My husband and I got our PADI certifications the month before we were married, in 1986. We went diving on our honeymoon. We have dived a few times since then. We took a refresher course at one point that was very helpful. One one trip to the Bahamas, my husband’s college-aged sister and her friend accompanied us. A resort gave them a quick orientation session in a swimming pool, then they went on a dive with us. It made me a little nervous that they had such skimpy training!

Do be careful if you dive in places such as Mexico or Jamaica, that you are going with a reputable group. Reading reviews, as nj2011mom mentioned, is very important.

I learned the hard way that I need to dive only when the ocean is CALM! I get panicky when there are waves. That is NOT fun. One time I started breathing too fast, as a result of my panic, even when I was using the regulator. So I used up the air too fast, and the other couple on the dive got really annoyed, because we had to cut the dive short on my account.
