Opportunity or microaggression

The US does have about 9 times the population of Canada and about 13 times the population of Australia.

Interesting. At work, I know a guy from Hong Kong and he did migrate to Australia, bought big house and etc… He then migrate to USA, he bought a tiny condo here and has been here ever since. So yes, it’s anecdote but I’m wondering why his family is not staying in Australia. Maybe the Kangaroos are to aggressive?

@ucbalumnus

But in absolute terms, there’s no denying that +5 million is a BIG number. What’s significantly distorting the net immigration numbers for all the “attractive” countries is caps on immigration.

@sorghum,
Interesting that Qatar is #2-- must be all the happy, singing, migrant construction workers building the venues for the World Cup.

You think if those Nepalese workers could get a work visa in the USA, that they would pick Qatar over USA?

From what Ive heard Dr Google, kangaroos * are very * aggressive.

That must be it!

Tiny condo doesn’t sound like much of an opportunity.

Property values in Australia vary wildly by region, just like they do in the States.

" The Nepalese foreign employment promotion board said 157 of its workers in Qatar had died between January and mid-November this year – 67 of sudden cardiac arrest and eight of heart attacks. Thirty-four deaths were recorded as workplace accidents.

Figures sourced separately by the Guardian from Nepalese authorities suggest the total during that period could be as high as 188. In 2013, the figure from January to mid-November was 168"

That is awful. I guess being number two isn’t such a great thing, after all.

Post 65, that’s the point. He gave up 5br house in Australia for a 2br condo, why? If there are more opportunities there for his kids. Australia is much closer to Hong Kong.

Maybe he was creeped out because Australia has the most venomous snakes in the world. 140 species of land snakes, and 32 species of sea snakes. Now that would creep me out. Not too many snakes over here.

Maybe the tiny condo reminded him of home in Hong Kong.

He said that’s all he could afford. In fact he is thinking of retiring somewhere cheaper than where he is.

Presently, Greece would seem to be the Land of Real Estate Opportunity. When greece defaults on its IMF loans at the end of this month, time to go shopping for a cheap Mediterranean vacation home.

“Well you could get a fantastic STEM education in China very cheap, if you bothered to learn Chinese.”

Well, and if you don’t mind developing lung disease, asthma, etc. because of the godawful pollution. I’m healthy with no lung issues and I can’t run in Shanghai or Beijing without gasping for air, it’s so awful (esp Beijing). I pity the people who are exposed to that for years on end.

The wealthy Chinese are moving towards safer food air and water. It’s projected that 47% of that country’s millionaires ( 2 million) are planning to leave in the next five years.

Well, that’s fabulous. Good for them. They represent a miniscule amount of the population over there.

I suppose US realtors are on top of Chinese demographics.

wonder who made the environment so toxic?

I work with people from all over the world. I hope it’s not microagressive to say “what is your heritage” because
darn it, I’m sincerely interested in learning! :)>-

“you look great–how much weight have you lost?” which I personally hear as “you used to be so fat and ugly.”

I’ve taken to calling people out and saying “why didn’t you just stop at ‘you look great’?” I usually get some stuttering in reply: “I thought it was a compliment.” “Why?” “Well, you look better now.” "Got it. I guess I should say thank you, but really, I don’t feel grateful that you told me that I used to look unattractive.>>>>>>>>

Do you really? And I agree.
