Parents of the HS Class of 2011 - Original

I am waiting for S to get back from taking his 2 SAT subject tests. Regardless of how he feels he did, he is done, done, done with testing. Two more days of school and counting. Summer will be spent on vacation, looking at colleges, working on college essays (hah! I’ll believe it when I see it), LOTS of music, and a one week physics program that he is pretty excited about.

I have never had to nag him about school work, but his younger brother is another story. I am so excited to be done with that for a few months! This summer is the calm before the storm of the fall college application season …

The word around our house is “it’s amazing - I’m almost a senior!” A couple more finals and she’s done Weds. SAT2s this morning, not much fun (especially in a hot, airless room). ACT next Saturday, but that should be more pleasant, just by virtue of familiarity.

She gets to spend most of the summer rehearsing 3 different plays (oh, excuse me, make that 4), and going to shows when she’s not in them. Maybe a job. Late July she’ll start on the apps solidly, still wants to be done with as many as possible by early October.

Our class of '10 graduates tomorrow … then these kids come up to the plate!

It feels like we should be done but son has another week of classes before finals start. Our kids graduate on the 18th. Oh, yeah and the ACT next Saturday! My daughter that teaches won’t be done until the 24th and then we have to move her out of her apartment. I’m trying to see if I can get out of that one!

classes not done here until the 14th. Has some exams/papers in the next week or so. Regents are the week of the 14th through the 23rd…so she still has lots of work ahead of her. She will be away all summer at her summer job (sleep away camp). She will be working on her AP English reading list and her common app essay in her free time! I am sure the summer will speed by and fall and college apps will be here before we know it. Will be doing a college road trip last week of August.

APs, SATs and ACTs done here until Sept…

Now to wait for those scores…

Thankfully our student will be VERY busy this summer and not here to check scores–Better to be having fun than waiting for mail

Transcript will arrive in about 2 weeks…checked final grades online and the yr was successful.

D thinks she did much better overall on SAT this time, I guess we will see…but she didn’t finish the essay. She only got to one sentence in her closing paragraph. How much do you think that will affect her writing score?

ACT next week and we will be done with SAT and ACT!!!

S thought that the Math2 and Spanish went okay, but all the kids on the SAT2 threads are saying how hard they were…I told S not to get hopes up too high, but the anxiety is overwhelming…at least the school year is almost over.

S is done with Jr. year! Happy! S took 3 SATIIs then ran off on a trip. Done with testing and grades…now travel and a great summer program and a very busy summer.

In about 2 weeks we take off for a tour of some east coast LACs.

college4three, your son may be right about the Math 2 – my son thought he aced it – he finished early and had time to go back and review all his answers. Of course its not a bad idea to avoid getting hopes up too high.

I wish my son had gone back and reviewed his answers. Instead he told me he put his head down and took a little nap…grrrrr He is only nervous about the chemistry one. Says that there were quite a few topics they did not cover in school.

This may sound mean, but the only reason he took the subject tests is because he wants to apply to MIT. If he does well, then great. But if he does poorly then we can cross of MIT and save ourselves $56,000. (Bad mommy!)

Sshh! Your secret is safe with us.

I can really “hear” all the relief in your posts everyone  Nice to be at/near the end of testing and the school year!!

EmmyBet, 4 shows? Now THAT’S commitment to your art! LuckyGirl '13 has started acting this year but didn’t want to audition for any summer shows since they weren’t through school.

Yesterday we went to a grad party for some dear friends—one sister graduated from high school and the other from eighth grade, same private school. We’ve known the parents since LuckyBoy was six weeks old (I met the mom at a moms group  ) so we’ve seen the girls grow up. My friend told me she was a wreck all week, with the various awards days, class days, and graduations. She knows I’m a crier like her so she recommends next year that I do not forget the tissues!

Good gravy, I cried last weekend when I drove through a crowd of grads and parents from the local university-----------and I didn’t know a single one of them LOL

Yes, it’s ridiculous to say, but she has 4 shows going this summer: #1 is the most time-consuming, a HS summer theater program in which she has a good supporting role; #2 and #3 are a local “Shakespeare in the Park” and summer musical in which she has background roles and will do some crewing, when she’s off-duty from the bigger show; and #4 is her HS fall musical for which they do a week-long intensive rehearsal week in August.

This is her idea of heaven.

She spent the afternoon and evening at a grad party yesterday. Today she sings with the jazz ensemble at graduation. Tonight - what else? - the Tony awards!

