Mine look just like the ones you linked @abasket but I got mine at TJ Maxx. My TJ Maxx has lots of great travel items so I always pick up stuff like that there. I use mine quite a bit. I like that it organizes the stuff in my bag.
Quite a few of the discount stores (Nordstrom’s Rack, TJMaxx, Marshall’s etc) sell assorted packing cubes. You have to dig around and have an idea of what you want. Sometimes it’s helpful to see the items and visualize what may be most helpful to your needs.
We have a bunch of first gen Eagle Creek ones - I use them every time we travel.
I just did a week in London with a small carry-on (underseat size) and a travel tote as my personal item. I did use a packing cube for some things, but the larger ones I had were of little use in this small bag. Does anyone have any specific recommendations for the best size packing cubes for a smaller suitcase…or will I just have to measure and figure it out myself (sigh
)?
I use the compression cubes and am absolutely sold on them! While I like the size f the Lewis N. Clark ones a little better than the Eagle Creek ones, the Eagle CReek seem to be a little more durable (I’v had thhe sipper pulltabs come off the Lewis N Clark ones and had to sew a rip in one). @momofsenior1 - did you get compression cubes or regular cubes?
I have regular cubes.
My biggest cube doesn’t fit in my underwear carry on but I don’t find I need more than two cubes for shorter trips.
I hadn’t heard of the compression cubes. I use Eagle Creek, purchased at the container store,
I love being organized. Not sure I’ll use them when we go to Italy and I want to use every itty bit of square inch in my bag. I might just roll without cubes. I’ll do a dry run each way and see which fits better as far as getting as much as I can. Maybe I’ll use one medium, one small.
@abasket , I like the different sizes. The little I put my underwear, bra. The medium I put tops, scarves, pajamas.
The large I put bottoms.
@abasket I use different sizes. I have the ones you linked from Ebags. I also have another set from EBags of their ultra light packing cubes. I like them both and feel you can’t go wrong with either style. My H doesn’t use them and prefers to use camping stuff sacks. I tend to start out my trips with the cubes divided by style of clothing or by location if I’m traveling in two different weather zones. As the trip goes on I move the contents around and sort clean clothes in one and dirty in another.
I used them on our trip to Iceland for 8 days and I needed to bring a lot of clothes due to need for layering. Worked great and I only needed to bring my carry on. I also only brought one pair of shoes and I wore them on flight. Quite unusual for me to do that on any trip, but dress everywhere in Iceland is very, very casual. I need a lot more space just for shoes on most trips.
I bought mine at Marshall’s.
Everyone in the family has a set of the 3 sizes from EBags that are in #14 above. We also all have a set (3 pack) of the long skinny ones (I am on my phone so I don’t have the link handy). We use those for shoes, chargers and cords, or underwear/socks. We mix and match when we are not all going together. I like the medium size the best but the large will hold a lot. We have made multiple 20-28 day trips with those cubes and carry on backpacks only. We have had them for years and they have traveled a lot. They have been stuffed full and washed with no signs of wear or tears.
I understand how packing cubes help people stay organized or pack more efficiently but how do packing cubes help more fit in your suitcase?
@collage1 - Compression cubes will allow you to fit more stuff but here’s a great explanation of regular packing cubes:
https://lifehacker.com/how-packing-cubes-can-change-your-life-1833717212
"Cubes facilitate tight packing-
If you’re already an efficient packer, you know that rolling your clothes will buy you a lot of space. But clothes only stay rolled if they are pressing up against something: either their neighboring rolls, or the wall of your suitcase.
That means the only way to keep those rolls tight is to keep them contained. If they don’t completely fill your suitcase, they’ll unravel and flop around. If they do fill your suitcase, then the minute you remove something, the whole scene is thrown into chaos.
Enter the packing cubes. You can roll your shirts as loosely or tightly as you like, then zip them into a cube where they will stay rolled. If you remove a shirt and they’re not packed so tightly anymore, it’s not a big deal—the rest are still snug in their cube. They won’t unroll much, and even if they do, they won’t sprawl all over everything else."
^^Thank you. I suppose that makes sense…since I already have packing cubes I’m not using, I won’t invest in the compression ones (although I do see the advantage of those) yet. We have a 4 day trip to NY in February. I’ll try using them again.
Maybe I’ll see the advantage more than I have with past efforts.
Yeah, it’s kind of like dividers or organizers for a suitcase instead of a drawer (if that makes sense).
The compression cubes actually allow you to fit a bit more in by compressing your items—not as much as a space bag but some.
@collage1, I did a test yesterday in my carryon when I returned home. The last time I took a carryon was when I went to Italy 5 years ago and rolled my clothes for the first time.(No cubes).
I started purchasing cubes with my regular sized suitcases. I take these on trips because I just want more space and not have to use a quart bag. I generally have more space than I need and I have loved the cubes for the organization. Plus, clothes will tend to wrinkle and shift when the luggage is held upright after packing.
So, on this trip I used 2 large cubes and they fit. I had a few other things but ended having to put quite a bit in my small backpack. Curling iron, makeup bag, quart bag, shirt.
When I got home I wanted to see if I could get all that stuff in by rolling and not using cubes…and it all fit with no cubes.
So, for me to fly with my carryon and get everything in there, I can’t use regular cubes.
I would like to buy a compression cube and try it out, though.
I’ve bought a few sets of packing cubes in the last few years. I’ve found that with carry on luggage, we use the medium and small sizes exclusively. When we are on multi destination trips, its nice to not have to unpack your whole bag every time.
I have a cube in my personal bag with a change of clothes. DH doesn’t like to rummage through luggage in the overhead compartments and I’m too short to reach them. lol
In a pinch, I’ve used 2 gallon zip lock bags. Last summer, we took our niece with us to Europe. When she showed up at our house the night before our departure, her bag was too big and too heavy. She had to repack using one of our carry-ons and zip lock bags as packing cubes.
The clothes won’t be heavily wrinkled after the packing cubes?
@makemesmart - If you roll and fold properly, no wrinkles.
