How is your son today?

My eyes were very, very painful to move when I was having a flare of Graves disease when it first began to attack my eyes. This autoimmune disease usually begins with the thyroid, but not always, and then can move onto attack the muscles that move the eyes eventually thickening them. Thus, eventually, leading to the classic bug eyed look of a Graves patient. If it keeps happening and if everything else looks normal you could have them consider Graves (the MRI might show thickening of the eye muscles - when they found it on me, they said, oh good, it’s not a tumor - a tumor!, I didn’t even know we were considering that. Yikes. Made the whole Grave’s thing more OK!).

I saw a physician about 20 years ago, with the symptoms you describe, eyes painful when I moved them. He said at the time that it was unlikely that the cause would be found, but I went through a battery of tests, like you’ve described for your son. They didn’t show any problem. After some time (sorry I don’t remember, but I’d guess a week or two), it went away. Hopefully, your son will have a similar experience. We’re all thinking of him and you.

He is just about back to normal today. No headaches and eye pain 99% gone. I am freaked out that he somehow got some sort of viral infection that affected the membrane surrounding his brain to the point that it was swollen. When he moved his head up and down the pressure would move around. Another weird thing was that the eye pain and the headache were completely separate.

I was also worried about a tumor and was glad to learn that there wasn’t one! :-)

Didn’t work today nor will he work tomorrow but plans to go in on Sunday unless there is a relapse. Luckily, this only lasted a little over 3 days.

Thank you all again for your input. You really helped me stay grounded.

I got about 7 hours of straight sleep last night and I am so thankful for that! LOL
