missypie, you bet they do! She’s on the cover of a recent viewbook with a quote about how it was one of her IWU profs who convinced her she could make a successful career with her voice, etc.

How cool that your h got to sing with her!!! When was that?

IWU has an amazing music dept, and the fact that they gave D their highest music award on top of highest academic (total $22K) is compelling.

She likes it a lot…still, it’s not the dream school. Sigh…

Hey all you proud parents of U of C admittees: while you’re checking out great deep dish pizza, you should also check out the sandwiches at [grahamwich by graham elliot |](http://grahamwich.com/)

Now I really wish that my kid had considered Chicago area schools…

So much news-- it’s really hard to keep up on this forum! I go in and out of being obsessive about this college business… mostly I’m afraid I’m way too invested in the process, so I make myself disappear for a bit.

D has applied EA to three schools, but two won’t notify for at least another month. The third, Clark, has her pacing in anticipation. Apparently they’re mailing out today, so it will probably take a few days to fly west.

Congrats to all of your kids, and yes, despite feeling too obsessive sometimes, I’m grateful to CC for helping me help my daughter with the research and college tours. She has a short but sweet list of schools, every one of which she can see herself happy at, and none of which are crazy reaches.

Her friends are hearing daily… she needs new now, too!

We have 3 big envelopes on our counter right now … remember, I’m not allowed to peek at all … so I’ll have to let you all know later. Strangely, two are from the same school, which I’m hearing won’t tell her any news until after she’s interviewed and auditioned. But I also learned that theatre kids definitely do their honors program, so that’s very encouraging. Many great specialized depts are in schools with not as selective admissions and not known as much for academics, so this honors program seems like a terrific way to get everything she wants. I was also told that they make their audition decisions pretty quickly, so I don’t think she’ll have to wait until April for that one, either.

So we got news - I’m just not exactly sure what it is. And none of it is final. Right now we’re waiting on 3 non-auditioned rolling/EA answers that will feel like substantial news. But they may take several more weeks, unfortunately.

EmmyBet - you are a saint. I would be at the ready with my steam iron, a hot kettle and a small dog who likes to rip paper that “happens” to fall onto the floor. We had an envelope here (from one he got the online “yes” this past week) and I put it gingerly on his bed where he was napping and then “happened” to slam the door - accidental, really but it did the trick.

Emmy - fingers crossed! We had one school send 3 big envelopes: one with acceptance, second with info on his major and third with financial/merit aid info.

Yeah, well, nobody here should hold their breath … D had a singing audition, and helping with play auditions (one she can’t be in because she’ll be at college auditions when they’re performing it) and THEN will have her last full-costume performance as a Madrigal Singer. She won’t be home until after 8 (Central Time).

And the reason I’m so saintly is that these are both auditioned schools for theatre, academically pretty safe. These envelopes are just one hurdle …

Oh my. Remind me never to miss a few days here. I am exhausted after catching up.

Congrats on all the acceptances. Hugs on the deferrals and the wisdom teeth.

What a great bunch of kids and parents. Special shoutout to RM - three at UofC is just amazing; I wish my D had considered it!
Another shoutout to phbmom. Congrats on the WP nomination. As an Army wife and Navy sister, I have a special place in my heart for academy kids. I think our Ds were in SLS together. Mine did not apply, but did give it serious thought. Your D must be something special - not just academically, but in terms of her willingness to serve (God bless her!), her leadership potential, and her physical gifts. Feel free to PM me if she wants to talk to my husband.

OWM - I think you should consider writing professionally. In just a few words, I feel that I am a part of your family. We are a family of faith as well and I am encouraged by you. We are blessed by things that, at the time, seem like anything but blessings.

My D is feeling much better after the deferral last week. Today, an envelope came from a strong match. I opened it, assuming it was the scholarship stuff (I am serving as administrative asst. until winter break starts). Well, they bumped her from RD to EA and let her in. I am just thrilled for her. Should I try to reconstruct the envelope so she can “open” it, or just explain? Nice to be wanted after the sting of deferral. At least she now has an option out of MN!

