Out of state considerations/warnings

Just a note since, as someone pointed out earlier, this thread might be read by others considering USC. I have a family member attending as an OOSer, and she couldn’t be happier. She attended because after beomg waitlisted at her #1, she got in off the waitlist; but by that time she was already mentally committed to USC so that became her #1.

She loves it. She says the classes are challenging and she has to work hard to do well. Right now she is not planning to join a sorority, but part of her decision stems from the fact that she’s making friends all over the place and having a wonderful time there. Her biggest concern in the beginning was the “too Southern” attitude of the kids. She now says that once she got used to the accents (and the pearls? not sure what she means there), she says basically there’s no problem. She feels accepted and is very, very happy with the academics and the social aspects. Plus it ended up being cheaper than her own in-state tuition !

The pearls refers to the fact that many female students wear pearls with everything…very southern… very preppy…in fact many girls wear black (sun)dresses and pearls to the football games. Watch a Bama, Ole Miss or Tennessee game on tv and you’ll see the majority of girls dressed this way. In fact at Bama games you’ll see the girls in black dresses and pearls also wearing the Bear Bryant style houndstooth men’s hat as well…LOL!!!

Yeah well I wasn’t going to bring up the female “dress code” - haha but…

My daughter - well has her “own” style, sort of eclectic as is typical here in the NE. At lunch she wondered if girls lose their “sense of style” when they get to college - too funny. they were all wearing sweats and some kind of USC shirt. She wondered if USC t-shirts were a “uniform” - had to laugh.

After she visted the dorms - she commented on how they all had on mini-skirts on a Saturday! too funny.

Anyway - the application is in - now we wait. Depending on October’s SAT’s - may apply for Honor’s college.

don’t forget it was a football day.USC pride reigns high, and theres a movement afoot to make gamedays “wearing of the garnet and black” the school colors. You see alot of USC branded clothing all the time there as a matter of fact.
Every school/region has its style.S’s friend from Long Island (NY) now at USC has adapted the pearls with everything look.
S has added collared polos and boat type shoes along with khakis to his business casual wear he needs for departmental functions at USC,b/c its the way men dress there. He has not ,as yet, added the “croakies”(sunglass -eyewear- around your neck- holders),Polo branded dress shirts, or rainbow flip flops that are favored on campus.
Funny story…when we flew back from move in in Aug there was a gentleman (40 or so)flying along with us…a Columbia-DC fllight…he was wearing a pink polo collared shirt and madras, belted shorts. We commented that a NY’er would never fly in that outfit(maybe go to a golf course in it) but he felt perfectly comfortable in it.Its all regional.
Our relative in Minnesota wear things we never would, and they think dressing in black for dressy occassions is weird.

cathymee is correct about the USC apparel and game days. The really nice thing is that unlike the truly southern schools (Ole Miss, Bama etc) most female students wear what they want to wear and there is no real need to conform to a “look.” When my D was rushing one of the sororities that kept preffing her highly has a reputation for being the girls who dress up to go to class and ALWAYS wear pearls. My D said there is no way I am dressing up for an 8 AM class…she values her sleep too highly and the requisite time to get “coifed and buffed” to dress up could be better spent in bed.

D dresses up to go out but attends classes in shorts and tees. Rainbows are definitely the footwear of choice for casual wear but that’s also the case at UNC and even here in Dallas. She attends football games with her friends and not with the sorority because in her words…“I want to watch the game…”

She’s a HUGE college football fan. Last year she and her best friend were a source of amazement among the guys because of their in depth knowledge of the game and their fervor…

As to the college apparel, I said this last year as well but it IS difficult the first time seeing your baby girl wearing a shirt with the word ***** spelled out in four inch letters…LOL!!! (CC edited the word …drop the game from gamecocks)

Ahhhhh yes those shirts were up front and center in the book store!! She wouldn’t buy it!
Got the red USC sweatshirt instead!

I’m not going to lie…this may be the one place where the word ***** has a good meaning.

JustaMom
when S&I visited, I wouldnt let him buy that shirt, fearing what his HS administrators would have to say about it…
but when he enrolled and went back for Orientation,it was the first shirt he bought and he wears it proudly today!!!

yeah, i think south carolina is the only place where people can wear a shirt with that on it and have it be perfectly normal. i just saw some of the huge football players at my school wearing the shirts, which i thought was really funny.

My mom, age 80, will not call “Cocky” by that name! She thinks “it’s an awful name for a rooster!!” Anyway, my daughter, who had adjustments and a few disappointments at first, is now loving her experiences at USC. She knew, that being out of state and knowing so few people, that she would need to get involved. And so she did. Kickboxing, floor rep, fitness center, classes, football games and other things keep her very busy and quite happy. She already knows of two Penn State main campus kids that are transfering to USC in January! They came to visit her and that’s all it took…they were so impressed!
