I am wondering whether āterrible security practicesā might be one part of this hack that has the tiniest bit of truth to it.
Hereās a brief article: Penn investigating mass emails sent from University accounts in apparent security breach - The Daily Pennsylvanian
An article posted yesterday in the Chronicle of Higher Education discusses newly revealed details about the recent data breach at the University of Pennsylvania (paywalled, sorry).
It turns out that it wasnāt just an email breachāyou may have seen the news on the crude emails that went out to 700k people affiliated with Penn a few days agoābut rather a download of the personal data of 1.2 million people affiliated in some way with Penn, including (according the the Chronicle daily email brief summarizing it) āthe estimated net worth, donation history, sexual orientation, race, religion, date of birth, addresses, and phone numbers of students, alumni, and donorsā.
So yeah, itās kind of a big dealāand yes, a lawsuit has already been filed.
(Though I have to say, as someone with a graduate degree from Penn, Iām really curious what Penn estimates my net worth to be. I wonder how much it would cost to buy my own personal information off the dark web these days?)
any knowledge whether ED applicants were hacked?
