of you can relate to this. Reading these replies did make me feel a lot better though.
Go visit Pitt. The neighborhood is awesome, the school is impressive. Classes at Carnegie Mellon is interesting - they are almost across the street from each other.
I’m sorry. You’re right, it stinks, and you don’t know why they got in and you didn’t. 
Do go back to your GC for a debrief though, it’ll be useful to future students.
It absolutely does stink. Nobody knows why Student X gets rejected and Student Y with practically the same stats get accepted. The only answer is that, since approximately 10 gazillion students with those same stats applied to that school, the school had to find some way of differentiating between those students. We’ll never know what it was. Some people say that the school orchestra needed an oboe player because their oboe player was graduating, so they accepted the one oboe player out of the pile. Other people say that it’s all in the essays. Other people say that they probably stick the applications up on the wall and throw darts.
Please remember: there is nothing wrong with you, you didn’t do anything wrong, and there was no magic thing that others did that you didn’t do. We have all seen this happen over and over again every year. You are absolutely not the only one (and almost certainly not the only one at your school – I bet there are other classmates you’re not hearing from who didn’t get the acceptances that some of your classmates are bragging about).
Finally, let me tell you about a young woman I know who has a BA and MA from Stanford. She recently got hired in an admin position, and her direct supervisor is another young woman, only about 4 years older than her, who went to San Jose State. What school you went to really doesn’t matter nearly as much as people think it does.
So true. I have seen Stanford CS majors getting rejected for jobs that were filled by better qualified students from San Jose State or an unknown state school. In the tech world no one cares where you graduate from. If you can demonstrate that you have the skills needed in the interview you are in otherwise you are out.
It’s not WHERE you go to school, it’s HOW you go to school. Be positive, embrace your new community, make an effort to get to know the amazing people around you, and treat everyone with kindness and respect. You will do well. And Pitt is a terrific school in a dynamic city.
tbh, I think you will get into better places, like tufts if you showed interest. perhaps your essays/EC’s are not too good, but I think your stats are good enough for Tufts, Emory, and USC. Northwestern rejected many students this year with 1550+ or 34+, as well as Hopkins.
Based on stats you gave me (and solely on that), I have a feeling you will get into other schools. Perhaps not ivies… but Tufts and probably get off the waitlist from emory. good luck!
my D graduates from Pitt in a month. She chose it over several top-20 schools, primarily for the package Pitt offered and its reputation for her major. She had a fantastic experience (academic and social) and is well poised for the next steps in her life. As of today, she is competitive with the top graduates from any Ivy. All in all, we have not spent one day regretting the decision … rather, we have been overjoyed by the opportunities afforded at Pitt.

Your life is over. You will be flipping burgers for a living guaranteed. No one has ever gone to a sub-Ivy league school and made it out alive. Sorry to tell you bud, it’s the truth.

For anyone who is interested - I got waitlisted at Berkeley! I am extremely surprised since I’m out of state, so actually super excited for my tiny sliver of hope!! I got an obvious rejection from the ivies. As for Tufts, I was unaware that they are need-aware. I don’t come from a wealthy neighborhood, and everyone who applied was rejected- even those with higher states than me. Weird stuff. Anyway, hopefully I woo some people at Emory and Berkeley to convince them to take me off their waitlist. If not, then Pitt class of 2021! I’m excited either way Congrats to everyone else who heard back and have a new home for the fall!
Also, I’m super excited for my future in burger-flipping. I have already started practicing and it’s going well.
For what it’s worth, my daughter’s guidance counselor loves Pitt. Evidently it gets a lot of NIH funding and has fabulous research opportunities.
