As far as zoos go, the Living Desert is one of the better ones. The animals featured there are not miserable - it is their home turf! You can do some really nice hiking in the Indian Canyons that can be as sternous as you make it. There is also plenty of hiking at the top of the mountain where the tram takes you. For shopping, I recommend the outlets that have some pretty chichi places, like Loro Piana and Gucci in addition to the regular outlet mall staples.
I would recommend trying to find a vacation rental, there are some really cute small ones in the area.
