UCLA seems really odd this year! Some students in my school were accepted with CR high500 or low 600!!! (of course some one that are more qualified or at the same degree as you do are accepted) It MAY seem un fair to you~ but do cherish what you’ve already got! WUSTL is super! Even with better academic resources! I bet you’ll dig out more there

A 31 ACT is not “overqualified”.

there will be no figuring it out this year…as said before dont think UCLA was prepared for the number of qualified students applying. Students from my school did not get accepted with SAT from 2200-2300 and ACT of 34-35 (including me). We all had many AP courses, many EC.,good essays…it just is the way it is

UCLA got 57,000 applications last year. This year they got 61,000. For several years running, they have been the most applied to university in the country. I don’t know why you would say that UCLA wasn’t prepared for the number of qualified students applying.

I think it was the applicants who weren’t prepared for the number of qualified students applying. You thought you were a shoo-in, and you got rejected. It sucks, but it’s so hard to get one of those precious spots at the most applied-to school in the country.

If I have noticed anything with UCLA in the past is they like to see people who have shown growth. I have seen people accepted based upon grade improvement or overcoming hardship etc. over people who appear based upon grades more qualified. High school GPA isn’t always a true reflection of somebody’s academic capabilities, and I am sure the admissions directors at UCLA know that.

Never thought I was a shoo in for UCLA…in fact UCLA it was never in my top 5 schools. Because of the economy many students applied to UC’s and Cal state system that might not have in the past. When it is all said and done my guess is that the average GPA and SAT/ACT scores for this years admitted class will be higher than in the past. My prediction is also that there will higher percent of accepted students that dont go to UCLA because the financial packages this year are horrible…

As I said in many of my other posts congrats to who got in but I still think this year is different than years in the past. Many qualified students will be going OOS because of better financial packages…including me

“My prediction is also that there will higher percent of accepted students that dont go to UCLA because the financial packages this year are horrible…”

Absolutely correct. I was horrified at the finaid package offered to my D. D will not be attending UCLA (formerly one of her favorites) unless the other finaid packages are even worse!

At least you guys are getting something right? My family is in the “Screwed” portion of the bracket. Thankfully, I’m out of school now but my brother and I were both at UCLA for a year and a quarter and we both get 0 aid. My family is a two working parent home in Silicon Valley (where stuff is not cheap) and so we don’t qualify for aid, but that doesn’t leave a whole lot to live with. We ended up fine, but would’ve been nice to get something (kicking my self still for not applying to the Alumni Association scholarship).

4 years a go when S1 started UCLA it was $24,000. Just looked at “package” (lol) for S2 and the cost is now $30,000??? A 25% increase in 4 years? That’s crazy! I’m just wondering if this is a scare tactic to get voters to extend the taxes that are about to expire or of they will eventually offer more finanaid to cover this outrageous increase. I know the state is in a bind and I expected an increase but 25%?

I sure hope S gets in somewhere a little more affordable. I’m guessing the other UC’s will be similar. The campus will be a true split, the wealthy and the poor. So long middle class.

Well, if you look at the increase over the past year (the large 33% jump), that’s basically where some of your additional cost is coming from. I matriculated Fall 2006 - tuition was basically 7500. It’s now 10k + some additional fees (although it’s been voted that all fees are actually categorized as they should be - as tuition). Please make sure your votes at the ballot box reflect how you feel about the hikes - education gets shafted in funding before most other services and if we don’t continue to invest in education we’ll be even more screwed.

mtnmomma: Hopefully your S2 got into a more affordable option like Cal Poly SLO?

Depends on what counts as middle class.
