Parents of the HS Class of 2011 - Original

Thanks for the quick answers!

I also have a quick question. I’m sure the answer is somewhere here already on this site (maybe even somewhere in this thread!), but I just can’t find it.

For all the schools that have a Jan 1 deadline for application, will it meet the requirements for all SAT scores to be sent once the Dec scores are received on Dec 20? I know some posters were suggesting that they are sending scores NOW, but it that really necessary??? These are all schools that accept Dec SAT scores, and some of them even accept Jan scores.

Is there a general rule for this, or should I just check with each school?

missypie: It must feel SO awesome to be 100% done - have everything in, deposits made, etc. SO GREAT!!

collegeshopping - you are in my thoughts, and my fingers are crossed for good and productive news/information.

Regarding the CA essay, we were told to make it not much more than a page - probably makes that about 700 words or so - I think that was going along the lines of too much writing would make the reader lose interest sooner rather than later…

On our end, we are just waiting around for 12/15…sigh…!

^^ There is no general rule as to the last acceptable SAT date; to be completely safe, review each school’s website.

UT: All of my D’s school definitely ACCEPT the December SAT. What I’m not sure about is whether or not I need to arrange to have the SAT scores sent BEFORE we receive the results on 12/20. Does anyone know?

WE are off tomorrow on a long 3.5 hour drive each way to visit a college my d has been accepted to. She is visiting a class then doing the tour. Hopefully it will be an good driving day. Then this weekend she will finish her last two applications. One is just a matter of putting together the package to send and have her sign the application and there other has a supplement and is a bit harder.

She did get great news from her online CC teacher. SHe has only a final left and she was asking some specific questions on how to do the assignment. THe teacher wrote back how she is so far ahead of the curve in her class that she doesn’t need to do the full assignment, simply an outline and that she wishes she could award an A+ for the grade (the school doesn’t have plus or minus grades). Knowing my d, I am fairly sure she will do the complete final anyway because she just feels she should.

After having one school give us an incredibly hard time about having everything in hand by their deadline, I am making sure schools have everything in hand by their deadline. I regret not sending an old score, no matter how much lower, to that school, while we waited too long, it turned out, for the new score.

I think when schools say they’ll accept that newer score, it doesn’t mean that’s the score that fills their requirement for a score. It means they’ll take it as further information. There is a point where they won’t look at new scores any more; that’s what they’re talking about, such as not applying January scores to EA or ED applications, for example.

Send scores - it felt awful to lose our chance at EA; I can’t imagine what it would be like to lose our chance at applying at all, especially for such an avoidable reason (and one that feels 100% like Mom’s fault).

Thanks for the response EmmyBet! And, sorry to hear about your EA/ED problem. Sounds awful!

So your take on it is that ALL required scores should be at the college by the deadline, and then “substitute” December scores will also be considered when sent after the deadline. So, then as an example, if 2 subject tests are required and only one is received by the college BEFORE Jan 1, this would be a BIG problem, as the Dec test can only provide an “update” to an already received score.

This is good to be warned, as this is exactly what we were thinking of doing.

camathmom, the dec scores will probably only get there on time if you choose to send them before you know what the score is. my S took the nov test and although I sent all his schools the report on the day he was informed of the score, they are still pending 10 days later. thank goodness these scores do not need to arrive until jan.1.

If you order those Dec scores right now, they will be sent before you have a chance to see them and change your mind. If it’s a needed SAT II score, there is no choice. However, it’s a redo hoping for better results–one would wish to see the score otherwise you might send a lower score. Yipe.

My best advice would be to order the scores now and pay the $29 rush fee. The one charge covers them sending all the scores you order rush. You get 4 free scores sent, so this $29 is for added safety in getting them in on time.

OTOH, we had no problem at all with test scores or even LORs arriving a little past due dates at S1’s colleges. THey tend to have so many applicants arriving at the deadline that they really don’t have time to read all the files that first day–we were told. You can also fax the unofficial result (which they will not accept as if it’s real–but does allow them to see what they are going to get). Our GCs are very very reassuring on this topic for most colleges. One notable exception seems to be U of Michigan. Go figure.

Sorry to hear what happened EmmyBet. Mind if I ask what school had that “strict” EA deadline policy? :(

Though from my own experience, while I did not submit any applications Early Decision or Early Action, I still went ahead and sent scores to schools that I was planning to apply (or had applied) to. I wanted my application file to be completed by the time my applications arrived.

(Note: I have no plans to take any December SAT/ACT tests)

Just received word that I’ve been accepted to another school I applied to. Though it came from one of my safety schools I applied to: California State University-Los Angeles.

I’ll deal with the majority of the heart attack(s) come March/April. :)

Gecko, great post and thanks for sharing your perspective with us. You sound extremely capable and resourceful. I guess it’s not so much kids like you who I feel sorry for (though I respect the heck out of what you’re doing), it’s the ones who don’t have parental help and support, but also lack the know-how, wherewithal, to know how to even begin to approach this.

