Missypie- re: putting down housing deposit. Did you do that now to ensure your D a favored dorm? I assume that if you wait until after April 1, selection of housing is more limited. Is there another reason to do that that I’m missing?

Yes. This is a state flagship. The school has everything from “OMG this suite is fabulous” to “OMG how can a dorm room this far south not be air conditioned?”. Little Miss Woods Comma Elle definitely wants the former.

It seems to be mostly the large state schools that advise prospective students to put down deposits immediately. The deposit is usually fully or almost fully refundable if you change your mind in the spring.

As for hair straighteners, anyone here ever had a Brazilian blowout? My hair lady has been talking to me about doing it. Its supposed to be good for your hair and last 12 weeks. Expensive though.

Tomorrow is our first EA deadline. Common App and supp is done, but I have asked him to print everything out for us to proof read before he clicks send. Not sure he understands why. Still has to burn his music onto CDs, so we can mail the art supplement stuff tomorrow. Nothing like getting everything in just under the wire! I can’t say he has been procrastinating though. Its just that darn school work kept getting in the way.

That is how I feel–great at some parts, and sorry guys, I really kinda lost it the other day over the FinAid…
Doing better because I have realized I cannot fight this…I just have to realize it’s only money…

As for Chi–I have had mine for years–and its been great…The plates are like 2 inches by 4 inches…

I heard recently that Brazilian blowout has a ton of chemicals–even the ones that say they don’t–I would google OSHA in your state to see because I heard ay my salon that OSHA was about to ban it …
I am not in the biz --so only going by what my stylist said…As a teen my hairdresser tried those creme relaxers on my hair. I liked the very straight result–However, the kinky curly stuff grows in and its kind of weird to have this straight stuff on the bottom/ends with curly /frizz on top… I am convinced every single strand is rebellious and goes its own way!

If my Chi dies, where do I find a Sedu? Online?
Missy, What’s the scoop on Barlean’s flax seed oil ?? Do you take capsules, or is this something you put on your hair topically??

I bought my Sedu at Ulta but you can also find them online, probably for less money.

I posted that I have chronically dry eyes, that the doc had recommended fish oil but that I couldn’t tolerate it. Someone posted that Barlean’s flax seed oil had cured her friend’s dry eyes so I ordered some. No discernable help for my eyes, but it’s great for my skin and hair.

By the way friends,
Thanks for not “voting me off the island” when I got the bad FinAid news the other day…
You would not belive the nasty posters on the FinAid forum…I am NOT going back there…Had hoped someone with similar situation could help–and initally posters were haters…
Self employed(s) get it–the tax this is a nightmare and the whole double FICA, limits of medical deductions based on AGI etc , its just a royal pain…

Anyhow–please for give the temper tantrum.

What was your perceived transgression? Are parents not allowed to vent about financial shocks?

I believe Brazilian blow-out uses formaldehyde. It is extremely toxic. But it looks great after its done, I have a friend that gets it done. I think they do it outside. But I can’t criticize as I used to get the gel nails since I have little kid-like nails & hands. I’m sure they are not good for you either.

Okay, I know now that I am not the only mom in this thread who is self-employed or has had an epidural (or two.)

But I suddenly feel like I’m the only one who has naturally straight-as-a-stick hair and wishes it would hold a curl!

Ack, I just googled Brazilian blowout – forget it!

Also a member of the self-employed and used epidural club.

^^ OWM - Mine is none of the above, which is what makes it so annoying. Kind of straight, a bit of wave in some parts, but frizzes if I let it dry on its own. It rarely holds curl. I’d rather have curls or straight…I have neither. The color is equally non-descript. What I have most days is a ponytail which makes me look like a kid, but it’s out of the way. I swear I’m going to be snapped up for one of those stinking on camera make-overs someday set up by my stunning, stylish, well meaning friends!

I got slammed by some haters on the FinAid forum…
people who said things with an attitude like they thought I had a McMansion and got what I deserved…
Some pretty ugly judgemental stuff…
and they have no idea who I am, what I have etc…or what kiddo thinks/does etc

Some even accused me of not doing my homework etc…
sigh

It was all I could do to not be childish and say something about karma and when they will find out in time what their finaid will be, they may be shocked too… …

It is easy for people to be ugly when they are being cyber bullies/cowards behind a computer screen…and some were…

And…one “new” poster- with no profile history and no previous posts, Posts “the first time” in that thread…uh huh…not buying it…
Supposedly that parent has been here on CC for awhile–yet the join date is THIS month…so my guess is, either its someone with a different profile name here on CC hiding behind a new name, who registered a second name OR a ■■■■■…imho, it was weird

Not my problemo…

After your post I went over to the financial aid forum and glanced at a few replies. Sounds like people who are not experts in financial aid/FAFSA/tax law should not be posting questions or concerns over there lest they get their heads bitten off!

I am a partner at a law firm, so I have many of the same self-employment issues. There is not a “benefit” that I have - 401K, insurance - that I don’t pay 100% for myself.

^^ exactly…

Did you see the comment that told me to stop being self employed and go get a job!
Uh, yeah and in this economy…

People can gripe all about their employer yet don’t think about how the employer covers a ton of stuff for them–and if they were self employeed, they’d pay all of the FICA , insurance premiums, taxes, unemployement, there is no PAID holiday( sick day, vacation etc…)
Often people say stuff and are clueless…especially about the tax implications…

Sooo It’s 5 oclock somewhere and who’s ready for a martini :o
Then some dinner…and a hot fudge sundae - after all that chocolate is good for us, right !

I still have to work on kiddos Sr dedication page…I have GOT to get my act together on that…

Hugs all around, congrats to those with acceptances and Hurray to those pushing “submit”!!!

Getting ready to go to a rare Thursday night football game. I rarely go to away games, much less away games on a Thursday night…but unless we make the playoffs, there are only two games left…HS drill team has been my favorite kid activity…they look so adorable in their outfits and are so talented and are such good girls. Okay, I’m going to make myself cry…

Fogfog, I thought your FinAid thread was fascinating. Aside from some ugly replies, of cause.

I am planning to spend the upcoming weekend finalizing our CSS Profile. We are not self-employed and dont have any unusual income, assets, etc. So it is not that bad. However, I am not sure, if we will qualify for any need-based aid. Most likely all this work will result in nada. I used FAFSA4Caster, EFC Calculators on the CollegeBoard . com and another website. Each came with a different number.

Ill have a martini. Thank you.

I have not begun the financial aid forms for DS2 - yikes. I am just going to have to plow thru and hope for the best in the day I set aside just for that task next week ! I am fairly sure there will be little, if any, aid, for this self-employed parent of two college age kids. I have also thought of encouraging DS2, if he picks a big ticket price wise school, to take a gap year and work - so that DS1 and DS2 will overlap only one year… if the aid is really low…I am not expecting wonders, and would be thrilled if the EFC was what we needed to pay without loans/gaps/etc.

DS2 filed all the transcript requests today.

And, DS2 seems to have finalized his “why first choice school” essay and his main common app essay. Query: how many kids submit a second common app essay in the optional section? DS1 did not submit a second essay… Also, DS2 has a very short main essay, though his supplementary essays for his EA school are running very, very long…

Are you talking about Additional Information section of the common app? Most kids download their resume there or just put additional AP scores, awards, etc.

D has set her sights on Saturday to submit her ED app. She’s still finalizing her edits on the supplemental essay. Two of three teachers have submitted their recs online. Her GC has submitted the school report form and ED agreement. I’ve submitted my ED agreement. Not sure if the school sends the transcript electronically or if they actually mail them. I ordered a copy of her ACT score sent to the college today. We’re getting closer!
