In addition to Goodreads, we have a terrific independent bookstore and their website lists Staff Favorites, many of which you won’t find on “the best of” lists. Book Passage also hosts many new authors, has writing classes, etc.
scout59: I also look to The Lariat List to find books of interest. ("The main criteria for selecting books for the Lariat List is that they are “a pleasure to read.”)
And as others have mentioned the Goodreads Choice Awards can be a good source for titles across many genres. (Click on a category to see the books considered.)
Thanks for the Goodreads suggestions! I read a lot of mysteries, so I’m pretty confident about mystery authors and the sub-genres, but I’ve been trying to broaden my reading horizons. That’s what I like about the Lariat list - even if I don’t normally read historical fiction or science fiction, for example, I know that the stuff on that list is well-written… and entertaining. I would never have read “Crooked Letter Crooked Letter” or “The Dry Grass of August” or “To Be Sung Underwater” if it weren’t for Lariat.
Thank you to all who recommended Flavia - I just finished the first book and am looking forward to the others/
I will say that I was a bit worried in the beginning - I found the incidents with the pearls and the poison ivy to be pretty cruel, beyond a normal sibling rivalry kind of thing. But maybe that is because IRL I am the oldest sister. I thought the story was quite interesting and I liked Flavia otherwise.
Just don’t let your younger sibs read it for ideas. I was a youngest sister, and so is D2 (who is so much like her), so maybe that is one reason we liked it so much!
I enjoy Flavia. In my opinion the books get even better as the series progresses. My favorites have been #4I Am Half-Sick of Shadows and #6Speaking from Among the Bones.
I’m on about 88% on Life After Life on my kindle, trying to bust through it today on my last day before the wedding so I can start one of my new paperbacks on the plane on Tuesday and not have to cart my kindle with me just to finish the end of this book! Ahh, the race is on!
My fiance is staying in a hotel tonight so he won’t see me in the morning until the ceremony. My friend offered to come stay over and play video games with me to distract me and keep me company, which is REALLY probably what I should do or I’m not sure how well I’ll sleep, but if she comes I know I won’t finish this book… maybe if I continue to stress out about this I won’t think about the wedding. Though, now that we’ve done the rehearsal I am feeling pretty good about everything. MUST FINISH THIS BOOK! I want to start Flavia!
Just checking in from St. Lucia to recommend the Artemis Fowl series to those who like Flavia de Luce. I am about a quarter of the way through the first Flavia book and it is reminding me very much of my old favorite. It is about an 11 or so year old super genius and criminal mastermind. I might reread these when I get done with Flavia.
I liked A Hundred Summers and really liked Case Histories. I am going to run out of reading material before we get home and should have brought all five books I bought, apparently. I mistakenly assumed both that I’d never finish all 3 in a week and that if I did the St. Lucia airport or the resort would sell books. No such luck. Hopefully they play a good movie for the first leg of the trip and I have time on my layover to buy another book it Atlanta.
Just finished* 11/22/63 *. It was a great read, and not one of his gruesome horror novels which I dislike. I liked the alternate-history chapter near the end.
Now I’m starting * Upstairs at the White House: My Life with the First Ladies *by retired WH Chief Usher J. B. West. I love this kind of behind-the-scenes book, as long as the writing is decent, which it is so far.
I’m reading some books from the “Lariat” list - just finished “Tell the Wolves I’m Home” and loved it. Last night I started “A Land More Kind than Home” and it’s amazing. I can’t believe it’s the author’s first novel! If you’re ever looking for a well-written, evocative book about love, evil, and snake-handling…
I just read Wonder. It was a terrific book. Should be on book lists for all middle school kids. (It probably already is.) Now I’m reading Hotel on the Corner of Bitter and Sweet. It is very enjoyable so far.
Thanks scout - more books for my list. I intend to read more Flavia books but not sure I’ll read one after the other. May have to bump up “A Land More Kind than Home.”
Sharon Draper: Out of My Mind …middle school or 48 years old get ready to be moved by this little girl with severe CP and her time in the educational system and socially.
LasMa, I already find myself thinking about that book even though I have moved on to two others. Some books just stay with you and Wonder is going on my short list. Two others on my short list are Still Alice and My Lobotomy. I think I see a theme developing.
