Parents of the HS Class of 2011 - Original

UT, I’m helping redo the profile for D1’s school and it’s not quite there yet, even with tons of students applying EA/ED. For one thing, the GC is still gathering data from the students. Not everyone sends their SATs or ACTs to the school, so they need to ask students to report their scores to calculate the averages. Or, it’s the students who get reports from CollegeBoard when they’re named AP Scholars, so we need to have the students self-report who is Scholar with Distinction, National Scholar, and so forth.

Maybe I should worry more? :)

D piddled away after school yesterday … I was too nice … then she had a singing rehearsal … was going to do app stuff afterwards … but came home exhausted, fell asleep on the couch. Woke up sick this morning.

Great.

This great week of finally getting to work is not looking good. Or maybe being sick she can sit and think and write, instead of gallivanting around. Well, either way, she’s writing those essays.

Of course yesterday I also paid for our trip to UMinn this weekend, all unrefundable …

Aaargh!

The good news is that she went to school (“I am NOT staying home!”). Tomorrow is a half day with shortened classes, and I may keep her here. We’ll see what she says. But this is a very typical pattern, procrastinate about work and then find herself not feeling well and everything’s 10X as hard.

Thanks for listening! Now I can get on with my day …

EmmyBet - Enjoy your time at the U of Minn. I suppose your weather is just like ours, but for some reason the wind comes off the Mississippi and really whips through the air on campus. Toss a light weight neck scarf in your purse and you will be soooooo happy!

Is your D seeing the school for the first time or interviewing? S did not interview, hope that wasn’t a mistake…

Thank you!

D always planned to apply; she is a theatre kid and a very good friend is there finishing her BA and loves it. D did a priority app weeks ago (although they will not give an answer until November) - no essay, no recs, just transcript, basic app and ACT score. She won’t interview, although she plans to meet people in the theatre dept and go to one or two productions (for outsiders, in WI we have a statewide teacher’s convention this week, with Thurs and Fri off for everyone).

She likes the programs, likes Twin Cities from other visits, and we’ll see how she feels about the campus and people. This is so far a well-liked pretty much a safety for her. If she really loves it there, that would be a great feeling for all of us, because it could be a perfect option.

Morning all. I think it might be monsoon season in the midwest  Windy & torrential rain this am, now the sun is out. Go figure

D decided to have writing teacher re-review her essays this week so her 2 EA apps are on hold until that is done. D sees no reason to submit either app until the 11/1 due date. I’m a worrywart- so I think some catastrophe ( computer crash, server down) could happen on 10/31 thus preventing her apps from being submitted. Aack!

Have to share a story of information sharing gone wrong. One of D’s friends ( a senior last year) told her she got into USC (Southern Cal) but was deferring so she could move to California, live there for a year and then get residency for in state tuition. Ummmm… USC is a private school. No in or out of state tuition. I felt bad that she would make that up- and my D kept insisting that she wasn’t lying. Sad.

Thought we had D’s list finalized, but she has now begun to receive letters from schools offering guaranteed full rides for National Achievement if she makes finalist. She will probably add one or two new apps which means a quick scramble to figure out application deadlines, send scores & transcripts etc. Hard to pass on a possible full ride opportunity-even if the schools are not her top choices. But of course, it means added stress.

On School Profiles…
Isn’t that data calculated each year on the previous class–that has already graduated??
It includes where kids are admitted and the AP test scores etc…for the graduating class, not where jrs are etc–though you can infer some things from it for your jr…

I am a little annoyed our hs hasn’t done their profile yet–It uses through 7 semesters for the graduating class to show achievement bands…

Its Oct 26 th people!!

I do know they are sending the one from last year–though the data is slightly different–I guess it’s not so statistically different from year to year–just a matter of updating admits/attending…

fogfog, I’m actually shocked that so many of you are having issues with the school profile. Our hs is manic about getting all of the information necessary to have a complete and up-to-date profile. Seniors are constantly reminded to inform their counselors of any scholarships, university acceptances or rejections, awards, honors, etc.

I’ve never heard of a kid not sending their scores to the high school. I don’t even think kids at Ds hs have that option. They just have the option of not having those scores show on the transcript.

Hi Dignified

Actually scores are never supposed to appear on transcripts. I think Xiggi has the intel on that and the “why”…there is thread somewehre about it.

Wish our hs was as up to date with the profile as yours.

The kids do not have to send scores to the hs…and our kid planned to not have the scores reported…and would give the choice to the student…However it seems the hs gets them anyway because of the code that tells the SAT/ACT folks where the kid goes to hs…
According to the GC, thats how they get those scores…

There’ve been some cautionary tales in the past on CC about scores showing up on the transcript when the student didn’t want them to show. On the other hand, you want to have them show up if they’re good so that your child’s school will be aware of them for any appropriate scholarships. Regardless, the schools here don’t get 'em unless the student specifically releases them.

It’s always updated for the current year where possible. That sometimes includes last year’s seniors, but not always. For instance, the average SAT and ACT scores are from the class of 2011 alone. The school gives the AP pass rates for each subject offered based on tests taken in May 2010; that includes seniors. However, for the AP Honors, the profile gives awards for the class of 2011, based on tests taken last May. Ditto for other student awards and honors; it’s for awards during the 2009-2010 school year. Many of these are school-wide honors with teams comprised of 9th-12th graders.

Anyway, the GC and I have been trading email today, so we are almost finished.

