<p>I am normally a pretty calm, we-can-work-it-out kind of person. But today, I think I’m starting to have an anxiety attack about the whole MIT vs. Mizzou situation.</p>
<p>All the pre-registration and housing information has arrived from Mizzou. Priority registration deadline is March 22. Even though we will have a yes or no from MIT by then, if it’s yes, we won’t have FA answers. In my heart and brain, I can’t imagine that MIT can make itself affordable for us, yet we had to give it a try.</p>
<p>Meanwhile, our son’s best friend is moving ahead as though they are going to room together in the Honors College living group at Mizzou, while my son is tweeting about Megabus connections between Missouri and Boston.</p>
<p>I’m a stress eater so I made a PBJ sandwich on fresh white bread today as comfort food. But if I do that every day between now and April 1, I will gain back the 30 pounds I’ve lost in the last year.</p>

<p>While D loves her chosen school, I can tell that lots of folks are less than impressed. But we went with the “school you love that will give you enough merit aid that we can afford it” method.</p>

<p>OWM, hang in there! For emotional well-being, you may want to consider that Mizzou is the school. If MIT says yes, perhaps you can call their FA office and explain your other 3/22 deadline and request expedited notice if possible.</p>
<p>The good news is–once a kid is admitted, the entire university seems to go into overdrive to get them to say yes. With that in mind, you may be able to get some help with needed cost info.</p>
<p>To other earlier posts, all I can add is that I fully expect within the next 10 years we’ll see neuroscientists proving that our present theories about intelligence are woefully simplistic. These “disorders” are probably relative distinctions. Like people who are great musicians but who are not particularly great painters aren’t told they have an “art disorder.” But with the way our group education works, anyone with slower (relative to other strengths) processing is treated as if they have a problem. And a lifetime of harsh feedback can be a trial. My hugs to all kids who are on this path!! Finding the best way to work around some of these things is not really an accommodation (that word seems to imply a whole lot) more than it is a very normal process of finding each individual’s best learning climate. Sigh!!!</p>

<p>Wow, no! I was not even aware of the charges, which I guess were from a few years ago. I would like to believe that he was innocent (which, if he was, certainly makes his death more tragic). Either way, his books were very helpful in regards to understanding learning disabilities.</p>

<p>Latest reflection from S2–he does not think we should plan any trips to revisit schools at this point. Well, I was just about to book our Pittsburgh trip so good to know. </p>
<p>He has extraordinarily good visual recall (as opposed to me–I notice just about nothing) and now feels he might “jinx” his first good impressions if he revisits. Instead, he’d like to wait and see what his final list of acceptances may be, compare costs, determine his realistic choices and <em>then</em> visit any if needed.</p>
<p>Don’t know if this is avoidance, confidence, exhaustion on his part at this point in our very long process, or all of the above. But this is undeniably a cost-saving plan, so I’m putting the temporary brakes on travel plans.</p>

<p>Yes. D begged me last week not to go on a school visit trip over spring break. When I said of course, she said a huge weight was lifted from her shoulders.</p>
<p>This isn’t even to re-visit; she has never been on campus (although has some familiarity with) one of her safeties, and one of her reaches. I’m figuring that if either of these schools really becomes a contender, we’ll deal with getting her out there. Luckily they are pretty close to each other and to my family, and I could fly her out and ask them to take her to visit.</p>
<p>I completely understand that she’s sick of traveling and having everything focused on college. And I agree with madbean’s S that too much information can just louse things up sometimes. To be honest, I’m THRILLED we’re now not making a crazy drive to Massachusetts in the 6 days we have during break (after her choir’s long weekend trip).</p>
<p>OWM - Can’t you send in your paperwork to Mizzou and then get a refund if MIT comes through? It’s not double-depositing; it’s sequential depositing. Even if you lose some portion, it seems worth the peace of mind to me.</p>

<p>Yes, I did apply there. I had found the date to be Pi Day on a couple websites, but several others had dates ranging from March 20-24. All my friends who attend MIT were admitted early, so they couldn’t tell me very much about it. </p>

<p>OWM - I understand how you feel. D has received acceptance from her top three (yeah!) but is now confused on where she wants to go. All three options are very differenet from each other. It is driving me crazy!</p>
<p>madbean/Emmybet - D has also told me she doesn’t want to visit her top three AFTER I made travel plans and flights…uughh! But I am insisting that we go and at the end of the trip that she pick one and be done with it.</p>

<p>I was desperately trying to find a date to go revisit one of D’s top two choices. So hard…she doesn’t want to miss any classes (AP CHEM!!) and has rehearsals every Saturday and was warned by the director that she can’t miss any other Saturday rehearsals (because she already had to miss two of them). OY!!! D wants to revisit in order to make an informed decision. Finally noticed that there is a superintendent’s day later this month, so even though she has a rehearsal in the evening, the school is only 2 1/2 hours away, so it is doable!! PHEW!!!

<p>I was thinking about us going to where S has deposited over his 2 week spring break as they have honors college days and fraternity preview, but the flights are expensive and it is probably overkill at this point. <p>madbean - my D doesn’t want to visit/revisit her accepted schools as yet. She didn’t come outright and say it - but she has not confirmed a date for me at all. Very frustrating, but at this point, I figure she doesn’t want to look until all decisions are in. Going to make for a tough April and she will very likely have to miss games - I’ve told her all that, but I think she’s just too stressed out and wants a break. A moratorium on college talk at home would be good - if I can enforce it! H keeps pushing her and I think I am ready to crack under the stress!!</p>
<p>Ugh - thanks to some medications I am on, can’t even do margaritas! Would love one right now! Apparently, I can’t do drugs either - had to take some narcotics this past week and broke out into a rash due to that :)</p>
<p>For alikarim7: The MIT admissions blog and the CC page are pretty much in agreement that MIT will announce the date of the decision about one week prior. That has been their standard procedure in year’s past. I believe last year, they announced on March 9 that decisions would be posted on March 14.</p>
<p>So, keep checking back to both places and your e-mail. I’m sure all the applicants will get a notice soon. MIT has been very applicant friendly and up front in all our dealings with them for the past year. No reason to believe the final chapter will not be the same.</p>

<p>At our school, they are still required to attend class. The AP classes have final projects post-exam. But it’s not too strenuous, fortunately.</p>
