I am currently listening to it… had it on my Library list based on recommendations here. I am two hours into it (of 13 hours total length) and still somewhat confused. Stick with it, right?
I volunteer at my local library and Emily Henry is in the Romance section. Also in Romance in Barnes & Noble.
I just finished Heart the Lover by Lily King. It’s short and packs a punch. I’ve read a couple of her other novels, which I liked, but this was my favorite by a mile. Her writing is beautiful, but restrained–an exquisite, moving read.
I liked it so I say stick with it
I liked the writing style in Cold Mountain. Also Donna Tartt in The Secret History although the plot was a little weird.
Ann Cleeves, Jane Harper, Lou Berney, John Hart, Kate Atkinson (Life after Life), and Denise Mina. We Need to Talk about Kevin has sophisticated writing.
Yes, do! I enjoyed it. But yeah, it’s an ususual premise.
A pretty interesting and easy/accessible series is the Ruth Galloway series by Elly Griffiths. It’s British, which for me is a good thing. It follows Ruth, who is an archaeologist who is called in by the police to examine bones when they are discovered or dug up by developers. She figures out if they are ancient or recent and a mystery ensues.
I loved that series!
I love that series!! ![]()
I also love the Detective Kaur novels by the same author, less so the Frozen people series/characters/story/world.
I am enjoying it. Got it as a $1.99 Kindle deal.
I loved it!
I haven’t read the Frozen People ones. I have read the Harbinder Kaur ones and liked those. I usually end up liking the Max Mephisto ones too, but the Ruth Galloway ones are my faves.
In the Shadow of the Wind by Carlos Ruiz Zafon
Gentleman in Moscow by Amor Towles
The Ruth Galloway books were really good. I was hoping they’d make this into a tv series. I’ve only read one other book (Harbinder Kaur) - are there more? Need to go find them if there are more.
The ones in 1950s Brighton. The first one had a magician? I didn’t like it as much as the Ruth Galloway novels, or perhaps couldn’t get into the characters as much, so I gave up
Wondering if it might have been a “good book/wrong time” situation..
I too am still hoping they’ll make a TV series. Come on BBC ![]()
The Brighton Mysteries are the ones set in the 50s and feature magician Max Mephisto.
Harbinder Kaur is the police detective in another contemporary series by Elly Griffiths.
The Ruth Galloway novels are definitely my favorite, but I will read the others too.
Just got around to reading “A Piece of the World” by Christina Baker Kline. About Andrew Wyeth and the “Christina’s World” painting. It was very well done and a good read.
Just started reading (mostly looking at) “The Look” by Michelle Obama. I never thought I was a fashion gal, but it’s been a lot of fun to look at and think what I would have wanted to wear in her shoes (no pun intended).
They are a little weird, but for beautiful writing I would suggest Arkady Martine’s A Memory called Empire and A Desolation called Peace. They are sci fi, but really are about the colonial experience, the pull and tug of loving the culture of the conquerors, but also hating what they have done.
It’s older so your friend may have read it, but I loved Possession. Two present day scholars come together while studying Victorian poets. Lots of great fake Victorian poetry!
For the non-reader hairdresser I’d suggest Remarkably Bright Creatures or Lessons in Chemistry. Both are fast-paced fun and upbeat.
I read The Look and really enjoyed it. Her clothing choices are not at all what I would have selected, but I admire her for having her own voice and an excellent stylist.
