LOL at Mini with tongue planted firmly in cheek (I hope that’s not illegal in Georgia too). And Poetsheart, the Attorney General in Georgia is apparently on a “mission from God,” like Belushi and Ackroyd, to reprimand the young man.

Looks like the state attorney general did file an appeal which causes Genarlow Wilson to remain behind bars for now. Their reason? Apparently they are afraid allowing this miscarriage of justice to be corrected will cause ‘open the floodgate’ for other cases. So I guess the attorney general is willing to sacrifice this kid?

Genarlow’s attorney is seeking bond for him which would allow him to be released until the appeal is decided, but for now he stays in prison.

Disgusting.

That law is all about homosexual sex…as if straignt couples don’t do it, but it was a way to send gays to jail

What other reason for the law would there be

Former Georgia A.G. Mike Bowers is somewhere smiling, knowing that his tradition of injustice is being perpetuated by successor Thurbert Baker. Remember Bowers’ most famous case when the cops entered a private home and arrested a gay couple? Bowers also fired a deputy A.G. for participating in a civil union ceremony. When is Georgia going to get out of the business of criminalizing personal and private behavior? And I am not talking about drug abuse.

http://www.my5th.org/

this website should help with laws in various states

If he had gotten the girl pregnant, the punishment would be basically a parking ticket

wonder if color has much to do with this, and pride of the men in charge

Oh this was completely ridiculous. Every four out of five boys would be in jail in Georgia if every time somebody broke that law they’d been put away. It was a combination of him being black and it being at a party so that other people were able to know about it. And think about it from the girl’s POV as well. How sh**** would you feel if you realized the fact that you initiated oral sex on someone got them sentence to ten years in prison? I’d feel tremendously guilty and traumatized if I were that girl. Not that she should – but people tend to take such things on themselves. Shame on the original judge/judges.

This is a pretty disappointing situation, actually I’ve known about it for some time and get angry about it a lot. What do we expect though? This is something that happens to the “others” who are not like people in power. I couldn’t help but notice page after page about the kids from Duke, and of course people responded here, but I don’t know. Not much.

Maybe it’s race, or maybe it’s class. Still, I find it hard to believe that once again it’s a young black man (the girl was white BTW) and that’s just a coincidence. As painful as it is to admit to ourselves, it really isn’t. It really, really isn’t. If she had been black, or he was white, he probably wouldn’t be in jail today. I saw footage of the state legislature or something, deciding whether to make this retroactively apply, and the debate was led by an older white male who seemed very focused on painting Wilson as a rapist despite all evidence to the contrary. Apparently sexual activity between a black male and a white female could never be consensual…

But that’s just my opinion. Actually I hope it’s wrong. That would be nice.

The Attorney General’s insistence on appealing this decision has NOTHING to do with homophobia (or the attempt to suppress homosexual activity) and EVERYTHING to do with the long and twisted history of race/sex in Georgia.

Article about Georgia’s Attorney General, Thurbert Baker:

The AG is a black man?! That’s even worse. There are just no words to describe the level of disgust I feel for this man.

Just because you are Black and in power, does not mean you have compassion or common sense

And this young man’s nightmare continues…

coronax2, thanks for the update. I was so upset when I first read this story, I actually signed a protest petition & sent emails to Georgia officials.

I simply cannot believe that poor guy is still behind bars.

“Perhaps he will at least get some monetary compensation by selling his story.”

That WOULD be nice, but I think GA has a Son of Sam Law. Not sure, though.

This is ridiculous.

I also think it’s important that GA recognize the country is watching this case. Sending emails to the the GA officials would even make a much stronger statement, katliamom, and I will do that too. I signed the online petition, and sent the link to all my family and friends. ldmom had posted the link to the online petition earlier in this thread, but upon checking, it’s been removed, so perhaps it’s against TOS. It’s easy to find though. Just do a search for Genarlow Wilson petition. I’m so very sad for Generlow and his family.

yes…against TOS to ask for signatures. But a simple google on the name Genarlow Wilson should reveal the website where a person inclined to sign a petition might find opportunity to do so.

I’m so disgusted with the powers that be in the State of Georgia. They should be embarrassed for knowlingly abusing the spirit of a law in order to punish in a way that was never intended. And for what? Why? I’d like to get to the bottom of this issue and shed some light on what motivates the judges, AG and prosecutors involved in this case.

The Supreme Court of Georgia has ordered the release of Genarlow Wilson!

I just saw it on CNN.com – yay is right.

Now let’s hope this boy and his family receive the support they need to move on, to try to catch up with lost time & opportinities. (Though sadly the college football possibility is probably dead.)

I myself cannot imagine – don’t want to imagine – the kind of bitterness and anger I’d feel if I were his mother.

I certainly hope a college will step forward and offer him a 4 year scholarship so he can get an education and put behind him this miscarriage of justice.

It is so sad to think that he was being educated by hardened criminals over the past 4 years. That was “Cruel and Unusual.”

People of sound and dispassionate reason should promote an candidate to oppose Georgia Attorney General Baker in the next election. This is not a Republican or Democrat matter. Baker just isn’t very good.
