On Appealing a Rejection

No, but I have a friend who applied to the same faculty as you and got rejected too :(. Based on the people who applied from my school who got accepted, it seems like people with higher marks are getting rejected.

Tufts syndrome, perhaps.

@billcsho But still, it must be quite disappointing to see your safety school rejected you even when you’re qualified.
@ShipAlreadySank : Have you appealed yet? I heard that you need to submit an appeal within 14 days after your admission decision if I’m not mistaken

@as2398 Not yet. I reached out to my evaluator via email and I haven’t gotten a response yet. I called admissions to ask about something unrelated and the lady who helped me said my evaluator could give me more information about my application. Hopefully she’ll be able to point out any weaknesses in my application.

I’ll be quite disappointed if it’s true that they were rejecting more qualified applicants. I hope that was not the case. Are you Canadian? “higher marks”

Do you meet the following UBC entry requirements for applied science/ engineering:

“Senior-level Math (Pre-Calculus)
Senior-level Chemistry (two full years or AP Chemistry)
Senior-level Physics (two full years or AP Physics)
Academically strong applicants who are deficient in either Senior-level Chemistry or Senior-level Physics will be reviewed on a case by case basis”

UBC will also review your AP exam results and use them to calculate in your admissions average. Your admissions average will focus on your science and math courses for applied science.

Your gpa/ sats all seem to be within range. If the math sat was under 700, this could pose an issue. Also Calculus is preferred though the minimum entry is pre-calculus. UBC also is more holistic than other Canadian schools — they do seriously consider your essays and statements.

It is always possible that your application met all requirements etc, in which case UBC does have an appeal process. Unless you are seriously considering attending, it would not be worth the time.

My son’s non-Canadian school has many UBC applicants who are also Canadian citizens. In this group there is no negative bias towards overseas Canadians.

@ShipAlreadySank : From what I heard from my friend, I think its best to reach out to your evaluator and see if an appeal is possible. No, I’m not Canadian, I’m an international studying at an international school that offers the IB Diploma.

I also agree with what @WhereTwo says.

But it also depends on you though. I wish you the best of luck on whichever path you choose :).
