^^^ My book club also read The Buddha in the Attic. I loved it but the first-person-plural perspective really bothered some. They wanted a main character with an identifiable storyline and it just isn’t there.
One of our librarians is Japanese and her grandmother was a “picture bride.”
I’m finishing The Husband’s Secret tonight and then will start The Other Typist. I really enjoyed The Husband’s Secret but, once again, part of my enjoyment may be based on the narration of Caroline Lee. She narrated Kate Morton’s books and I find I really missed listening to her. She heightens the enjoyment of books and is one of the main reasons I chose the book. At first I found The Husband’s Secret a little too full of witty inner dialogue, but I got over that. I recommend it. I really enjoyed Me Before You. I thought it was a lovely love story.
Did any of you read The Goldfinch? It was very good, IMO. The writing is superb. The story very interesting. It was very wordy, I recognize that but she writes so well that I really didn’t mind. Very intense. I recommend it.
Oh yay, I am excited for you to read The Other Typist, cartera! I am still going through The Distant Hours but I got The Thirteenth Tale to read afterward per your suggestion.
My fiance updated my phone and all my notes got deleted and I lost my list of books to read. I had like 50 books on that list. Now I start the daunting task of trying to remember them all… I bet my new list will end up with 10 of those books and 100 new ones.
I am going to need to start assembling some good beach reads for my honeymoon pretty soon. I actually would have really enjoyed reading these Kate Morton books had I not already ripped through them all. I will be looking for relatively easy reads that are engaging enough to make me forget it’s so flipping hot at the beach.
Aha, that was one on my list of books that got deleted! Historical fiction is definitely my favorite, so I am glad you reminded me. I will have to go back through this thread and find the rest.
The Invention of Wings is on my list too - possibly next after The Other Typist. I’m enjoying The Other Typist - only 4 more chapters to go. Gretchen Mol is the narrator and did a great job. I also want to get started on Dennis Hopper’s biography - The Wild Ride of a Hollywood Rebel.
I have about twenty pages of Those Who Save Us by Jenna Blum left and I don’t want it to end! Did someone here recommend this book? If so, thank you. I have loved it, despite its difficult subject matter. It is so beautifully written, especially for a first novel.
Those Who Save Us is outstanding and I was lucky enough to hear Jenna Blum speak at an event in my library several years ago. If you like Those Who Save Us, you will undoubtedly also enjoy The Invisible Bridge by Julie Orringer. The Lost Wife is also quite good but not on the level of the other two.
By the way I absolutely loved Buddha in the Attic. I thought it was beautifully written and an outstanding concept.
The Invisible Bridge was liked in bookclub. The Invention of Wings is coming up.
So, looks Like I need to add Husband’s Secret or Other Typist. What would you recommend for bookclub? (Of course, some of our choices are limited by how many copies the library has.)
I also just read “The Husband’s Secret” and loved it. Will read more by this author.
A really cute book that I came across is: “Judging a Book by Its Lover” by Lauren Leto. Great for those of us who have read a lot. Also makes me want to read a lot of the books mentioned that I haven’t yet.
Based on recommendations from here I just finished The Boys in the Boat. It was really good. I then read Empty Mansions. I really enjoyed it, wondered if anyone else has? It is about Huguette Clark.
I got myself “Empty Mansions” at Christmas time. I did enjoy it. What an odd lady, though. She’s the one who was reclusive enough that she didn’t even visit some of her several palatial homes for 40-odd years, yet kept them fully staffed. An interesting look at great wealth - she was generous to charities and servants, also spent a ton of money on dolls and dollhouses.
Has anyone else on here read A Marriage in Haiti by Julia Alvarez? I recently read it, after discovering that the author (who also wrote In the Time of Butterflies and How the Garcia Girls Lost Their Accents) is a good friend of friend. I thought it was wonderful–it is a memoir and takes place in Haiti and the Dominican Republic. I’m also curious to know if anyone here has encountered The Treason of Mary Louvestre by Mai Hailey (wife of Alex Hailey). I’m reading it for a book group, and I am NOT impressed.
