One of the best books I've read in the last 6 months is .

The Bleak house movie is good.

The author is now the Governor of Maryland!

The Other Wes Moore looks like it could work. It’s shorter than Just Mercies. I hate that I have to take these things into consideration but I do.

Based on discussion here, I downloaded The Other Wes Moore audio book from the library. I seem to be settling in to fiction books (or kindle ebooks) and non-fiction audio books that I listen to when walking etc.

I could not put this book down in the wee hours until I finished it. Oh my goodness. By John Boyne who wrote The Boy in the Striped Pajamas. This one is calledAll The Broken Places. Surprise, mind blowing ending. I highly recommend it.

Thank you for the reminder!

I bought that book in July and forgot to read it right away and now you reminded me to find it and read it!!!

(I have way too many books on my kindle. :woman_facepalming:t3:)

I haven’t been able to put any of John Boyne’s books down. In addition to the two mentioned by @VaBluebird, I binged on The Heart’s Invisible Furies and The House of Special Purpose. All well worth reading.

I’m glad Obama’s list included The Vaster Wilds. I just finished it about a week ago and I do not think I will stop thinking about it for a long time. It’s really about the encounter of Europe with pre-colonial America and the main character, Lamentations (the NYT review of this book is actually badly written, she does have a name and we do know where she starts, Jamestown VA 1610), is a compelling Everywoman. It’s a feminist twist on the survival tale. The evocation of the landscape is fascinating and the travails of evading starvation are described compellingly. I kept trying to figure out where she actually was, and I think she ended up in southern Pennsylvania. The outcome is very ironic (will not say more b/c spoilers). The ending is controversial, but on reflection, I think, fitting. The point is that we need human connection to make our lives meaningful. The people we love make us go on.

I’m impressed I’ve even read one of these lol. Are they all pretty serious?

Serious? I’m sorry I don’t know. He often selects books that I wouldn’t necessarily choose…not because of the topic, but because I was unaware of its existence.

I plan on going through his list to see which ones sound interesting to me. Then I usually check out Goodreads. I’m pretty frugal so I tend to wait so I don’t spend too much. It helps if DH wants to read the book too. I love books so I get excited at the prospect of finding a gem that wasn’t on my radar.

I am a voracious library user! I give books as gifts but almost never buy one for myself unless I am sure I want to have it to keep. Otherwise the library is the bomb — try it out, love it or hate it, return it, no money involved. There are so many books I have read that I would never have thought to buy but I checked them out at the library and ended up loving them. The library is a great way to explore different topics and genres from your usual.

I love wandering around in a library, but I get my loans from the digital building. I can’t remember the last time I actually bought a book. I make a list of titles that appeal to me while wandering the physical building then download them later from the digital archive, kinda like how I use Amazon for other things.

I am also a big library user. I read over 170 books this year (H read over 100) so it would cost a bunch to buy them all ! I do buy some books though, usually ones with a long library queue ( I pass those along to my kids), but only at my local independent bookstore. I attend book club there, know the owner and want to support a small business.

I don’t read as much as y’all, but I read quite a bit. I hit 50 this year. I had to renew my card this year and asked them when I first got it. 5-1-2001! It was right after when younger S was born. It’s across the street from my office, so it’s super convenient. Our is tiny, but still has plenty for me.

I was aiming for 50 books again tand will get to at least 49. This year a handful of them were audiobooks, listened to while running and gardening (instead of the normal podcasts). The majority are from the library.

Getting a new Kindle (instead of ancient hand-me-down) has enabled me to borrow ebooks. That’s when I discovered I could have been doing that with just the ipad (and phone). But the Kindle is nice to have too.

When I learn of a good title (here or elsewhere) I go put it on m library list. Sometimes I will also put a hold on it, to get in line. When I need a new book, I look at the list and filter by those available now.
