I did not finish Normal People - just did not like the book at all.
Can’t wait to read JAMES.
I just finished A Man Called Ove. I’m late to the game, I know.

My reading has been seriously lagging all year…there just always seemed to be something other to do rather than pick up a book. In an attempt to jumpstart it, I asked for a kindle for xmas. I’m happy to report I’ve read three books in the last two weeks!
Dennis Lehane, Small Mercies - it was an easy read, and I enjoyed the setting (Boston during the school desegregation of the 1970’s), but overall it was just ok. I think it would make a good action movie, though.
Min Jin Lee Pachinko - LOVED it. It pulled me in immediately.
Daisy Alpert Florin My Last Innocent Year - I really enjoyed this one, too.
So yea…I think the kindle was just what I needed to fire up my reading again.
I just finished Women by Kristen Hannah. I loved it.
Congrats on the new Kindle! It took me a while to get myself set up to borrow library books. If you have not yet done so, I highly encourage it. I also “read” audio books from my library on my iphone, usually while running or gardening.
I often put books you all list here on hold for my Kindle and sometimes it takes a long time to get them. So I just finished Sandwich and I enjoyed it. There were places it went a little long or redundantly into the mother’s emotions and memories but it was a quick read, I laughed out loud, and it made me think about my own experiences.
I also enjoyed You are Here and Tell Me Everything Thanks for all the great suggestions!
Sandwich took a couple of months to become available, but I just finished it last week and enjoyed it, too, especially her musings on aging sex.
Oh, I finally finished the Bee Sting last week but forgot to update here. I really enjoyed it and at the same time feel like it could have been 50-100 pages shorter. I’m also still not sure whether or not the ending irritates me (but I don’t think I can talk about it here because spoilers? But not the same reason it seems to irritate others)
I enjoyed it, but was definitely annoyed by the ambiguity of the ending.
I finished Crying in H Mart last night. It’s a memoir. It was an easy and enjoyable read. Most of all, it made me crave Korean food - I’ll be picking up takeout for lunch today from our local place
I thought Crying in H Mart was a great read, but I found it sad.
I’ll be leading discussion for a Zoom book club next week. The title I picked was a the popular *Olive Kittridge *novel by Elizabeth Strout. Even though I had already read it a few years ago, there seemed to be a confusingly large number of characters in the various stories crisscrossing the paths of the Kittridges.
I mailed the following link to the other book club members, and I was relieved to learn others had same challenge. Two of them had also used Google to arrive upon the same helpful list.
(the 4 page list prints nicely on one sheet using 2-up print option, if you don’t mind a small font)
I actually didn’t think it was that ambiguous but it was the lead up to that that was a little too set up for my liking
I thought Crying in H Mart was whiney and self-indulgent.
Today I finished “Miss Morgan’s Book Brigade” and it was excellent. It’s historical fiction and it checked my box of learning something I never heard about before. Real events written into a novel. I recommend it.
I read that a couple of months ago - really learned a lot!
Agree. That’s a good one!
@VaBluebird That looks interesting. Just added it to my last. Thanks.
I sometimes get a little confused with what I see recommended where. I know a couple of places All the colors of the dark has got a lot of love. I just came off the library waitlist so about to start reading.
I purchased that book at the Morgan library gift shop, as I visited the museum after reading The Personal Librarian.
Just moving it up on my reading pile - thank you for the reminder.
I really liked this book. Lots of plot threads. One of my top reads from 2024.
I also liked The Personal Librarian.
Anyone read Theo of Golden? My PT’s book club read it. An uplifting story that’s very well-written. One of my favorites.
I just finished reading “The Underground Railroad” by Colson Whitehead. It was published in 2016 (Pulitzer Prize winner) but I shied away because a friend told me it was “weird”. I did not think so at all. It was a difficult read (subject matter) but very engaging.
