Back to Pacific U. We visited it a few months ago. It’s more than a 30 min drive from Portland, more like 45 min drive from central Beaverton and almost an hour to downtown Portland, but there is a MAX train from Hillsboro (15 min drive from Forest Grove) that takes you straight into downtown Portland (also takes about an hour).

Pretty campus, very small town atmosphere. Nothing much to do in the town - one main street with a few shops. The school’s main focus on pre-allied health professions, although they have all the standard liberal arts majors. Since they have so many students doing pre-allied health, classes in biology and chemistry are very full. Their actual numbers for students going on to med schools are not very high, but higher for allied health. Make sure to ask for actual numbers, not percentages. We walked by labs, and students were all busy working and interacting – looked very engaged.

A few years ago the school decided to actively recruit from Hawaii. Now about 25% of the students are from Hawaii, with a major all-campus Luau in the fall with all the families invited. Pacific even has registration offices in Hawaii, so that the students don’t have to take an extra trip.

The professors seems very dedicated to teaching, definitely a teaching school (minor focus on research). Spoke to a professor who used to teach at Whitman. He said that Whitman students are mostly from the same background - middle/upper class Seattle families. At Pacific, they have a much more diverse population, about half of the students come from rural places, first in the family to go to college, etc. So the academic levels of students starting vary significantly.

The regular dorms seemed run down, but they have new ones for upper classmen that are very nice (apartment suite style).

The students that we met said they like it there. The school definitely has its own feel. If you are looking for a smaller school in a little town, close to a big city, with a nurturing environment, it’s worth checking out.