Many kids, though very good students, simply have never come up against this sort of multi-tentacled, herculean task before, and they are stymied before they even get off the ground. They simply don’t know what they don’t know. Kudos to you for what sounds like unusual competence, diligence, and resourcefulness! Best of luck with your college plans!

Collegeshopping, still no call from the doc? (Or did I miss it? Reading fast.) Thinking of you and your D…knowing your wait is way tougher than my daily whine about why the mailbox doesn’t contain what we’re fervently waiting for. Hoping for good news first thing in the am.

And while we’re on the subject, amanda, those 3 medical geniuses were in the same room with you, looking at your son’s scans, and when you asked a question about what they saw, they didn’t answer you? Are you kidding me???
I hope you straightened them out about who’s on the "Need-to-Know list for a kid’s diagnosis, and how high up on that list Mom is! Sheesh!

MIlitaryMom- good luck with the drive and the visit. Long drive=nice time for an audio book!

Emmybet- Hopefully, it all works out, just won’t get that early yes, but get it in April.

Will - congrats on acceptance.

momofsongbird - I believe I live in the land of lawsuit mania where yes, all radiologists are cagey and no, they wouldn’t answer me directly but deferred to the ER doc’s who told me later that the radiologist wouldn’t commit to their being a problem but that it was an abnormal result…it was a whole Grey’s Anatomy episode really (minus the sexy drs.)
collegeshopping - Hope you get an answer and quickly, I know how irritating it can be when it seems the only one with a sense of urgency is the Mom. With my dd, they never got to the bottom of it and basically said it probably was in her head which we both knew was not a good answer.

militarymom - Hope you are not driving around Buffalo! Boy they got socked yesterday!

Best wishes collegeshopping for good news today. We had a couple of scares this summer with my daughter (8th grade) and it is just awful having to wait.

It’s so hard to keep up with this thread! Congrats to all getting good news!

I can only stress to everyone how slow and horrible College Board is. It’s pretty outrageous how stupid and complicated their system is. Most colleges seem flexible about the scores but not all-I hope ACT is better run and puts them out of business. I mean really-these scores could all be sent electronically-couldn’t they? I don’t know but it sure seems like it. They certainly are efficient when it comes to charging you-they got those charges in the very next business day while we are still waiting on 11/19 score requests.

My advice is send them in right now! Now S is taking the ST for the last time tomorrow. He only has a few schools that require them so I can go to each school’s website and see what their policy is. I certainly don’t want to send the first batch-however a couple of schools don’t honor score choice so they are going to get them anyway so I will use the free reports on them.

He is signed up for three but I told him I wouldn’t retake the science one-and my understanding is if you don’t take one it just goes away as if you never signed up for it-so he’ll just have on his record for December 4 two tests and there will be no mention of a third. If he wants to take a crack at the science I told him he should take it last-and it could hurt him at the schools that will see everything.

You know-I don’t think he really cares anymore! He told his father last night after my husband got after him to study that it was “His life, his scores, and his decision”-and he would study for them after he got his schoolwork done! I kinda wanted to clap because he did it in such a nice way but got the point across loud and clear! He really is growing up. :)

Pepper03: It sounds like your son is ready for college! I hope he does well tomorrow.

Good luck to all the kids taking SATs and subject tests tomorrow. I hope that this is the end of the testing road for all of the 2011’s.

Collegeshopping: I hope your hear from the doctor soon and your daughter continues to improve.

Happy Friday!

Good luck to everyone tomorrow - we all certainly know the feeling. I hope this can be it for all of these seniors. Being done is a very nice thing.

In the end I think only one of the schools on our list is fussy about having the score in hand. But while they listed “what they want” on the deadline, I was surprised that having scores in transit was not enough for them. Most schools say they “want” them, but most seem to mean only the student’s app absolutely needs to make the deadline date. It makes me paranoid that another school could suddenly say their policy is “everything in hand,” too. So because of our experience I’ve sent the rest a month or more early to be safe.

But if you know the schools are OK (and many of ours are) if scores and teacher stuff comes in afterwards, then believe it and wait for the score. It is a school-by-school thing. I recommend both: knowing the answer, and not taking chances with the score people.

The school in question was SUNY New Paltz. Thank you for the consolation about having to wait; fortunately they said that they will start on RD apps on a rolling basis, as soon as they’re done with EA apps, so even if she did get put in the RD pile, they said we should hear by the end of January. So it’s not the worst case scenario.

I agree that sometimes it’s thrilling when these kids get mad at us and show their claws (in a nice enough way). They’ll need that strength next year for sure.

Emmy claws and fangs-all in a very nice but firm way!

They absolutely will need that next year-it’s really a special time to watch them grow. As stressful and annoying and exhausting as the past months have been I for one can say my son has grown up a lot-and it sounds from what I read on here so have others.

He still is a procrastinator though-although one WITH an appendix! :)
