Re being “interested” in the election results: Isn’t everyone’s kid taking AP Government right now? Mine is required to be interested in the election results. They had to log a certain number of hours for a campaign, have to bring in results, etc.

Missypie – At our school AP US Gov is a semester course and my son will be taking it next semester. Right now, he’s taking AP Psych which is also a semester course. BUT, he’s interested in politics (not as a major, however) and he and some friends had an “election” party on Tuesday evening. They got together for about 3 hours to watch the election results on TV. Wish he made as much time for the college applications…

So sorry to hear about the parent health issues going on. My mom is recovering from stroke. She has been in a rehab facility for 8 weeks and will finally be going home on Friday. So, it’s finally good news for us on this front!

Pepper- I love that the teacher put in a meditation CD for them! How thoughtful. I’m with you on the eye-rolling. I am only hoping we can get most of the college stuff done here between the end of the quarter (Friday) and the beginning of her theater obligations (end of the month) which will be the last gasp of free time.

We have also looked to the mid-west for both lower cost and the tiny blip of an advantage geographic diversity may give her. D has friends who have gone to midwestern LACs and state unis so she has an open mind about it.

Gosh…get sick for a few days and I feel like I’ve missed so much!! Kids are so different about parents seeing their college information before they do. It can relate to the relationship, the importance of the school (I don’t care if you look at the safety, but don’t touch the dream school!), etc. I knew my son’s rolling admit, which was stat based only and a matter of the application, but simply asked him if he’d checked his account online. He drug it out for a day! When he checked he hugged me and said ‘You knew, didn’t you!’. Y’think Sherlock?

He and I are not on great terms right now which is very out of the ordinary for us. He is dragging out the app process so long that it’s making everyone miserable. He drags his feet contacting teachers etc. He’s writing the essays for the Common App and Supplement, however thinks that filling out the app itself is no big deal. Seriously son? I’ve tried to explain that there are ways to fill it out, and better ways to fill it out. He only has one school on the Common App and his father spoke with him to see if his hesitation was with the school, not the application…not so. It’s his first choice and with his new SATs he’s at their 75th percentile. This only means his scores are on target (they use holistic admissions), but he wouldn’t feel like it was a waste of time.

We are hoping that when the subject tests are over this weekend he’ll be more focused. We were very frustrated to find that a teacher that was doing a recommendation (who asked for information last Spring so she could do them over the Summer) had not done the LOR as of last week. He took her a packet with a cover letter, hard copies of forms from each school, and stamped envelopes in September. We anticipate a really good recommendation, but it’s just odd (not to mention a pain as it’s going snail-mail and will take that much longer to find it’s way to the right place in admissions).

“He and I are not on great terms right now which is very out of the ordinary for us. He is dragging out the app process so long that it’s making everyone miserable.”

I feel you. D and I were like this a couple weeks ago. VERY unusual for us. Luckily things have turned around. Not really sure why; I think we both adjusted our attitudes. We are not much further along on the apps but its sooooo much nicer to be around her right now. Hang in there. I am sure you guys will turn the corner too.

hey there emmybet! glad you’re back and that apps are moving forward.
renaissancemom: take a deep breath…okay, I am sure that when you call the school, they will understand, especially as you have the receipts. Human error never takes a day off!

Frequent reader, occasional poster on this thread. Just wanted to say we had a wonderful visit to a small LAC a few miles from home yesterday – smaller than DS’ high school, but beautiful campus, and everyone made us feel very “wanted.” DS is also a soccer player, so that is part of our college search, and the coach there is very interested. We’ve had two handwritten letters from him, plus got to talk to him for about 20 minutes yesterday. We had lunch in the dining hall as part of the tour and six of the soccer players had lunch with us, so DS (and me!) got to ask a lot of questions about practice time, travel, etc. They were all super-nice young men, and spoke a lot about the school itself, and not just soccer.

Then I checked DS’ application status with another local university, which is his first choice school, and today it said “Congratulations! You have been accepted . . .”

So, it’s really nice to know that the #1 choice is in the bag, and the #2 choice is a fabulous one as well.

Congrats to everyone else who has had good news lately.

^excellent news and congratulations to S. First choice !!!

CGPM59 - congrats to your S! I hope he also gets into his 2nd choice.

BI- glad you are feeling a little better.

Congrats, cgpm59!

I have a request to make: I understand that people might feel reluctant to tell people where their children are applying, or what schools may or may not be on the list. I can even understand if people don’t want to post the names of schools where their kids get rejected. But please, if your kid gets an admit letter, please please please share the happy news and the name! Inquiring minds want to know! :)

cgpm59 - whoot-whoot!! Congratulations to your DS!!
If you haven’t and don’t mind sharing the school, please add his good news to the 2011 acceptance thread.

I don’t mind sharing at all and I’ll go post on the acceptances thread next. The “in the bag” school is St. Edward’s University here in Austin; the school we toured yesterday is Southwestern University in Georgetown. St. Ed’s has an undergraduate enrollment of about 3,500 and also has a graduate school and a “new school” for people with full-time jobs, so total enrollment is about 5,300. Southwestern is an LAC (Methodist affiliation) with about 1,300 students and no graduate school. In athletics, St. Ed’s is D-2 and Southwestern is D-3. Son wanted to stay close to home (although he will be living in the dorm for at least a year, no matter where he goes; I think that’s an important aspect of “going to college” too). His high school has an enrollment of about 2,300, so Southwestern will be noticeably smaller in feel.

Congrats cgpm it is great to have a good acceptance in. My S has one in Alabama as well. It has helped to take some of the major stress off for this year.

So with the acceptances rolling in, are stress levels coming down? I think we might be taking a little breather before the institutional scholarship competitions begin.

In the meantime, diving and marching band have ended, and even with heading back to work, od1 should find herself with some free time a couple of days a week. She probably won’t know what to do with herself.

With one “in the bag” with CMU, DS has decided to apply RD to all other schools, so the pressure is off.
Meanwhile, a good friend of DD lost her mother to cancer this weekend. DD missed some classes to come home from college and attend the funeral today. I am glad that I have raised a caring daughter.

The acceptances are a relief but now D is getting offers to apply for scholarship money by writing essays etc. I am doing my best to encourage her to follow through. Won’t be any problem with the ones high on her list, but it may be a battle for schools farther down . I just want her to have plenty of options in the spring.

“So with the acceptances rolling in, are stress levels coming down?”

My son hasn’t even submitted one application yet. So that would be a no.

I anticipate an ever-climbing stress level. D1 will first hear from her ED school, so the odds are that she will start off the entire cycle with a rejection.

EngrMom, kudos to your daughter for being such a kind friend.

D got a letter from University of Texas today, (received an acceptance last week) and I was all excited because it I could see it said “Congratulations” as she is waiting to hear back from the 2 different honors programs. But my parade quickly ended when all it was, was a letter wanting the enrollment deposit…lol. Maybe tomorrow…(even though it is not probable until December some time…one can hope)

Collegeshopping – I work for a state agency across the street from UT. I can see the football stadium and the southeast corner of campus out my window. It’s a gorgeous fall day here today.
