GMU is not far from my house. Commute will not be a problem at all. I know their test scores were around the same as mine. One I know had a lower GPA, but they had participated in research at GMU and also attended my Governor’s School. I also have done both those things and know some of the research professors at GMU very well. My brother’s GPA was nearly the same as mine, but his SAT was in the 2200s range. As far as I know, I am not expecting much financial help from anyone. My mom wants to get a part-time job to put towards helping my tuition. I know my brother also wants to do what he can. But, there has been no plan set in stone to help me so I am assuming that I will receive nothing for now.

@Madison85 Interesting. I applied to Baylor because I heard of similar opportunities. I had no idea they had such at Howard, right here in my area. Thank you so much. I will start immediately. Good thing they use common app.
You could get a full ride at several HBCUs: Tuskeegee, Florida A & M, North Carolina Central U, Prairie View A &M, Alabama State, Howard.
Did you apply to Old Dominion?
I agree with Howard and the other HBCU’s. Get it done now!
The National Achievement program has been discontinued.
If you don’t get the funding needed after this year’s admissions cycle, could a Plan B be City Year, VISTA, or a full-time paid internship (in D.C.?) while you strategically apply for a fall 2017 college freshman class, with the goal of a full-ride?
I just have to comment. I have read so many posts here on CC where higher income students (and parents) rage against the unfairness of having to pay for college, or who have parents who will only pay $30K for college, or who are from families who make almost a million dollars and are stuck living in moldy 2 million dollar houses. What a breath of fresh air this OP is. He comes to CC and the first thing he says is how blessed he is to have money coming in. He does not knock his parents for their choices. He listens to the wise words of those who can help…and then he gets down to business finding a solution.
@Biotech36 - I am sorry that you find yourself in this situation but I commend you for your winning attitude. I am sure that your essays and LoRs will reflect the person we see here in this post. Good luck to you and I wish you the best!
Yes, the schools listed in #24 are listed in the automatic full tuition/ride list linked in #3. That list has links to each school’s scholarship page. Check deadlines and apply soon.
As noted, Howard is first come first served. It is possible that they have run out for this year, since the scholarships are no longer listed on their web site now (they were earlier this fall). You may want to ask directly if that is the case or if there is still some left.
http://competitivefulltuition.yolasite.com lists non automatic big scholarships that you can also try for, after you apply to your safeties from the automatic big scholarship schools.
If you live in northern Virginia Northern Virginia Community College has a guaranteed admit track to lots of four year colleges, provided you do well for two years there. Live at home and pay cheap tuition then get BA from schools like Mason, UVa, and many others! Good luck!
OP, I am wondering if – as a last resort – you might consider another strategy. Some friends we know found the best community college in our area; studied their first 2 years there and did extremely well; went on to our state school system as part of the honors program ( SUNY Bing). I am just wondering if your state has a similar system. The advantage for them was 1) they saved A TON of money and 2) their test scores were no longer as important as grades and 3) since they were already in the state system, their entry into the honors program was seamless.
They still get to have the residential college experience, but they will graduate with minimum debt.
You sound mature and considerate of your family. I wish you the best!
PS I was thinking of UVA as your state’s counterpart to the above story because our S liked it and applied there (didn’t end up going but it was on the list).
Ask the community college/s about any state “articulation agreement” to smooth transfer into a state university.
I don’t think the CC transfer route would work well for a student whose parents don’t qualify for much/any aid and won’t pay anything.
this student needs to MAX OUT on merit as an incoming frosh and try to get a HUGE award. He won’t have that option as a transfer. There won’t be any “savings” if when he transfers and has a $25k+ per year bill to pay and no one to pay it.
@LKnomad sorry for the late reply. I had problems with my computer and have just recently logged on. Thank you for the kind words. The way I think of it, it’s hard to see the good in society and to find solutions if you are angry with your own situation without acknowledging how much you really have to appreciate.
@mom2collegekids I have recently applied to some HBCUs and some in-state schools that I hope I will receive some generous grants from. I am going to spend the rest of my winter break applying for scholarships and things like that. I have not run the net cost calculator yet, but I’m hoping I can also do so this weekend. Honestly, I can not thank everyone here enough for the amazing advice and support. I will definitely follow your advice and hope for the best. You guys are honestly awesome. Thank everyone so much!
@BioTech36 please keep us posted!
