Last three summer interviews scheduled over the next week. And then I think we are done til after football, which starts the 23rd. H & I would like to have S visit Lehigh but I am pretty sure that will have to wait til Dec, if we go at all.

I really want to get this process moving a little faster. Hopefully, by summers end S will have a final list of schools and know which he is applying ED, EA, rolling, etc.

We got our first acceptance today, Univ of Alabama. It’s Ds #2 choice but not really a financial safety from my perspective, depends on the Sept ACT scores. We really need the OOS tuition waiver.

gamomof3, congrats!!! Since you’re first out the gate, I nominate you to start one of those “Class of 2011 acceptances” type threads that gets stickied to the top of the parents forum. :)

gamomof3 - congrats on the Bama acceptance and on being the first one! When did your child send in their app? My S2 sent his on July 19 and hasn’t heard back from them. He did get a phone call from the U of Minn honor’s program inviting him to an honor’s meeting next week - so that sounds promising. We are hoping to get early acceptances to these 2 and then work on 3 others early fall.

Darn, I thought that D would be the first - if she’d requested her transcript when she was supposed to…

Today I was adding events to the calendar and got a bit choked up adding “Senior Night” - the last home football game where they recognize every darned senior (and parents) in football, band, drill team and cheer.

Meet & greet today with area rep for a university that is in the safety zone. S2 Enjoyed it a great deal. It was nice to see him as he realized they wanted HIM, as opposed to getting the speech ‘We only accept .097% a decade’. It was very refreshing for a young person who has been feeling squashed.
It’s good to love thy safety! :)

gamomof3: Congrats! It must be great to have one in your pocket already. I have the parental nightmare sometimes of going 0 for 12, even though I should know better. That first big envelope (or email) must feeling like heaven.

Dang, and we are just going over who my D will be getting Letter of Rec from. I feel really far behind

@Kajon. She did her app July 2. Transcript was received July 13th. We haven’t received the “official” letter yet but based on what M2K says on the UA thread, you can tell from your MyBama account if you have been accepted.

Cheers to all the early birds that have sent applications!!!
Gamom- gotta love the parents on the Bama forum! What a source of information. Congratulations to your D!

Congrats on the acceptance, Gamom! Wow - just when I thought we were on top of things - now I feel way far behind. I’m assuming that Bama is on the early side of getting acceptances out. It will be so great to get that first acceptance!

We’re getting a Japanese exchange student tomorrow, at least for a few weeks, maybe the semester. D is thrilled! I’m hoping it will put her on good behavior - to be the “wonderful college applicant model senior”! Next week they start rehearsing the fall play (school doesn’t start until 9/1), so I think she’s realizing school is looming.

I’m looking forward to a couple of quick instate apps and acceptances … should only take a few weeks. Hopefully no surprises.

Congrats, holliesue! So to continue the triplets theme, we just need to hear that rodney is hosting a student, too. Hey, rodney, want to join the group?

Any advice from experienced hosters? I’ve been told already 1) not to let her take all of the hardest courses when she registers and 2) to take her to the grocery store and let her pick out the foods she likes, rather than relying on “Yes, I’ll eat that.”

Otherwise we’re hoping for a nice balance of typical daily life and some fun outings. A note of humor - she “friended” me on Facebook today, which I thought was great … until I saw that of course her whole page is in Japanese …

But we’ll meet her this afternoon, and I’ll let you know if there’s any news. An exchange student who was here last year apparently came back to go to a WI university, so who knows - we might be helping this girl with her US college search someday!

I love to hear about the exchange students! Way back when (mid 70’s) my family hosted an exchange student from Sweden. We are still in contact with her and her family comes to visit every few years. Not sure how it is now, but our exchange student was way, way, way ahead of us academically.

I wouldn’t be surprised at all if a Japanese student is way ahead! The caveat was more about how taking classes in your non-native language can be exhausting, and about making sure there are some easy ones and fun electives so that they don’t burn out.

emmy and hollie: sounds like a plan; now if we could only figure out how to get involved? I don’t think my daughter’s school is involved with an exchange program (although I know other schools around here that are?)…hmmmm

Enjoy your exchange students holliesue and EmmyBet! We had a student from Paris stay with us last fall; my D stayed there the spring before, along with a bunch of other kids in a program set up between the two schools. We loved her and it was a great experience for all of us. Hope your experiences are equally successful!

eta: Rodney, the exchange programs at D’s school are through the foreign language dept. Even if your school doesn’t have a program perhaps the dept receives information about programs you could participate in.
