D has decided to stick with AP Calculus. She knows she needs it to be competitive for the top colleges she’s applying to, and she also knows that taking it in high school will be a good foundation for when she has to take it in college. She agreed it’s more important than Valedictorian.

OM, I bet it feels good to have that decision made. Its hard to see our kids struggle with this stuff but they seem to find more wisdom and grace than I remember having at that age.

OMom- good luck to your D. Make sure she gets help as soon as she needs it. One topic builds on the next and it is easy to quickly find yourself hopelessly behind.

Back to school night for parents last night. S is taking 3 AP’s (Calc BC, Physics B and Eccon) with some of the best teachers in his school. How he ever lucked out getting these three teachers we will never know, but they are incredible. He is also taking Philosophy with he absolute favorite teacher. He had the calc, eccon and philosophy teachers for other classes and likes them all. His schedule rounds out with English and Religion. WW2 class next semester. His religion teacher is exactly what these 12th grade boys need right now. It sounds like it is more a part religion, part current events and part therapy class. Although his English teacher is not well thought of, the class seems like it will be OK. The English teacher says he knows the sr’s have a lot on their plate and he is trying to make sure this first semester is not stressfull and is giving them plenty of opportunities to get a good grade with little extra effort. The boys get extra credit if they see him with their college essay and they get extra points each week if they write a letter to someone outside their immediate family. S was not planning on having this guy review his essay reasoning he will have his last years Eng AP teacher (who is this years philosophy teacher) review it, but we insisted he get the extra points. It won’t hurt and he doesn’t have to use the teacher’s suggestions. Calc teacher mentioned she will not assign anything demanding the last week of Oct, knowing a lot of boys are frantically trying to finish apps.

Talked to head of guidance and he said S is way ahead of most of the other boys. He suggested that since S already has his list of schools that he give his GC and teachers the needed forms, list and envelopes so they can start on the recs.

MaDad and I left the school both thinking how lucky S is in regards to school this year. All his teachers want him to succeed and will be doing all they can to make this a year to remember. The physics and calc classes will be demanding, but both teachers said the boys just have to keep prodding foward, take it one day at a time and they will get there.

mamom, Your son’s teachers sound like they really have the kids best interest at heart. Having the good teachers makes for a much better school year!

Good for your daughter OM! My boy is taking general Calculus and so far, so good, but I do worry as he has an uneven history in math.

Has anyone else noticed that there are less colleges offering Early Action? I had a friend from this board whose son was a senior last year and he finished his apps in record time and knew most of his acceptances before Christmas. Maybe it’s just my son’s choices but it seems that most of them are rolling (public’s) or only offer RD and ED. We are NOT doing ED.

I just finished the spread sheet and realize that son has too many colleges! We’re planning a sit down over the weekend to narrow the list, but right now he has 18 colleges. There are things to like about all of them, and it’s harder to toss out the ones that offered a free application for visiting and then they make it a streamline one to boot! Now that I write that down, it seems silly to keep a college on a list just for it’s application ease. Oh well, I am just the information gatherer. I’ll let son figure out where he wants to apply.

mamom - It’s awesome. From my S’s experience, I know how much it depends on the teachers. It sounds like your son will have a wonderful year. And our kids really don’t need any additional stress this year.

My D got her first two apps out the door - yahoo!

The 2015 Acceptance sticky was created! Lucky parents, start the ball rolling.

Wow, on your way Archie12! Good luck, hope your D hears back soon.

The 2015 acceptance thread makes me very nervous!! We are far from that in our house right now!!

D is supposed to work on one of the priority apps this weekend. She went to the football game in cold rainy weather yesterday and woke up this morning feeling miserable. Stuffed up, head hurts… Why is it so difficult for them to listen? I tried gently telling her that it was a bad idea to go to the football game last night (she had a long day the previous day and was already tired). Oh well, hopefully, she will learn from this.

Looked at the priority app last night (they sent a paper app as well). No essay required - that’s what it proclaims on the cover. Read the app and on the last page, they ask for a personal statement (250-500 words). How is that different from an essay??? Can’t see this one being submitted this weekend since the essay is not quite ready yet :(

I agree arisamp - 250-500 words seems to be the same as an essay. My D received at least 1 priority app that requested a graded paper OR personal statement- I don’t recall which school. She saved an “A+” paper from Jr. Year just for this kind of App. We’re assuming it is OK to send a Jr. paper.

D is applying to State Flagship which has priority deadline of Nov 1. App is basically done, transcript request form is ready to go, but test scores from most recent ACT not coming out until end of month. Doesn’t want to submit earlier ACT/SAT results until gets the latest scores to determine which are highest. Is it better for her to send App & transcripts now and test scores later? Or just wait until Test scores are released to submit App & Transcript?

Will my S be hurt since he has no AP classes? I think I have mentioned this before but to refresh his school does not offer them-well they offer Spanish 5 as AP (well I can’t seem to get a straight answer) and he can take the AP test for Calculus but it is not offered as an AP class. The school offers Early Entrance Program (EEP) classes in lieu of AP-they are all college level classes that are the exact same classes as the ones taught at RI College (a couple are also offered through URI) using the exact same book used at the college with college approved instructors (they must meet certain requirements to be able to teach these classes)-and yet some of the schools S is looking at don’t even seem to be interested in even learning about them-they are considered on the same level by them as an honors level class even though they are at a higher level than the honors classes offered by the HS. I don’t even know if I should bother paying in advance for the credits-at $50/credit it is an incredible bargain-but if he is not going to stay in state it is money down the drain.

I also have learned that you can take any AP test you want-you don’t even have to take an AP class-is this true?

I fear that if it doesn’t go on the transcript as AP Spanish 5 and AP Calculus why not just take them as EEP? He won’t be able to take the AP test until May-is that correct? Forgive my lack of knowledge-I just haven’t been exposed to this.

Pepper, My understanding is colleges like to see your S/D take the most rigorous courseload offered at HS. I think many smaller schools offer limited or no AP classes. You can only take what is offered. If your S takes EEP classes does he get credit from RI College? I know Villanova said at their info session they would only offer credit for courses taken on a college campus. College level courses offered at HS would not be considered for credit, unless you took the AP exam and got a 4 or 5. Nova seemed very rigid an I suspect other colleges my look at those EEP classes differently.

In answer to your question, anyone can take any AP exam. Not sure if your S would have to travel to another school to take it or how it is administered though.

Colleges consider what APs are available at your school. Anyone can take any AP exam. Many kids take AP exams and self study for them. And many schools don’t have “official” AP classes though after finishing the class most kids take the related AP.

Pepper - All AP exams are in May. Your S should take the most demanding classes his school has to offer. If the school has no APs, your student won’t be penalized for that. Ask your GC what colleges kids with your son’s stats get admitted to. That will tell you a lot about his chances.

I guess no one wants to be the first to post on the acceptance thread.

Our daughter is applying ED by Nov 1 with response by Dec 15, while delighted with her choice and think she has a good chance of getting an acceptance, I am a little nervous about her not applying till post Dec 15th is UNsuccessful…

missypie - we don’t have an application completed here, let alone an acceptance!! I did see that there was one addition to that thread - perhaps NJP?

happy64- Your D can apply to other schools while she waits, she just has to pull the apps back if she gets in ED. It would be worth the money to me to at least get a couple of other apps in. Good luck! S decided to not apply ED because although he has a 1st choice, he wants to reevaluate again in April.
