One of the best books I've read in the last 6 months is .

I’ll have to look for that. I’d read anything Ann Patchett recommends.

I just listened to Nicolle Wallace’s All The Best People podcast with Stacey Abrams. Besides it being a great episode, I learned that Stacey is an author. Her new book sounds amazing, but when looking it up, it seems to be part of a series. I’m going to start with the first book, While Justice Sleeps. I know the universe wants me to read this book because I got the notice that it was waiting for me just as I was pulling into the library/community parking lot to meet up with a great group of women at an adorable, quirky restaurant across the street.

I’m really interested in the new (third) one, Coded Justice, that has a lot of AI discussion points. I’ve heard they can each stand on their own, but I’ve decided I’ll read them in order for the character development.

I just finished The Good Sister by Sally Hepworth. I loved it. Very good characterization, with a dramatic plot twist at the end. I couldn’t put it down and read it in two days.

I finished Theo of Golden by Allen Levi last night. What a beautiful book. This book will stay with me for a very long time.

Has anyone read “When Women Were Dragons” by Kelly Barnhill?

A friend recommended it to my daughter, and she recommended it to me, but the subject matter is hitting too close to home right now and while I like it, I’m struggling to want to continue reading. My D had to stop too because she felt too upset.

I’ve had to definitely stop reading it before bedtime, but am on the fence with continuing to plow through. I’m looking for an escape to what’s happening in real life and this is not it. At least not so far.

If anyone has read it, do you think it’s worth pushing through the discomfort?

I have seen it recommended but thought it was a fantasy - what makes the beginning upsetting? Is it a particularly vicious dystopia?

The theme is about the suppression of women’s rights and voices.

Thank you.

I keep seeing this on TikTok now lol..and only rave reviews. I’ll have to grab it!

Re “God Of The Woods”, I read it about 2 months ago and I find I don’t remember the ending very clearly at all. It just did not stick with me.

One that I picked up on a whim at the library recently and have been recommending to everyone is “Do I Know You? A Faceblind Reporter’s Journey Into the Science of Sight, Memory, and Imagination” by Sadie Dingfelder. It was fascinating, so informative, thought-provoking, hilarious, and a quick, easy read. I couldn’t put it down and I’ve been putting a lot of books down lately, but this one I would squeeze in extra minutes to read while I was probably supposed to be doing something else. https://www.sadied.com She is really super duper faceblind, but was oblivious to that fact until she started investigating it in her 30s/40s. She has a very positive outlook on life and unless you too mistake strange men in the grocery store for your husband or your aunt for your mom she will make you feel better about your recognition skills.

Currently reading Carl Hiassen’s latest. He is always funny and dependable.

In the interview with Ann Patchett, the author of Satisfaction Cafe said her favorite book was Random Family from 2003. It prompted me to read it --non-fiction – and it is rather extraordinary. The author follows several members of a poor, Puerto Rican family from the South Bronx for a decade. The storyline is simply their lives, on the street, in prison, homeless, birthdays, etc. It’s quite absorbing and provides a glimpse into a life I can only imagine.

I am halfway through Jennifer Egan’s historical fiction book, Manhattan Beach, about a young woman working in the Brooklyn Navy Yard during WWII and her family’s connection to a gangster. It’s excellent and so different from her other novels.

I have that book and read the first few pages when considering it as my Book Club pick. Will have to get back to it.

I finished Buckeye by Patrick Ryan today, this month’s Read With Jenna pick. I was completely shocked to get it so quickly from the library for my Kindle. JBH raved about it several times, so I had high expectations. I was completely indifferent to the story for the first 90% of the book, but was completely drawn in for the final 10%. I didn’t consider it to be so meaningful to generate the rave review from JBH, but I’m not sorry I read it.
