Parents of the HS Class of 2011 - We're awesome!

Whoo- hoo!

Congratulations to AvonSon! Awesome news. D graduates on May 17th (that day is going to be special - it is H and S’s birthday too!). We are trying to figure out how to get S from his school to Cleveland for her graduation. She told me that she officially signed up for graduation yesterday!

Congrats to Avon son! I just can’t believe that these kids are graduating this year. This was the fastest 4 yrs of my life, lol.
My son has decided to take a year or two off to work in a neuro lab before applying to grad school for a PhD. Many of the labs want a two-year commitment. He had lab job interviews last week at Cornell med school and Rockefeller with HR. Both told him that they now go back to see if there is a lab fit for him. And then on Monday he had an interview at a lab at Columbia and was offered a job. He was given some time to decide. We’ll see what happens.

Thanks for the positive comments and congrats for AvonSon. We figured it would get more complicated in the weeks to come and surprisingly, much sooner than expected, it did today. S called late this afternoon and could hardly contain his enthusuasm. He reported that he got an acceptance letter to Georgetown Law. He only submitted his app a couple of weeks ago and was surprised at how quickly he heard back. He said there was a handwritten note from the Director of LS Admissions on his formal acceptance letter that commented on his supplemental essay. S attended an info session back in November and met the LS Admissions Director during the session. Following a one-on-one discussion with him he sent a follow-up thank you note and expressed his interest in the program. It obviously worked to the point where the Director recognized his name. He won’t know about FA for a couple of months and it appears the decision date for law schools is mid-April.

He too, is officially signed up for graduation. His degree audit is completed and he just needs to complete and pass all of his current classes including his major thesis. It will be a busy and fast final semester as graduation is just 4 months from this weekend.

Wow, Avondad…great news!

Great news as well Renaissancemom. ShawD is taking her nursing licensure exams today. It is a 6 hour exam for which she is extremely well prepared. Then a little break and back to classes to become a nurse practitioner. Plus she now needs to find a very part-time job as a nurse as part of the requirements for her program.

Well, the 6 hour exam is one of those exams where you sit at a terminal and answer questions until you get the requisite number of questions (75) right. Well she called to tell me less than an hour after she started, she was dismissed after 75 questions, which means she either got them all right or all wrong. The latter is a lot more likely. Now she is waiting for her friends.

Thanks @shawbridge‌. Good luck to your daughter. Hope she hears good news about her exam results.

She has passed.

That’s great news. Congratulations to ShawD!

D is taking the MCAT on Friday in NOLA, then running the NOLA Mardi Gras marathon on Sunday. This is her first MCAT (hopefully only) and her second marathon. I am hoping that the training for the marathon is more of a stress reliever than a distraction for the MCAT.

best of luck on both the MCATs and the marathon.

Yay! Congrats to shawdaughter! With her grades, I was assuming she passed. Good luck to bajamm daughter. Love hearing all this good news.

Congrats to AvonS and ShawD. Good luck to BajammD on the MCATs and the race. I love hearing all the good news also.

Congratulations to everyone - there is quite a bit of good news here. D is also on a five year track taking the 3 coop route like Pepper’s son. Co-op has proved to be very enlightening for her…she loved her first one and hated the second one… So now she knows what she doesn’t like! D spent 5 months in Rome on a study abroad and she will begin looking for her third coop next week - time flies!

I have gotten out of the habit of having brunch food out for y’all on Saturday mornings. Let’s do it again for old time’s sake! I have muffins, fresh fruit, bagels, turkey bacon, eggs, coffee, and tea out. Come on over!

D called me after she finished the MCAT yesterday. She is trying hard to not be anxious while waiting a month for the scores. She said she over studied things that weren’t asked on the test and didn’t study enough some things that were asked. My thought is, isn’t that why very few people get over a 40 (or even 35) when the perfect score is 45? So, she is likely normal. Now, on to running a marathon tomorrow!

Thanks for the brunch bajamm! Since it’s virtual can we add some crispy hash browns?

Something that occurred to me as I read the good news about our group of kiddos, we haven’t been hearing too much from our members who have kids that are not doing so well. I’m sure we all know IRL kids who graduated HS with ours and who started college at the same time that are not graduating, who maybe dropped out, switched schools, etc. I’d like to acknowledge those people too and give some encouragement.

I was talking via PM on facebook to another parent that I met through this site and whose son graduated HS the same time as my older son - that was in 2006. This young man started college and then had to leave after a year. If I remember right, he just wasn’t settling well in college and his merit money was dependent on good grades. He went back home and got a job at a big box store. After a year or so he went back to a nearby state college and worked part time. He’s graduating this Spring with a degree in finance and will be able to sit for the CPA test soon due to his part time job, in his major.

Another RL friend whose son went to HS with my youngest started college at his parents alma mater. They were very excited and happy for him. After two years and a little too much fun he was asked to leave, and he picked up a DUI too. He went home and got a job but the DUI really limited where he could work since we live in an area without public transportation and he became frustrated with his job. Meanwhile an older friend of his got a job in Southern California and invited him to move there where he could use public transportation and bike to a job. He did and found a couple of part time jobs that he liked and would pay his bills. For Christmas all he wanted from his parents was a plane ticket to come home for a visit. His is a story in progress.

So, while I am so very grateful that my son, and all of the ones that have jobs lined up, grad school, co-ops, etc those who aren’t taking a straight path have not failed, they’re just taking a different one, eh?

@WALKINGHOME of course we can have hash browns.

And, you are exactly right on the different paths. I have a younger 1st cousin who is still in his late 20’s. He started at the state flagship right out of high school, partied too much, lost his driver’s license, drove anyway, got caught again, his grades went down and so was asked to leave the school.

He took some time off, worked full time in the university town, stayed in touch with the school, and was allowed back. He eventually went back, made dean’s list every semester after returning, and graduated with a philosophy degree.

He is now travelling the world as a juggler and sword swallower. I think he is currently in Australia. He has spent time performing in Scotland, France, Germany, Australia, India, among other places. He has had two different stints with the national circus in India.

So, sometimes the crooked paths are a lot more interesting.

My brother has three of those kids. Two of them actually did get college degrees, but have been itinerant since and not using the degrees at all. Oldest D has somewhat settled into web design after being an English major. In the meantime she got married at 20, divorced at 25, spent a year following a rock band around the country, broke an arm hang gliding, and is now a Roller Derby queen. The second S got an Honors degree in biomedical engineering (!!) in three years (!!!) and is traveling around the world doing seasonal manual labor jobs - he returns next week from a job in Antarctica! The youngest S never went to college, barely finished high school, did two stints in drug rehab, and is now one of the top up-and-coming young chefs in Denver, completely self-taught. He will probably have the best career and make the most money of the three. Go figure!

@bajamm‌
We were In NO this weekend. The marathon went down St Charles Ave ( and back up again) in front of our hotel. We stood outside and watched for a while. I thought of your d. I hope it went well. It was a beautiful morning.
