Orientation Question

I tried emailing the orientation office with this question but never got an answer. Freshmen are supposed to meet with an academic advisor to schedule their Fall classes during summer orientation. Does anyone know if you have to make an appointment with the advisor ahead of time or is it scheduled when you arrive at orientation in the summer?

Meeting with an adviser is part of orientation and it is arranged for you, so no worries.

Just make sure you do the online math placement test BEFORE you go to orientation.

If you scroll to the bottom of that page, you will see a link to a practice/sample exam.

Thanks! That is very helpful - I almost forgot about the Math Placement test.

I got an A in Calculus 2 so if I just don’t do the placement test…I assume that is ok…right?

Taking the placment test is a requirement for all students regardless for what level math you are in and what grade you got in those classes. Also make sure you take it before orientation.
If you got an A in Calc 2, the test should be a piece of cake for you.

Actually there are several exemptions for the math placement exam listed on the orientation website.

@Jengst in your case I assume you also took calc I and got a C or higher. You just have to bring a copy of your transcript (can be unofficial) the morning of orientation.

I looked at the practice exam and I can tell you it is definitely not intended for anyone who has already made it successfully through calculus.

Yeah I got a B in calculus 1. I will just bring my transcript. Thanks.

While da6onet is correct about exemptions existing for math placement exam, that ONLY applies to TRANSFER STUDENTS!

“All incoming first-year students are required to take the MPE, regardless of SAT or Advanced Placement scores that they have earned. All entering first-year students are encouraged to study accordingly to ensure the best possible placement; first-year College of Computer, Mathematical and Natural Sciences and Clark School of Engineering majors should pay particular attention to the MPE since the two colleges base math course registration solely on MPE scoring and not SAT.”

So, even if you get an A in Calc2 at your highschool, and earn a 5 on on the CalcBC exam, you still have to take the math placement exam if you are an incoming freshman. Further, you should do so BEFORE orientation. Here is the link (there is a practice exam at the bottom of the page) [University of Maryland - New Student Orientation](http://www.orientation.umd.edu/mathplacement.html)

I am a transfer student.
