Parents of the HS Class of 2011 - Original

Hello parents of class of 2011/2015, how are you all doing? I am part of your son/daughter class and just wanted to see what parents are doing since we are leaving in a year.

Happy happy dance!!! Last week I reported doing the mom happy dance because d (who is away all summer working at a camp) had started her college app essay. She now reports finishing it! While I know she still needs to edit I am doing the mom happy dance again !! She really surprised me!!

Trust me, most kids are not even thinking about college, so you should instead get her a car. :Plol

When my six-year old came home from camp today she asked if I’d had company. I told her no, sometimes I just like the house clean for us! At least the lower level is presentable; next week I’ll tackle upstairs.

My 17-year old is at TS3 for the third time! Once school starts, I know she’ll be very busy, so it’s nice to see her out with friends. She has been working on application essays and studying for Chem SAT II with very little coaxing.

I visited American University today! I absolutely loved it! Everything about it was amazing, to me. Great location, great students, nice facilities, amazing opportunities.

It’s a bit of a reach for me, but I’m going to visit a few more times to make sure they know how interested I am (I live pretty near by).

Although, on our tour, this woman and her daughter kept mocking and making fun of our tour guide. Our tour guide was nice, bubby and interesting. She was new and said “umm” a few times. No need for the mom and daughter to act like complete b words over it.

CIA, wonderful to hear about a successful visit. Since you live nearby, are you going to talk to professors and students? Lucky you to be able to take advantage of that.

D1 is on a plane heading back home from her Earthwatch experience. I need to remember to fill up the gas tank on the car she uses. With both D1 and D2 gone, we’ve had a tidy house for the last few days.

Slithey - I am REALLY looking forward to a tidy house. What we have now is some sort of “drop it on any available surface as you are walking through any given room concept”. (and that includes DH)

CIA - sounds like you had a great experience. What other schools are you going to tour?

Slithey, I will be. I’m going back on July 30 for a Preview Day where I will be able to speak with some faculty members. What types of questions should I ask?

I plan on visiting a few times because I know that American emphasizes demonstrated interest a lot. It’s listed as “very important” along with GPA and High School record.

CIA - glad you liked American. It doesn’t have a finance major or S would be applying there. I don’t think you need to go overboard on demonstrated interest. A tour, the preview day and perhaps an email to your admis. rep would be reasonable. Although I am not discouraging repeat visits, you want to make sure you are making the most of your time.

phbmom - that is how I tackle housecleaning lately. I clean what will be seen, which unfortunately means the bedrooms do not get the attention they need. '

holliesue - sounds like you have a great D there.

Welcome sstewart!

I offer up some homemade pizza, just cheese but it is good if I say so myself.

hahaha, I have always wondered, how did some of you parents come to discover CC? Was it by pure accident or were you a member when you were a student?

^ Boy it has been a while. I think I joined when we were looking at HS’s for S, so three years ago. Back then I ■■■■■■■ the prep school/high school area. I must have found CC while doing a search.

I was a student in the days when you had punch cards to program computers, pre-internet. ha!

hahaha "or were you a member when you were a student "

I’m from the keypunch card era, too. One card out of order and the whole program bombed. Usually had to wait a while to run again because of others in queue.

But…we actually had to use programming language to use a computer. At one time I knew Fortran, Basic and Cobol. And I have done nothing in my professional life in anyway related to computer programming. Just needed to know at least one of those languages to even use a computer.

Must really make me a dinosaur…

"or were you a member when you were a student "

are you serious? we didn’t even have a color TV in my parents house till I was in college…and, yes, punchcards were the norm…

It was a joke.Lol and thanks to all the parents that are actually discussing with me.

I found CC while doing a google search regarding a summer enrichment program my son applied to. How little did I know…

I probably found CC while doing an internet search. Even now, something I read on CC will cause me to want to know more, so I’ll do an internet search on the relevant words, and most times the first site to come up will be … CC!

The reason I did not become a computer science major (which would have suited me well) was because I thought it was ridiculous to spend days writing a program to put a list of words in order that I easily could do in a few minutes by hand.

I remember staying in the computer room all night trying to figure out mistakes in nested loops or put a deck of punch cards back in order. It didn’t get much better when I started working as an accountant and had to upgrade each PC one at a time with a foot high stack of floppies. No wizards, no networks, no Starbucks to keep us awake all night.

I guess that is our equivalent of walking to school 3 miles up hill both ways in the snow…the stories we hear from our parents. I wonder what our kids will tell their kids.

CIA - my niece graduated from American last year. Loved it. PM me if you want to get in touch with her.

Awww, the clean house… I should be inspired…but, nahh! It’s finally raining here. S2 & H just landed several time zones away. It’s feeling like a jamma day! S1 is working & S3 and I are contemplating a James Bond marathon. I love summer. :)

Speaking of messy houses, ShawSon is leaving to rescue a friend who seems to be having some kind of meltdown. The friend just stopped doing his work a month before the semester ended (at another college). ShawSon helped him negotiate an agreement to get grades for three of his courses if he got his work done (and one that would get expunged from his record). He completed one course but the other two are still hanging beyond the deadline. He’s got to complete them and take a year off from school, but the other two courses are not working. So, ShawSon is going to the kid’s summer house to spend the weekend but asked us if he could bring the kid back to our house for a week. He’s confident that he can get his friend to finish the two papers in a week (the kid is, unlike ShawSon, a blazingly fast worker). We said yes. So, we’re likely to have another kid next week.

ShawD is finishing up her first timed ACT practice test. She’ll be grumpy at the end. ShawSon and I talked this morning about fellowships beyond college. We’ll do some joint research later. ShawWife and I did our Saturday AM yoga (supposed to increas the number of white blood cells, I learned today). Now, ShawWife is off shopping for our 2nd of 3 dinner parties this weekend and trying to figure out when to fit in kayaking. I cleaned the kitchen this AM before dinner party prep takes place and will clean after dinner party prep and again after dinner party. At least the third party is at our friends’ house.

Found CC using Naviance. A college planning tool used by my daughter’s school.
