OK, found it in my handy dandy Catholic catechism, sections 2115 and 2116, “Divination and Magic”. According to this, good Christians are supposed to place themselves confidently into the hands of Providence as to their concerns about the future and give up all unhealthy curiosity about it. All forms of divination are forbidden, esplly those invoking demons or conjuring the dead, and including astrology and palm reading and the like, using mediums, etc. as these foster a desire to have the power over time, events and history and ultimately power over human beings that belongs to God alone.

Perhaps the opposite point of view is Norman Vincent Peale’s power of positive thinking where you just fully believe that God will take care of you and everything happens for the best, even the “bad” stuff, and you stop worrying about everything. If you believe it’s all good, then it is all good, and you are a happier, healthier person for always being positive. May be just a trick of the brain brought to you via religion, but if it results in a happier, healthier you, what’s to lose?