Kajon - From the experiences of the students in our area this year, MIT admission was more of a crap shoot than most of the schools. Two years ago the top three in my S’s school (public) got in (all female). This year the only student we are aware of that got in was a female in a private school who does crew. That is out of 10 public and private schools in our area.

Darn, I was away this week and lost track of time. The Tonys are next week.

Envy is such an ugly quality, but I will give in and let myself feel a bit for the next 15min for those of you that are done with testing! S2 still has ACTs next week and finals. Several finals he is exempt from but he still has to take Chem lecture/lab (two classes at his school), pre-calc, and his CAD certification. His SAT’s were quite good. Although not good enough to be comfortable at his first choice. Competitive but not comfortable. A bit higher score on the ACT (which should favor his math/science strength hopefully!) may mean he’s D-O-N-E.

He took Math2 & Chem yesterday. He thought the Chem was pretty good. A few things they didn’t go over but said they weren’t hard to figure out. He thought it was easier than the AP exam. How did your kids compare it to the AP exam (since that would be the only even basis for comparison between kids 3000miles apart  ). He did think the math was tough, and he is strong in math. He is sure he didn’t get them all right, but with the curve feels very confident… his attitude on this one kind of bugged me but, oh well.

He is at test overload! With the AP chem exam & sat2, I think he’s about as ready as he’ll get for the final. Math is probably about the same. He is really studying for his CAD certification. It is something he really thinks will set him apart in the application process. Generally 5% pass.

D took a couple of SAT IIs yesterday - Bio and Math. She said Bio was difficult - she has had a teacher that “does not teach” this year and so felt less than prepared. I don’t know why she didn’t opt to do History instead. She said friends that took History said that it was hard. Oh well…barring a catastrophe, I believe she is done with all testing.

Senior graduation was yesterday evening. Unbelievably hot. The graduates walked in and settled down, the principal started her welcome speech and the skies opened up!! Poured like crazy. Most of us in the audience and the graduates had umbrellas - but the poor folks on the podium and the junior class marshalls - they were soaked!! I was surprised though at how informal the ceremony was - the graduates marched in with the band playing, the speeches and then the actual graduation awards. No scholarships were announced - the program included a booklet that listed them. This takes place in a football stadium - so folks were walking around, kids playing, parent moving around to get the best picture - in some ways, the informality, the casual atmosphere was great, but I don’t think all the graduates got the attention they should have.

No relief yet, in our corner. S1 took SAT subject tests yesterday…said Literature was long and tedious, but believes he did well on Math and US History. He has finals at school all this week… then first time ACT next weekend. Scores will dictate whether or not he will need to take SAT again in the fall…AND may help us to pare down his list of potential schools.

He gets a week off, before heading off to the first of several football camps and a week-long leadership seminar. I think he has two weeks without obligation, all summer; other than his team’s daily strength and conditioning sessions. I e-mailed the link for the common app to him yesterday with hugs and kisses …although, I believe his AP English class next year has already assigned this to-do for pre-work. It was definitely NOT this stressful/competitive when I was in the same place 30 years ago.

gamom- my son got a 700 on his W portion while only getting a 9 on the essay. I think the essay is only 30% of the total. You might want to go to the SAT prep area and ask that question. My S is taking ACT next week also.

S took Lit, World Hist, and math 2. Said hist was toughest which I expected because he did little to study for it. The only AP exam he could compare to the SAT2’s would be Lit, I will have to ask him how it compared.

Kajon, just looked at Naviance for MIT and yes for the most part the kids who were accepted (from S’school) had incredible stats, but many others with similiar stats or better were denied. Good luck to your son.

Emmybet- sounds like you D has a busy summer planned and is having a ball. I hope she has a great summer and I see her name in lights someday!

Thank you!

I’m glad to hear other kids thought US History was hard. She was disappointed to see so many questions she’d never heard of, after taking APUSH. Oh, well. She was surprised Lit didn’t feel easier. Again, OH, WELL. She did have the scores sent in advance to the one school she’s interested in who wants them (I’m with you, Kajon). Whatever! It’s out of our hands now.

My D used to do music all the time and feels she needs some performing credentials on her theater resume before auditioning for college programs. This is her big chance, so she’s maximizing. Also it’s a chance to learn what she likes/dislikes about doing theater, so she can know what programs suit her best. Next summer, when she’s (presumably) already accepted somewhere, she will focus more on working and earning the money she won’t make this summer.

She has a bunch of regular BA schools (that offer theater majors) on her list, too, so she will be in a theater program no matter what … I’d say unless she changes her mind, but while she’s been offstage until this year, she’s been living and breathing theater all her life.

I appreciate the good wishes! I’m very proud of her.