Word to the wise for any of those who are waiting until Oct 31 or Nov 1 to push SUBMIT…DON’T. It literally took us hours to get the our first CA submitted last weekend. True, I insisted we reread everything word by word which was good because the graduation year was wrong. Also found a few other boo boos. We had computer and printer problems. We also had to create an alternate format. If we were doing this under time pressure, it would have been a nightmare. Instead it was just long. Also we did not know we had to invite teachers to submit LORs b/c ours are done manually. There was a bit of a learning curve.

I have a related question. Since snail mail seems to take so long, should S mail the LORs now even though he won’t be finalizing CA until this weekend or next.

^^^ Yes yes yes.

In our experience–the snail mail is taking a very long time to be connected to our student’s file…and from what we are reading online at the school’s website–it can take 4-5 weeks to match up the rec letters coming in separately withe the CA files on hand.

Anything you can send electronically instead of by snail mail–do it.
Also, it seems that it’s best sent together–meaning if the Common App is done, and the Supplement is done–and your student can go to the school and get the GC to attach their parts to it—so it goes in one file–Do it.

You all may recall that I was not so excited to have our student pressing submit at the school–However given the last 2 weeks of snail mail h3ll…, I am all for having the GC look over my student’s should, attaching the GC rec, transcript and profile into the file and let’em press submit. together at school.

If you student knows he/she is applying, then no sense in waiting…

FLMM…I was thinking the same thing about any RD apps that might go out–and not letting it slide til too late as well…

AND–was thinking about that PROFILE I must send and not waiting til the end of the week for that too…

D is almost ready to push the big submit button. She went over last night line by line of the common app. She was also able to see which recs have been sent and which ones have not. Almost everything is in place. I started the CSS profile last night( I know I should have started weeks ago). It was a tedious process but I got through it all. I haven’t submitted it yet though. I wanted to have fresh eyes before I hit send. Glad the process has started and D has made really good progress.

Hi all - our HS transcript does show scores. The kids have to sign an acknowledgement that they understand all scores are on the transcript. I like it; it discourages taking the tests 4 or 5 times; a good thing in my opinion.

So fogfog - You think S should mail the LORs now even tho he won’t be submitting CA for another week or two? Unfortunately he cannot submit LOR electronically. Maybe if I give birth next year and then wait 17 more, the school will have that capability.

^^^ hahahahahahahahahahaha
Fl MM you crack me up!

I can only go by what we have experienced for this school and EA, and the app made it online within 24 hrs of pressing submit…and the LOR mailed the same day are still yet to be found…
This schools gets a good # of ea apps…and so I expect the mail the last 2 weeks of Oct is pretty heavy …

If your student doesn’t have Nov 1 deadline…I guess it wont matter…
I am guessing as the weeks go by, more and more mail will pile in…so if its a matter of chasing down pieces of paper–for us I dont want our GCs to wait…so best not to leave it to the last minute.
That said, as I understand it–the AdComs get so much mail and apps are read When They Are Complete…and they expect it to take weeks to match up LORs with CAs etc…

Got an email reply from the GC today, letting me know that transcripts were uploaded into CA along with the school report. Yay! Here I was thinking they might have to snail mail them. However, I don’t know if that includes a school profile. Her school only offers 4 AP classes - so I want the colleges to know this information. Don’t want them to think she’s a slacker because she “only” took 3.

So I’m feeling calmer about the whole thing now. D and I are going to a school district talk about scholarships tonight. Maybe it will light a fire under D to start looking for scholarships.

A conversation today:
Mother (do I refer to her as M?): I’m sure you can’t wait for this all to be over.
Me: No, I’m fine.
Mother: Oh, well I can’t wait for this to be over.

She’s always been more worried about me than I have.
Do any parents here feel like this and think their children feel like I do?

^ Best to ask the kids…not the parents, ha ha
and you have to knwo whether the kids are done with apps, essays, and teacher recs? Are their SAT and ACT scores top notch?

Hey folks

Ok so 10/14 kid 1 submits CA app to chocie 1 and its paid…and CA shows paid 10/14…
fast forward,
I just paid for app submitted to safety–and its 10/26…
soooo
looking back on choice 1, the paid date on CA is now changed to 10/26…
weird

Kid1 checked online status of choice 1 school in their system, all is well and they show paid…
CA definitely has a glitch here…

You kidding me? This whole process has me so stressed. S is "whatever. " I should be happy that he says he will be happy at any of his schools and isn’t stressing over anything to do with this process. He “thinks” essays are done. I haven’t seen the latest revs so maybe they are. But, such confidence! He will be hitting submit for all 12 of his schools by Sunday. Then he needs to start working on the merit apps. He is way ahead of all of his friends, most haven’t even started essays or apps.

Good luck Saint.

Good Morning, all!
S applied to another 2 colleges yesterday. 6 more to go. We will know if he made a semi-finalist in a scholarship he applied to this Friday. If he didn’t, one of the schools will be yanked from his list. So it’s a win-win situation. I need to get to the post office today to send our 2009 taxes to his EA school.

@SaintSaens -I don’t want it to be over. But it’s me not S who is checking the application statuses 5-7 times a day. He applied EA to one very selective school, so most likely he will be deferred in December. Then we’ll have to wait ‘till April for decisions, and I am not looking forward for the first Q of 2011. And he is like “I will be fine, mom.” I am thinking about secretly applying to a rolling admission school for him. (jk)
