missypie, H’s family is like your neice. Makes me crazy! The only firm date we have EVER gotten in 18 years (besides a wedding 6 weeks after ours) was for H’s nephew’s Bar Mitzvah last fall. But they neglected to tell us the huge family party was going to be the day after the actual Bar Mitzvah… H and I left that morning to take my terminally ill mom to WDW one last time (she died two weeks later). Our kids were the only cousins not at the party. I’ve given up. Choose a date for your trip and stick to it, that’s my advice!

KLucky, There are dozens of schools between Pittsburgh and Philadelphia. What kind of college and majors are you looking for? Yes, I’m in Eastern PA, near Allentown, an hour north of Philadelphia and 1 1/2 hours from NYC. Between my three kids I’ve visited more then 2 dozen schools and some I’ve done twice. Heck, I think I’ve visited 12 with my Junior son!

CIA, in the meantime, chicken soup and the most comforting video you know of. Poor kid–wish we could do better than virtual parenting!

Congrats to all the test takers, especially those who are DONE.

D1’s school has a senior night planned by the juniors. Each senior is assigned to a junior or two. The juniors do a roast of the senior, and give them some sort of gag gift. D1 was wondering what to get for “her” senior. I asked for a description. “Well, so-and-so is really excited about going to Stanford, has wanted to go there forever…” So this was easy–get the senior a Berkeley sweatshirt. :D

I think our 11th graders were the some of the first to get the mandated vaccine weren’t they? I vaguely remember S getting chick pox a month before he was scheduled to get the shot.

S. got the chicken pox several months after he received the vaccine. School didn’t believe me and I had to bring a note in from Dr because they said it was impossible. He didn’t get really a bad case however. keylime- Chicken Pox during prom season- eek.

Well, D didn’t do quite as well on the subject tests as she had hoped, but at least they’re out of the way. Prom is tonight (!) and then she will commence studying for her upcoming SAT.

What day does school end for your kids? She will be done on June 17.

Oregonuanmom - Sorry D didn’t do as well as she hoped. S took two last year, Chem and USH and he did OK, but not as well as he wanted. Of course, there was little studying on his part for either test. So he is signed up to take 3 more in June. Hopefully, he does better, but even if he doesn’t he is done.

I am a little envious of all you folks who have kiddos going to prom. S goes to all boy school and didn’t have a date, and did not want to be fixed up so there was no prom for him this year.

S’s last full week of school is next week, followed by finals the following week. So he will be done on or before June 4th, depending on his final schedule. Then he has two weeks off before starting work at a summer camp for 4 weeks. He is scheduled to take the SAT 2’s that first Sat and ACT the following SAT. I will have him start the essay after he has about a week off. If we see some progress each week during the summer we will leave him to work alone on the essay, if he needs proding, well it won’t be good. H doesn’t have any tolerance considering he has little else to do over the summer (except a little summer reading for school). S knows better than to get H going.

Boys (H&S) are away this weekend, so while I was thinking of it, I sent them both a text msg saying, no stress (haha), but S has to ask two teachers to provide recs for college before summer vaca. Got a txt msg back from H that S is planning on asking his an old history teacher and his current AP Eng teacher for recs. Fingers crossed he does it without another reminder. I know asking for a rec is not easy, but he has to do it before 6/4 and everyone is on vacation.

9 more days! It’s been a long Jr year for me and I’m only the mom. Major research paper due Sunday nite at 11 PM. Well at least they made it Sunday nite. The draft was due on a Thursday evening and half the Jr. class was out on Thursday. Not my S, but don’t think he did that well on the draft either. Waiting to hear on 2 summer programs S applied to 1 week v. 1 month. Hoping for the 1 month, for many reasons. Then we can make plans for one college trip and maybe I can take a few days with the H that doesn’t revolve around what campuses are nearby. I went on a biz trip recently and had a couple of hours before my flight and what was I doing- taking a college tour! I want S to work a little as well and earn some $$ as he hasn’t been working much the past couple of weeks- study/study. S is going to prom with a freshman and so is his bf- I hope all the Jrs and Sr girls have dates. There are some mean girls in the class, but many nice girls, so not sure what is up with that. I wouldn’t have let my D go as a F, but girls’ older sister is in S’s class and they know him pretty well, so…

Prom tonight for my son. He was excited about the shiny shoes that came with the tux. Turns out all the guys at the pre-prom photo op had also chosen the shiny shoes as well. The girls looked lovely. The rain stopped just in time for outdoor pictures.

We still have almost a whole month of school left but definitely winding down. Yesterday was the senior presentation - done in Junior year in case someone messes up. Finals don’t start until the 15th of June but the AP classes have projects instead of finals, and son always does better on projects, so he’s happy about that.

Our household has Glee concert madness instead of prom madness.

We haven’t had any snacks on the thread in a long time, and I have some espresso-chocolate chewy bars from last night. I’ll leave them out here, if anyone wants to grab a couple. There are also still a few leftover cheese blintzes (from the Jewish holiday of Shavuot earlier this week) I can scrounge up if anyone wants something more substantial.

Hope everyone has a fun, safe, and uneventful prom! :)

Wow!! Chicken pox! I know it makes the rounds every few years as our area is pretty transient. S2 (jr.) had them at 20mo. Over 100 pox on his tiny face alone. S1 brought them home fm preschool (who was 3). Neither I nor H had ever had them! How weird is that?!? We were checked for antibodies as I was expecting S3. I was fine, H had no antibodies and was given the vaccine just days after it was released. It was too late & he had a horrible case!! It wasn’t funny then, but the pix of my then 3yo, 20mo, and big ol H with all those pox are priceless! S3 got the vaccine, although many kids his age were purposely exposed to older siblings to avoid the vaccine. His Dr has never mentioned a booster.

One month of school here too. We still have SAT2s, ACTs, & finals. Luckily only 4/7 classes will have finals (he’s exampt from the others). S2 seems to be doing okay. Once SATs and APs were over there was a real relief! :)

EDIT FOR SNACKS:
Hello? This is new to me! I’ll trade you a cheese blintz for some kanske (danish marzipan cookie).

S had prom tonight as well. As for junior and senior girls not getting dates, my son’s friends solved that problem by all going together in a big group. Prom pictures show 3 boys and 9 girls. S has a harem!

School here gets out June 8. SAT IIs are in 2 weeks, I don’t think S has cracked a book yet. He has just caught his breath from the APs. Luckily, no finals to speak of. All of his classes but one finished the hardcore stuff with the AP tests. Now he’s doing stuff like building boats in physics.
