Parents of the HS Class of 2011 - Original

@ collegeshopping and fogfog - Where do you see the misc information section on the Common App? Or are you talking about the additional information section? Most kids are using the additional info section to upload their resume.

I don’t see why not to use the activities list for the pilot and scuba diving information. There are 12 slots for that. This is my pet peeve - How many 17 yo have 12 principal extracurricular activities? That page looks half empty (or half full) on my S’s app.

I just developed a new pet peeve - Yale suppliment (or the lack of it).

^^
Yes, us too.
First they said the 1st…then the 3rd…still not there. =o(

How much grace will they give to applicants who are “late” ha ha ;o)

As far as the Common App and those ECs–just trying to list the info in that short field is quite a challenge. As far as mics goes and resumes etc…I have read alot about how college admissions people hate the resumes that tell them everything they just read in other fields…If we can get the stuff for kiddo succient enough–I don’t know that kiddo will include a resume as kiddo doesn’t want to be redundant.

Looking forward to the weekend --kiddo noted how “long” this week has felt…

^^
I have read about adcoms disliking the resume as well, but there is no way we can go around it. S has more than 5 honors (some are pretty significant) and even though he doesn’t have 12 ECs, he has lots of awards for the ones he has, and as you said, the description field on Common App for the ECs is not very long. And he has more AP and SAT II scores that can fit there as well. FWIW, his resume is formatted more like an activities chart and won’t have the word ‘resume’ on it.

As for the Yale application, I read somewhere that for the SCEA, they would prefer the application to be submitted by mid-October. Our school wants the app in the office 2 weeks before the deadline. There is not that much time left! I really hoped, S would work on the Yale supplement the Labor Day weekend, and still hope the supplement will be posted today.

The adcoms may not like resumes, but the space allotted for descriptions on the common app just isn’t enough. seems like only one sentence will fit.

I suppose many ECs speak for themselves
things ike French Club, cheerleader, NHS, Robotics etc…so after years of doing admissions-how much do they really need to read?
and if its a sport-and the kid is recruitable -the coaches are already involved.
The app does ask if there is a leadership position…
I suppose its the long term ECs like First Chair (state level youth orchestra) Girl Scouts, and some civics related things that take a bit more space.

Been out for a couple of weeks on vacation and it has taken a while to catch up. We were out of the country and while college apps were mentioned regularly, it definitely was on the back burner. And now, I come back to the feeling that we are way behind :(

D did do some work on the common app when we were away. She has most of the boiler plate stuff filled in and has started on all the supplemental questions. The essay is still in the works. School starts next week and she has a pretty heavy schedule - I would have loved to have seen a couple more drafts of the essay before then, but it is what it is.

She had a couple of tense days last week - a friend got into a class she badly wanted - so she was upset and sort of mad at me (I made her go on vacation!!). But the next day, her GC fixed the issue for her (read email, checked and rearranged her schedule - all on a Sunday morning too!!). She was on top of the world - has plans of baking the GC some brownies now :)

She has a couple of priority/personal apps that have come in the mail/email. One of them is a school she was planning to apply to - so she will do that one. But she is now thinking of the other one as well. Guess it couldn’t hurt.

Despite my repeated urging, D has done NOTHING - nothing at all - with the Common Application. So frustrating. She is definitely a procrastinator, and always manages to get done what needs to be done, but this seems too important to put on the back burner. And she’s planning on doing two EA applications, so that makes it extra puzzling. I liked the spending Labor Day laboring on applications comment someone made earlier. I’m getting close to grounding her until she at least gets an initial essay draft done…but don’t want to overreact. Suggestions welcomed.

No, the parents of the *true procrastinators *will be posting shortly after Christmas…

There was just a discussion about resumes/activity sheets/whatever that people here might want to look at http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/parents-forum/985861-michele-hernandezs-activities-list-opinions.html</a>. D1 has a resume she’s been taking to interviews, but I’m going to suggest that she make a more focussed activities sheet to highlight just the things that can’t be described fully on the Common App.

Very very near to the final list. If she had her druthers, it’s six schools, with two maybes yet to come. I’m insisting on 1-2 other apps that will be easy.

Attended an info session at Stanford last week with my son. A specific question came up about resumes. The admissions officer gritted her teeth and said - yes it is ok to send a resume if you wish, but please keep it to one page. Like in most places they are looking for quality not quantity, so I think you need to keep that in mind when you are compiling your resume. Put the stuff that your student thinks is important and passionate about ( or proud about in terms of honors), but resist the temptation to list every honors as it will probably dilute the key factors that matter.

