The Instrumentalist is a great read!
Me too!
She also wrote a novella that I like a lot called Signal Moon. And The Diamond Eye, which I didnāt like the first time I read it but did the second (and was historically fascinating).
I just finished The Storied Life of A.J. Fikry. I just loved it. I know that it has been around awhile, but I just got my hands on it. It was lovely.
The Heart of Winter by Jonathan Evison. Chapters about a couple in their late 80s / early 90s facing health and independence issues alternate with chapters tracing the ups and downs and challenges of their marriage and parenthood.
The Storied Life of A.J. Fikry was one of my favorite reads of 2024! A very sweet story and easy read.
CC Book Club discussed The Storied Life of A.J. Fikry in June 2014.
It was one of my favorites when we read it with the CC Bookclub. I really enjoyed reading each of the short stories that introduce the chapters. As I recall the discussion was particularly good for that one. (see @ignatius link)
One of my biggest regrets is that I didnāt join the Book Club sooner. Some of my very favorite books have been the ones that I read here.
Iām in the middle of āThe Collected Regrets of Cloverā and loving it! I typically would never recommend a book until I finish but this one is so lovely that I feel confident in sharing now.
I just finished Playworld by Adam Ross. Itās a beautifully written coming of age story set in NYC in the 70s and 80s. Family dysfunction, crazy/sick adults and coaches, all confront the protagonist, a child actor who is negotiating his first year as a prep school freshman. I probably wouldnāt have selected it on my own, but every year I go to a book festival and try to read a few of the picks on the reading list. Iām really interested in hearing what this author has to say.
Thanks @momofboiler1 and @Bromfield2! I added them both to my reading list.
Itās my regret too!
Just finished God of the woods - Liz Moore,
could not put it down, page turner! Canāt remember when I read one like this.
Good book to be able to binge read - yes, there are multiple points of view and yes there are many time changes- but the little bit of effort it took So worth it !
Whew !
Added to my library waitlist! #626 with 177 copies ![]()
I put it on hold too: #1,788 on 269 copies. Lots of people hearing about it, apparently.
I just put it on my queue. Iām # 1498. Longest queue I have experienced, it must be good. I just donāt know how I missed it.
#157 with 28 copies.
It looks like a great story!
I was something like that with Lessons in Chemistry! Took months to get off the waitlist
1085 on 287 copies
I got it from Book of the Month Club when it came out. Itās been on the TBR stack since then; I should probably move it closer to the top.
