Parents of the HS Class of 2011 - Original

Wow! Everyone is here for Monday morning coffee and chat.

amandak–loved hearing about your son’s last band performance. But… is this guy who was dancing on the field this past weekend the same guy who was just (seems like yesterday) having major surgery? They heal fast in your house!!

As for the list of teary “lasts,” I hear you, too. S2 is my last chick in the nest–so every last is really really a last. Sigh! Although, we are joining Pepper03 in mini-celebration in that S2 took his LAST thing-that-shall-not-be-named on Saturday. And that is one “last” experience we are happy to see the back of around here.

Update on that: I called the College Board to find out how to send score reports from the standby testing. The guy in customer service told me that 1) the score results from the Dec test date will be merged with S2’s online account. (How? When?) No answers, it “just happens.” Hm. As for ordering score reports, he said the only way to get the 4 free reports is if the info was entered on the paper registration. S2 did not list any. I asked if we could update that? He said no. I asked if we could pre-order score reports then. He said no. So, according to Jimmy, the scores would just magically appear somehow on Dec 21, merged to S2’s online account. After that, we could order (and pay for) and reports.

Seemed too weird. Could they really disallow ordering one’s free score reports after the paper registration was submitted on the day of testing? I–ahem–thanked Jimmy, hung up, and called back. This time I spoke with Keely. She had a completely different answer! She said we have until Dec 13 to pre-order score reports (including the 4 free reports) if we want. To do this, we will need to call customer service (I’ll be sure to avoid speaking to Jimmy) and they find your online account and can add them. Later, when the tests are scored, they get uploaded to the online account and score reports are sent. Or so Keely explained. I sure liked her explanation better than Jimmy’s. But we shall see.

Anyway, the fastest way to get scores sent is to pre-order. They are sent on the date (sometimes even the day before) they get released online. Of course, the student will not get to pre-screen those scores. If they are lower, still get sent. Also, no score choice. For those who wish to wait to see their scores, she gave this info re: the $29 rush charge: For once charge of $29, CB sends the scores to all schools on your list (at $10/school, of course) and promises to process those reports in 2 business days. That means, they are available for electronic download (to colleges that get their scores that way) and mailed to colleges who request that method 2 bus days after the order date. Without the rush charge, it can take up to 2 weeks (!!) for this processing. Of course, some schools will only choose to download scores once a week, for example. So it can be wise to check with the schools in question if the rush wouldn’t be a help.

Hopefully, the kids here do not need this last-minute rush advice. Even for S2, he’s sent his previous scores to all schools already, so no panic. But we’ll likely take the 4 free score reports (hmm–if Keely was right and Jimmy was wrong!) just in case.

End of lengthy and hair-pulling report on dealing with them-that-shall be named.

madbean, glad you got your info. (I like Keely better than Jimmy, too.)

Huge congrats to your S for putting those-that-shall-not-be-named behind him!

Thanks to all of you, I sent my son’s last two school’s scores on Dec 3. I just checked and our dear friends at CB said they were sent Dec 4. Since they are not due til 1/1, we should be OK.

OWM - that is a wonderful gift to find. I’ve kept every card my husband and son have given to me. About 10 years ago, my son started writing poems for all of for our birthdays, anniversarys, Mother’s Day & Father’s Day. Everyone looks forward to them. It is interesting to see how they and he has evolved. If I ever need a good cry, I rummage thru them.

Bought myself a holiday present - a new washer & dryer. It arrived today. Now maybe it won’t take an hour plus for clothes to dry.

My dryer is taking forever to dry a normal load of clothes also. I am hoping we have some time to take a look at it over the holidays and it ends up being something relatively inexpensive. Otherwise I will continue to live with it a while, at least til we are out of heating season.

Well, I guess we ARE all in the same boat or possibly flotilla…

I am the happy owner of a new washer and dryer (the week before Thanksgiving) after 8 months of poorly performing drying and then the washer springing a leak and very strange noises, I couldn’t take it any more! Got a great deal and soft, uber fluffy laundry, sad that this makes me so very happy!!