^^ ha ha
I have heard her say that too
They do not want to see everything regurgutaited…AND I think there is a way to keep any teen to one page.
Our kiddo has Academic, ECs, Sport, etc etc…and its gotten tight.
We have shrunk the margins, played with type face.
In fact without changing font size–just changing font–we were able to get 2-3 more lines onto that one page.
This page needs a few additions to sport–however kiddo was using it for introductions to recruiting coaches and used it for an interview last week…
I am not sure how kiddo will use it after apps go out–unless for a scholarship there is a need…
After that–it will change alot as hs things drop off for college things…It is not the same as work experience for a 20-something job seeker

omg–do kids do that? I thought everything had to be in before Jan 1…I would be wigging out if kiddo waited until post-holidays. In fact I have told kiddo everything has to be done before Thanskgiving–I am pretty sure the GCs at school require it

D1 reported that in her latest interview they asked a couple of questions that she’d not heard before. One was “What do you do when someone tells you ‘no’?”, the other was “Why do you want to go to school on the East Coast?” She did a nice job on the eternal issue with GW: how to convince them that you’re applying because you like the school, not just because you want to be in DC. She and the spouse are now off to the Newseum, the lucky dogs.

^^ interesting questions.

Kiddo did an interview last Saturday–it was very conversational and the questions were about what we expected…kiddo hadn’t done any prep/rehersal–though I suggested to take a breath and pause to give a thoughtful answer rather than feel kiddo must have immediate responses…

ST
Is your kiddo married? Is this a grad school app?

“omg–do kids do that? I thought everything had to be in before Jan 1…I would be wigging out if kiddo waited until post-holidays. In fact I have told kiddo everything has to be done before Thanskgiving–I am pretty sure the GCs at school require it.”

They can “require it” but if it is not for a grade some kids, somewhere will drag their feet. My d’s GC said she was called at home the day after Christmas asking if was possible to get a transcript sent to said college by Jan 1.

One item D was absolutely not allowed to procrastinate on was putting in her requests for rec letters. Some of her teachers even addressed the issue themselves on the first or second day of class. “First come, first served” is the motto. And, “Don’t expect a rec letter with less than two weeks warning!”

HELP!

Quick background. Our D is in our school’s GT program and has been since forever. In HS and on her transcript, her classes read for example AP Calc AB GT. So if you were in “regular” AP Calc, it would just say AP Calc AB. Ok so…almost every class has a “GT” offering, (not all, but certainly every math and English) D is in AP English IV GT this year and her teacher is just a Debbie Downer. Bitter, mean-spirited, etc. Example, daughter spoke up in class (she always has) to give her opinion on a character they were reading about. Teacher says, “tell me why your opinion matters” (and not in the defend your position kind of way) Apparently, the kids have a knickname for her, that I care not to say here as to not identify her. It is not nice. Out of the 26 GT English Seniors (kids my child has been with since 8th grade) 8 have dropped this class since Monday and move to AP English IV. The weighted GPA for rigor is the same, it is just not taught the same as it is not GT based. Do adcoms even care and would they wonder why all of a sudden the GT is not there anymore? Or is it the AP that drives the rigor in their eyes? GC wants to know if she wants to move by end of day…that’s 2.5 hours. Part of her wants to bail, the other part of her wants to be in GT group. opinons?

fogfog, no, that’s MY spouse. D1 doesn’t have one yet. Though it is a little disconcerting to realize that the spouse and I met when I was only a couple of years older than D1 is now.

For those of you whose kids are applying to Yale (not mine), is this for SCEA?

^^ Ha ha
Ooops–I read that as HER spouse–
makes more sense its “dad” ;o)

Hi- so yeah
The Yale supplement is up now—
They changed one of the short essay prompts

ST
The supplement is for all apps–the SCEA is due (all parts) by Nov 1

Collegeshopping, I would recommend your D get out while she can. D had a similar situation with a terrible AP Chemistry teacher. The stress that was caused in that class ended up brewing over into her other classes. In hindsight, I would have done everything I could to get her out. Lesson learned. If the only disadvantage is to lose the “GT”, then I don’t even think the AdComs will notice, let alone penalize her.