I encourage you all to watch the Vikings/Bears tonight. The Metrodome collapsed in our last blizzard, the game got moved to the new UofMN outdoor stadium (which seats 15,000 fewer), and tonight it is snowing (but warm, at least). Should be fun. You will see why D wants to get out of MN for college.

I need to say thank you to this community. You buoyed us last week.

D finally got home and opened her mail. Poor kid, she was so tired she went upstairs without even looking at it.

She got accepted to New Paltz! Very nice - but in order to do her major, she has to audition. Now we can set that up and move forward.

The other mailings were just more information. She’s not going to hear any answers from them until she completes the whole process - audition, honors interview, etc.

Lots of snow here, expecting freezing rain and ice tomorrow. I’m hoping for no school. She definitely needs sleep. But break starts Wednesday regardless.

Congrats to your D, EmmyBet! Hope she gets a snow day tomorrow. We got 3 inches this evening and are in for the freezing rain/wintry mix in the morning as well.

mnmomof2 that’s why my son would want to go to Minnesota if it wasn’t out of his “away from home” range-he loves snow and cold.

Well I checked the SAT II-he went up pretty nicely in Math II but actually went down in Lit by 10 points. His dream school evidentally puts a lot of weight on the SAT II-says it is a better predictor of college success than the SAT regular-where he was extremely strong on the CR and Writing part. Oh well…he is going to be crushed.

I wonder if those apps I mentioned sending out no matter what the scores were will still get sent. This might knock the wind out of his sails.

Emmy-Congrats to your D! Good luck on the audition and honors interview.

MNMom-Congrats to your D! You could try to put the envelope back together and then rub some dirt and stuff on it to disguise the fact it has already been opened. Maybe she won’t notice?

We got about 3-4" of snow yesterday/last night but roads were good this morning. Nightmare going home yesterday, and I leave at 2:30. A 45 minute commute took me 2.5 hours.

Found out yesterday that an EA school that had posted online that decisions had been made about 10 days ago and everyone should get the decision via snail mail within 5 days was incorrect. Admissions at that school said it was a mistake. Well, how about posting that online in stead of keeping us in suspense. I will have to set that bottle of sparkling cider aside til after xmas.

Pepper-10 points isn’t a lot, I know you would rather see 10 in the other direction though. Does the school take highest score? In any case, I would be surprised if those 10 points make or break an app. Your S will end up in at a great school.

So ds had to take SATIIs for just one school, which he hasn’t finished the app for and math was great but chem (ahem, ((cough cough ))590) not so great which isn’t surprising since he did no prep (even though the books were sitting there in his room dangnabit). Soooooo, really big question is whether to bother with the Cornell app. Does anyone have an opinion? Guess I will give the GC a call to get his read as well but I need more voices in my head.

Ten points down when he needed to go UP a 100 points is a problem!
My understanding of the subject tests-and I have written before we were late to understand the right timing of them and the preparation-is that the Ivy schools need to have 7’s before them-preferably 750+. How accurate that is I don’t know-but I do know even though the Math has a 7 the Lit is a 6 and they aren’t good enough for those kinds of schools.

I feel like I failed the kid with this-but I can’t go down that road again. I wrote earlier that my D will benefit from what I have learned with S.

The thing is too I don’t think they are good enough to send anywhere for scholarship bumps. I don’t know how to explain how a kid who is a gifted writer and has always tested high all through school and the SAT could not do better on this test. I don’t care if schools think this is an accurate predictor of college performance-I don’t have to accept that and I am not going to.

I showed him the results and he said “I guess I should have listened to you and tried them last June and gotten better prep materials.” He muttered something about Lit that I can’t repeat-and then asked me to proofread his new essay to one of the reach schools.

He’s down but he told me it will be fun once he is published to use the scores and college rejections as bookmarks-while making a big donation with the royalties to the college he does go to!

I wouldn’t bet against this kid. I now know that I do take this much harder than he does.

Well judging by my S he is going through with the apps. He told me if he doesn’t get in because of one test he doesn’t get in but he doesn’t want to look back and have any regrets.

My advice-coming from about the same situation-is if your S has a strong application everywhere else and just has this speed bump like my S does go ahead and let him apply if he wants. Who knows how they weight these anyway-as the ED/EA threads have shown some kids with 800’s haven’t gotten in and kids with much lower scores have.
