I just finished Isola (Allegra Goodman) and if you like Lauren Groff, you’ll probably enjoy this too. Based on the barest of actual historical records, it’s about a French woman left on an island (not a spoiler); it was better than I expected and certainly defeats a few of the plucky heroine stereotypes.
Reading and enjoying This is Not About Us by Allegra Goodman. Almost done.
Good to hear, it’s on my library queue and should be in soon.
Has anybody here read Let Them by Mel Robbins, the best seller? I am curious about what people think.
Eagerly waiting for reviews of Yesteryear.
I just got this in the mail. I have 4 to to get through before it, though.
I am about halfway through Arcadia. I think it was recommended here. Excellent, and would be a good book club choice.
I am listening to Let Them and have found some of the chapters to be of value. After an empty nest, we relocated to a small resort like town and her chapters on adult friendships really resonated with me and that alone was worth the cost of the book. I don’t listen to a lot of audio books and prefer to read, but this works really well and I listen in spurts - so not done even after a few months. Small bits works for me vs all the “Let Them” at once ![]()
Just completed the beautiful and heart wrenching book by Geraldine Brooks about the sudden death of her husband, writer Tony Horowitz - Memorial Days: A Memoir. Highly recommend if you are comfortable with the topic.
I just finished Arcadia by Lauren Groff. Great book! It would be a terrific book club selection, here or elsewhere.
So fun to read thru this thread for recommendations and feedback. I’ve written several down!
I’m late to the party but my book club just read Hamnet. I had resisted reading (death of a child) but so beautiful written, so evocative, so thoughtful about human nature.
I rush-read it before my book club and ended up crying off/on for hours! Still highly, highly recommend.
I haven’t seen the movie because the book wrecked me for weeks
I finished The God of the Woods yesterday. I enjoyed the book although it took me a while to get into it.
I can’t even contemplate the movie! Still recovering from the book.
I finished Meet The Newmans - a family drama of sorts taking place in the late 50’s-60’s of a TV family - perfect on stage but not so perfect in life and the coming of age, gender, sexuality during that time when those things were more taboo.
I really enjoyed it and enjoy reflections of that time period (like Mad Men was). I hear people rave about the audio version of this book though I read a print copy.
I just finished Yesteryear. Unfortunately, I can’t really discuss here, because it would be impossible to without serious spoilers, but I’ll just say that I don’t think it pulled off what it tried to and I was disappointed. Veered all over with internal contradictions, and the reveal diminished the point I think she was trying to make.
Hope that was sufficiently vague!
I got on the waitlist for this a couple of days ago something like #900 on 100 copies!
I was excited to see “All We Can Know” by Ian McEwan on the New Bookshelf at my library, but alas it was a clear DNF (did not finish) for me. Thought it was an interesting premise of an academic in 2119 after the seas have risen trying to find a famous poet’s lost masterpiece poem from 2014, but the tone was way too stuffy and dry for me. It has had some good press and gets mixed reviews from 5s to 1s on GoodReads with and average of 3.85 so you might like it but it was slow and dense and just not appealing for me. Disappointing.
This may or may not be a DNF. I love Ian McEwan (I’m a fan since well before “Atonement”!) as a rule so was excited to see it but I was kind of ambivalent about it. My library loan expired a few chapters in and I haven’t decided whether or not I feel like getting it back out.
