One of the best books I've read in the last 6 months is .

Re-reading after many years Manchester’s “American Caesar”, his biography of MacArthur and amazed out how much I had forgotten of it (and what a human being MacArthur was, in the sense of the complexity of the man, his faults (and Manchester pulls no punches) and his brilliance and contradictions, of someone who as a military man could be considered conservative yet who also had a huge streak of liberalism (that came out in the occupation of Japan and his thoughts, for example, on the Huks in the Phillipines and their insurrection).

The other book I read recently was the last book in the Kate Daniels series by Ilona Andrews “Magic Binds” , it is like the 9th book in the series and it has only gotten better and better (I love the humor on the book, it is a kind of post apocalyptic world where magic is openly fighting with ‘tech’, so you have the modern struggling with the likes of vampires, shapeshifters and legendary characters like Roland).

Reading Nightingale by Kristin Hannah on my Kindle app. It is my book club book for November. I have a hard copy of Commonwealth sitting on my bedside table to start next.
Also trying to catch up on 3 back issues of Oprah magazine on my IPad.
I enjoy getting book ideas off the Best Book thread.

@VaBluebird The other thread has been going for nine years and is such a wonderful booklover’s resource. It has morphed through the years and is certainly not just about one of the best books someone has read. No one should hesitate to post there!

I think this thread should be merged with the other, simply because the other is pinned and this one will likely disappear shortly and the opinions and descriptions of books will be gone.

I don’t know what to read. Any great books out there? It seems almost everything I’ve read has been “eh” the last year. I i like fiction.

I wish they hadn’t been merged. The best books thread is more about what have I read that is really good. “What am I reading now” is a different topic. I probably read 10 books for every one that I think is worth recommending.

However, the OP who started the “What Am I Reading Now” thread was asking for book suggestions, which is the topic of this thread. Regardless, what’s done is done; I can’t unmerge. If someone wants to start a thread about what bad/worthless book I’m reading know, feel free.

Twas you. (I just looked.) Love the Farseer books - so great recommendation!

As for The Sugar Queen - Hard to describe. If you don’t like magical realism, then you won’t like Addison Allen’s books. For example, in The Sugar Queen, one character has books appear (literally) in her life as needed. It started when she was 12 and bored; a book with card tricks showed up near her. Thereafter books turn up - on her bedside table, on her sofa, wherever - and become her own personal library. (I wish.)

Anyway, I can read one of Addison Allen’s books in 1-2 days, so a quick read for me and one I thoroughly enjoy. The Sugar Queen starts in the month of Nov., so the timing seemed right for a reread.

Warning: Contains magical realism - not everyone’s cuppa.

Those who like data and/or books with “Girl” in the title might enjoy this article: http://fivethirtyeight.com/features/the-gone-girl-with-the-dragon-tattoo-on-the-train/

PacNWmom I have had good luck on the kindle unlimited by sorting by ratings. High ratings w lots of readers.

I’ve never managed to read the Farseer books because our library doesn’t have the first one. Some day I’ll order it from a different library or just buy it.

Should do a thread on what do you reread. I’d love to reread all of Lois McMasters Bujold’s books again.

I had to order Assassin’s Apprentice to get started. Was worth it. Most of Bujold’s books can be downloaded for free – I keep 'em on my Nook all the time and occasionally reread. They are sort of “comfort books” for me during rough patches.

Just started “Hillbilly Elegy” by JD Vance and can’t put it down.

As far as merging the threads, I think a casual look back will show that the thread long ago morphed to “what have you read lately that you’d recommend?” though even with that, it has often been “I read this, didn’t really work for me” also. Basically it’s an ongoing discussion of what people are reading, or thinking of reading. Thus, I think it dovetails with what the newer merged thread was asking for, perfectly.

I like the Majipoor series by Robert Silverberg. The are rereads - I actually bought several books, used of course.
LOTR was an annual reread until the movies came out.
Bujold - yes, I went through several books in the series this year, then you people turned me onto Louise Penny.
Thornton Wilder’s “Theophilus North” is another reread.

Well, I just finished A Little Life.

I am shattered.

It is that kind of book… but I would not have skipped it.

It’s the kind of book that is going to take a long time to process, and reach into parts of one’s own life. In many ways.

Just finished A Gentleman in Moscow - really enjoyed it! Am now reading Hillbilly Elegy and have A Secret Chord next in line…

I was not aware of another thread regarding books- so, is there a second one or is this now the only thread regarding books to read, books that have been read, and books people loved or hated? If there were two, now merged, can posts from that thread still be accessed for ideas… Thanks!

This is the only one now, I think. If you read from the beginning, you will get lots of ideas on what to read. We haven’t usually posted about what we hate (at least not umprompted) unless someone else says they like it.

The posts from the other, closed thread are now part of this thread, starting at #4058.
