Parents of the HS Class of 2011 - Original

I’ve been accused of pushing one particular school on my D! It’s true that I like this school very much, but apparently she thinks I’m pushing her into attending --when in my mind I’m only encouraging her to consider it. Sigh! I’m doing exactly what I said I would NOT do.

I’ve got my favorite colleges now, but I don’t think any of that matters until April when acceptances and finaid offers are in. I’m just trying to encourage son to get the common ap done before school starts and apply to the rolling admission schools ASAP.

It is VERY hard. As parents we watch them (and help) get information, tour, apply, look for merit and financial aid. We are human and bound to have our opinion of a top school. The balance is to share that information and leave it at that. Unless you student is making a decision based on factors you feel are unreasonable (boyfriend etc.) then we have to leave it at guidance.
Let your daughter know that you have provided guidance her entire life and it’s reasonable to expect you to want to share your feelings on something this important, but the ultimate decision will be up to her. Do a check on yourself and see if you think you are guiding a bit too much. Adjust as necessary.
I know I certainly have my favorite. It may not even be an issue once the acceptance letters come. My son was doing an about face for a week until he saw the rankings. We don’t put a huge stock in them but one school was clearly higher in his specific major. It’s a long way till April and the decision may be narrowed down by admissions. Buckle up!!! :)

Apollo6 - Take a look at Case Western. I have heard that they are very generous with merit aid.

When I worry that I’m interfering too much - which is OFTEN - I remind myself that I absolutely do not want to a major player in what happens with them. The last thing I want is for them not to take credit for their own successes or to blame me for their failures. I try very hard not to micromanage because I want too much for them to feel like what they did was their doing. Sometimes I even make them crazy when I refuse to tell them what I think, when they just want to be off the hook but should be making the hard decisions themselves. Then I know I’ve met my goal!

Hurray for CC! I let out a ton of my extra talking here, instead of running at the mouth at her! She knows I’m really into this, but she doesn’t know how much I’m really, really, really into this.

EB - it will be our little secret  Its a great place to obsess. I do wonder if S is looking at my posts. It is so easy to see everything I have ever written. I may need to change my name.

As to flying into or out of Worcester: My family used to live in the Worcester area. My husband travelled quite frequently for business, and our family took 3 - 4 flights a year. In five years of living there, I never flew out of Worcester because the airport frequently was fogged in and because it was less expensive to fly out of Boston, Providence or Hartford. In fact, I think I never even saw the Worcester airport!

Hi All

We did what I think are the last of the college tours this past week.
One school went to # 3 on the list, and one is around #7 or 8.
We have a list now–a real list–and have eliminated many schools and are down to maybe 11 from 40ish…
so its been great progress…

Our student is finally starting the common app…#1 choice uses the common app and a supplement…
and I am not sure if the supplements are available yet.

The #2 choice does not use the Common App–so our kiddo will be continuing to work on multiple essays etc for awhile…kiddo needs to check on what has to be done for the interview…

Have lots to do (including me!)

1 school requires the Fin aid app in the same time as the early app…

School starts soon and I have to get last minute things together —have already done the supply shopping and shoes, clothes etc…

Trying not to panic but D just finished her college list, is still working on her summer reading, and has not even looked at the Common App website.

fogfog - You and yours have come a long way. Must be a huge relief to all. Have a cookie/ice cream/cupcake to celebrate!!!

Husky, Turn off the panic, at least for now. I couldn’t get my older kids to finish one application before October and somehow they still managed to get what they needed to get done in time, accepted to colleges and even got great merit aid. My son’s been reading for three hours a day for the last month to get through his summer reading assignments so even though he’s promised me that he will finish at least the common app before school starts on September 7th, I’m telling myself to chill.

I am at the point as well and I posted earlier this week that he knows what he has to do but only he can do it.

He has actually started taking some SAT practice tests for Math-he said it might sound weird but he finds them fun!

I like hearing what kathiep said-it gets done. It might not get done the way I want it or on my time frame-but it will get done. My S is a responsible kid and has never missed getting anything done by the due date-I need to trust him to continue that record through this process.

Can someone help me find the common data set for St. Edward’s University in Austin? I’m on their website and not finding it. Could it be that they don’t participate in it? St. Edward’s isn’t even listed under Colleges here on CC, so maybe it’s too small or regional to have much CC interest. I did find the CDS for Southwestern University in Georgetown, another one on DS1’s list. Thanks!

By the way, school starts next Tuesday, S has read maybe 130 pages out of a 500-page summer reading book, hasn’t even cracked the second required summer book, knows his list of top 5-6 schools but hasn’t looked at any applications, essays, etc. etc. It will get done at some point. Our school district has a big college fair in October; last year on that day, he was sick and missed two days of school. He had not been sick enough to miss school in several years and it happened to be on college fair day! I went and picked up a sack full of brochures, filled out mailer cards, etc. I hope he can go this year, so he can ask questions of the representatives, etc.

There is a sticky thread at the top of the College Search & Selection for Common Data Sets. I don’t know how inclusive this list is. The information, in my experience, is not on their websites…or not easily located. I find it easiest to google the name of the school and the phrase ‘Common Data Set’. Make sure you are looking at the most recent data available.

cgpm59 - I couldn’t find it either. I have run into schools who don’t publish that data.

If you absolutely can not locate it, I would consider contacting the school. I was under the impression that this was required to make information available in a uniform way that was easy for students/parents to see the difference in the schools enrollment data, admissions scores, factors considered in admission, etc.

I have a niece who will be a senior at St. Ed’s and she works in one of the offices (Student Life maybe??) I’ll see if she can find out for me. If I do find a link somewhere, I’ll post it here.

I find that many schools seem to hide the data…

I have found it under

freshman profile
CDS
common data set
Office of the Provost

etc

you could try bing or google–and put the school’s name in and the CDS etc in the string–perhpas that will flush it out.

St. Edward’s common data set information is available on the web site collegedata.

This is my go-to site for quick stats - [College Navigator - Saint Edward’s University](<a href=“College Navigator - Search Results”>College Navigator - Saint Edward's University)