We are patiently waiting on the ED result on the 15th although they said if she called on the 13th they’d tell her! So one more week of biting nails. Although DD said I could open anything I am hoping they don’t tell her by phone or e mail - I am so hoping to have balloons in her school colours and a banner waiting for her when she comes home as the mail is usually here before she gets home - is that pathetic? Should I just let her have the ‘moment’ ? I think I may be more excited than her - although that would be a close thing…

I am so glad there are others out there who are as involved in this arduous but fun part of their teenagers lives, none of my friends seem terribly interested here but I always know when I check in on CC someone will be talking about it!

I thought you guys would find this funny:
I applied to Fordham over the weekend. I got an e-mail today offering a convenient application with fewer questions and no application fee. Thanks Fordham.

SS - That is sad, and funny. I’d be tempted to call them and see if they’d refund your fee. It only seems fair.

happy - Things sound nice at your house. I know it’s intense to wait, but exciting, too. And I agree that it’s a lifesaver to know where to take one’s college angst. Everyone in town would avoid me if I tried talking this much about it in person.

One thing I’m grateful for is that I have several friends with younger kids, and they do enjoy hearing about the saga, and gleaning advice for their own future process. I’ve saved several people from some pretty damaging choices, potentially, and they appreciate it a lot. I certainly appreciated it from people who came before me.

And they really will listen for hours and hours about this stuff … that is if they are the type who will be this obsessive about it when their turn comes around.

But I love this group - the news goes both ways!

mamom - Home Depot had a great sale on basic, but new technology washer & dryer. Supposedly great energy savings, less water, blah, blah. They may still be on sale.

Happy64 - I’m doing balloons - big ones, if DS let’s me check email for EA results before he comes home and it’s the news we’re all going crazy waiting for (well, actually, just me going crazy, he seems pretty chill, but I include him to not feel so alone in my unbelievable anticipation).

Good evening all

The best part about that favorite cookie recipe–its its “fool proof” and you can adjust it for your own tastes! Probably one of the best emails I have gotten.

Has anyone else seen the “silent monks” halleluah chorus…thats also a great holiday fav…
[YouTube - Silent Monks Singing Halleluia](<a href=“Silent Monks Singing Halleluia - YouTube”>Silent Monks Singing Halleluia - YouTube)

such clever high school students–Listen to the crowd go wild!

Imagine the Halleluahs from our houses when all of the apps are in and our teens are offically accepted etc…!

madbean - if you dance from the waist up and use lots of facial expressions, apparently it doesn’t hurt at all…but yes, healing quickly so that is good news!

oh man…you mean we could have gone back an added IN the free reports after the scores come out? Or just after testing and before scores?

We didn’t send any scores out until we were certain about apps–and so never used free reports. So I paid for the ACT score reports to be sent (both sittings-- though one sitting was higher than other- they required all testings…)

Thanks, fogfog, for the link. Thoroughly entertaining!

Fog- Loved that link, too funny!

fog, that link made my day! Wait until songbird gets home…she’s gonna die near the middle when they raise up for a couple measures for the sopranos. Awesome, and so funny!

I’ve got you beat, though…I’m the genius who not only didn’t get the free reports…I actually paid to send the same scores to three schools TWICE! Why, you ask?

Because I didn’t remember I’d done it. Hello?

For another great Hallelujah Chorus, try this: [YouTube - Christmas Food Court Flash Mob, Hallelujah Chorus - Must See!](<a href=“Christmas Food Court Flash Mob, Hallelujah Chorus - Must See! - YouTube”>Christmas Food Court Flash Mob, Hallelujah Chorus - Must See! - YouTube).

In case the link goes away, search for “Christmas Court Flash Mob Hallelujah Chorus” from November 2010.

I guess that’s why they have the “History of Sent Scores” link in a hard to find place.

You’re all a chatty bunch today!

D got her first acceptance in the mail! She knew it was coming, because she called this school on Friday to find out if they had received her transcript (it’s not a common app school). And they said, “Oh yeah, you’ve been accepted.” So that’s how she found out, but the official word came in today’s mail. It’s Southern Oregon University, and it’s her academic & financial safety; she probably won’t attend, but it still feels nice to have one in the bag. :)

MOSB - I cannot stop laughing!!! I also sent scores twice for the same reason - I call it my “sometimers”…sometimes I remember and sometimes I don’t!
