Ever since I was a kid vie gotten sick, physically ill…the night before the first day of school. When my kids started, this lovely tradition came back. I have always been able to muster through getting pictures taken and to the bus (when they were younger). Yesterday was no exception. It was so bad that when I finally woke at 9 I panicked to find everyone gone. DH called later to say they had tried to wake me but I was dead out. It was 6:15am. H did take pictures. He’s awful with a camera but I was glad he’d thought to do it. So I missed the first day sow S2s sr year, and S3s freshman year.
Mom of the year. I call it now!

I sent H and Son off on a college visit road trip, armed with a stack of Mapquest printouts (before we had a GPS). And yes, when they made a wrong turn, they called me - in my car - to ask how to find the hotel (in a distant city). My sage advice: Call the @!# hotel, not me!

blue - that sure goes to show how deeply the feelings run! With me I just get a sense of an earthquake beneath my feet sometimes, when I think about how old they’re getting and all that’s happened, as well as what’s to come. It’s truly stunning - enough to knock you over, literally!

Oh you poor thing. Hope you are feeling better.

As for me–I often have a bit of anxiety on Sunday evenings–because of school the next day–has been this way since I was a kid…and its now about womdering if everything is done/in place for the next day/week.

Does anyone else ever have those dreams of going to a college final exma and realizing you have never been to the class and have no clue…
or
are looking for a room on the college campus–and can’t find it/buildings are spread out etc…
Sheesh–middle age and those weird college dreams can come oout of no-where. Wonder what this says about our educational system…LOL

That was exactly my nightmare - I pulled out my schedule right before finals and saw that I had to take the final for a class I had forgotten I signed up for. I haven’t had that nightmare for years…I’ll probably have it tonight!

regarding the dreams of missing classes all semester long then having to take a final - yup. And it always seems so real. Even just thinking about the dream, which I know is a dream, turns my stomach.

Oh I have those dreams too. I am sure that folks who didn’t go to college have dreams with the same high anxiety theme just a different setting. As an adult I occasionally have the going in to court to try a case I haven’t prepared for dream instead. I am sure there are equivalents in other professions. Yuck.

I was in a few plays in high school, so I occasionally have “on stage and not knowing any lines” nightmare.

No one’s going to mention the dreams where you forgot to get dressed that morning?

LOL EmmyBet - can’t say I’ve ever had those dreams! But the ones of missing the final or showing up for the wrong final - I get those even now, 20 yrs later!!

Yesterday was the first day of school out here as well. D drove to school, taking a few other neighborhood kids with her. We did do the mandatory first day pictures, but it felt so different. H was home this week and was really glad he was there to do the pictures - can’t believe that next year, she will be elsewhere! Start of an emotional year indeed.

D reported that classes seem like they will be fun this year. She got the exact schedule she wanted and was so thrilled. We’ll wait to see how she likes this once the work starts to pile on.

One of the teachers told her that her recommendation letter is ready. She was giving the other teacher a resume today. No work on the essay, but she has decided that she will be in good shape if she finishes it by the end of Sept. Bit my tongue and didn’t say anything…

I always have the dream that I can’t remember my locker combination.
Luckily my kids never seem to sweat the first day. They liked the teachers they met yesterday, have lunch schedules with friends and S2 got the 7th block worked out quickly. They meet the second set of teachers today so fingers crossed.
S2 isn’t driving in until parking stickers are assigned and the parking lot thins out. They give assigned spots via lottery. We are over enrolled by several hundred students…I think we have 500 over what we should. The parking lot is a mess until spaces are assigned. I think srs are given priority.

I think those nightmares started for me junior year in HS, when I had a hall locker, a gym locker and an art locker. (Now most kids at our HS don’t have a locker at all.)

My kids give up their lockers. There aren’t enough so hid gives them to someone who will use it. They found they never had time to go anyway. Once past middle school, they are allowed to carry backpacks all day. The drawback is carrying their laptops get heavy, but they wouldn’t want to leave those in a locker anyway.
We never liked them carrying their laptops until jr year, which is past the point of using a PE locker. They just left them in the back room with their IT prof on those days. She’s great. The kids go in early because they have their own coffee maker in her room. Last year a waffle iron. This year I know she has a smoothie machine for the kids after school. They usually have projects they are working on and are in there early/late anyway.

^^ If anyone has little ones in grammar school

^ those are weird ones too…
Even worse if you have forgotten to dress and are lost on campus on your way to a final exam for a class you forgot about all sememster! Haha

BlueI–Fingers crossed for your student’s schedule…

Some of you have probably read this on another thread, but our HS has a great fund raiser…seniors can pay $50 for a reserved parking spot (in addition to the price of the school parking sticker) and the money goes to student council. They are allowed to paint their spaces…it’s so fun to see all the spaces early in the year (before there are too many tire marks on them.) Lots of Hello Kitty and Pokemon, lots of college and sports logos.

That is so true!!! I’ve shared this story before but I’ll never forget what it taught me. We were at a HS meet the teacher night, waiting to talk to one of Son’s teachers. The teacher was talking quietly to the parents of one of the girls in class…the teacher was worried about her, she didn’t seem to be enjoying the class, etc. Then she got to us and just gushed about Son, how she loved him, how engaged he was. Son’s average in the class was about an 85 and Son told us that the girl that the teacher was worried about had an average of 100+.

Uh-oh. :o

i think is a great idea and fundraiser…I am pretty sure our HS and district would say no…

First day of school for D…she had senior camp out on Monday night and did not get much sleep. Had to do orientation for transfer students on Tuesday so today she starts herself. Initially was excited about schedule but GC told her they may have to switch her to 1st Block AP Lit…she is not so happy now. She did have open A block but not sure now.

Took 1st day of school pic today. Bittersweet moment. Can’t believe this is her first day of last year:( It will be a busy yr with several AP’s and all the app’s to complete for colleges. I am going to try and not bug her about completing the app’s but it will be hard…she said she was almost finished with the common app but not sure… I know she has at least started some of the essays…whew…I’m sure this will be an interesting year for all of us…Good luck to us all!!

Oops, the great fundraiser would be selling a parking spot…feels like a monday:(

missypie, That’s a cute idea! We already pay $50 for reserved parking and anyone that has a license can get one. In our state that’s usually seniors and some juniors. They assign the spots on a first come, first served basis until they run out.
