We got our DD a nice suit.
Dd finally decided on her graduate school. Now 5 more years of college to earn a phd. It was a tougher decision than her undergrad decision 4 years ago. At least we don’t have to pay this time and she will be earning a stipend. We are hoping we don’t have to spend much the next 5 years. We have twins that are in middle school that need to go to college too.
She has been off since Dec, since she graduated early(May graduation ceremony). I gave her a 11 day Hawaii trip for graduation/birthday back in January. She has yet to get a job but has an interview this week.
We promised a new computer for graduate school, and that will be the gift at graduation.
Congrats to momof3greatgirls and daughter.
My D will have free corporate housing, free meals, and free transportation (corporate van) for the first 3 months. This will help her to save money for apartment deposit.
Just checking in and it is nice to see some familiar names. 4 years ago D was on the SS Indecision captained by our beloved AvonHSDad. Tomorrow at 3 EDT she will ring Hampshire’s Div Free Bell and so recognize completion of her undergrad years (she is not interested in attending graduation). It was a long and wild ride (developing asthma from the mold in her dorm room- subsequent incompletes- an on campus stalker) but she has handled it all with aplomb. As might be expected from someone who chose Hampshire, she carved her own path (studying hunting at a college like Hampshire?) and developed skills and a deep knowledge base around Sustainable Ag, Ecology, and Equine Studies. We have been delighted to watch her find her way and hope your students have also had a remarkable time. She hopes start an MSIS (Library) program this fall, and then who knows?
ha ha! It’s good to see your update, @kinderny. I’m happy that your student stayed as quirky and individual as she was in high school. Hunting at Hampshire, indeed.
@kinderny - Good to hear the update on your DD. It turns out our DS was on this year’s SS Indecision and just disembarked on Thursday. He has been back and forth with three law schools and made his decision based on a final acceptance into a dual degree program and some additional negotiated FA. He still has one waitlisted school he really likes but it looks doubtful that he will get in and if they would match or beat the scholarship and FA package he has in hand. In three weeks he will graduate and will give up his Georgetown Hoyas basketball shirts as he will be a 1L student at Duke University law school in August. Looks like there will be some Blue Devils t-shirts in his future. Following graduation we will be packing up his off campus housing furniture and moving everything to a storage facility in Durham. We will also take a day or two to go apartment shopping while in town. Then its home for the summer as he will be a law clerk again this summer at the same firm he has worked the past two years. This year he will get to work with a Legislative Action Committee that the firm is involved with. He is really looking forward to his summer activities. Based on the law school programs and summer internships it is quite likely his last summer at home.
@kinderny - Good to hear from you after so long! Congrats to your D and best wishes to her going forward! Was in your neck of the woods just the other day (had lunch in Hillsdale) and thought about you as I was driving down (took the scenic route.)
I just moved my d’11 home, and I’m feeling my age. It’s three weeks to graduation, but the lease was up. She landed her first choice job–nurse residency position at the university hospital. She’ll spend the summer at home prepping for boards and taking O-chem and start in the fall. I’ve asked her to take a semester to get used to working before she starts taking classes again. She has decided she would like to be a physician. We had a long ride, too. D picked the college she did because she wanted kind of an odd major, one offered at ONE state school and three very small privates, including my employer. I remember posting here that I was jealous of those of you getting the long ride to college so you could just talk! She changed her mind about that major first semester, caught up with the prereqs for nursing and then, last summer, decided that she wanted to “call the codes.” Hey, at least she can save a little money between now and med school, right? We also had the joy the learning way more about mental illness and the mental health care system than we ever wanted to. (hard to diagnose, might take years to reach the right answer, and treatment that might best be compared to the old math staple “guess and check”–we just do not know a lot).
It seems surreal.
Congrats to AvonHSDad’s S, kinderny’s D, and ordinarylives D.
@kinderny @ordinarylives - congratulations to your daughters. Not all roads/paths are the same and these kids are living proof of that. It’s great to hear updates about the old group!
D texted me yesterday that it was her last class!! She has some tests/exams and then senior week begins next Thursday. It’s partying for one whole week - barbecue, movie night, wine tasting, amusement park, baseball game, cruise and what not…
After seeing the video last night of heavy winds blowing a train off a bridge track in NOLA, I texted D to see if she was OK. She was fine. She said that all schools in NOLA cancelled classes yesterday, except for Tulane. She had to go to the library in the worst of the weather (almost tornado, not quite) and work with a group on a final group project. The librarians refused to let them leave until the weather cleared.
Counting down the days till graduation on Friday. D is working on her last paper and then she is done. Her Masters thesis has been defended and revisions signed off.
She is flying up to NY in the morning for 36 hrs of apartment hunting.
Wow, how did this happen?
D1 has her last day of classes tomorrow, and graduation is a week from Saturday. D2 is graduating from high school in June. D2 has been dancing for 14 years, and her final recital is the same day as D1’s graduation. Luckily, the graduation is in the early afternoon, and the recital is in the evening, so we will be able to attend both, even though it will be a very hectic day. D2 will not be able to attend D1’s graduation, since she also has a recital in the afternoon. There is a special awards ceremony for the graduates in D1s major tomorrow night, so D2 will come to that event with us The girls agreed to have a combination graduation party, which saves our out of town guests from making two trips, and saving us some money in the long run.
When I graduated from college back in the stone ages, my parents bought me a strand of pearls. D1 mentioned a few times that she would like some pearls, so we will be getting her a strand, and giving her money towards a down payment on a car.
My d2 is graduating HS too! May 21.
When D1 was in hs and discussing college my husband promised D1 a rolex watch when she graduated college. A few adult beverages had been consumed. I guess they will be shopping in the next few weeks ;
@Sally22 - congratulations on the graduation tomorrow!! Is this the first one for this cycle?
One week until graduation! My daughter still has one paper to write and a final to take on Monday. She can’t wait to be done. She has a job lined up and has already started working there part time and loves it. She is really looking forward to working full time, making money and being an adult. She is working for the company that will be producing the first ever Broadway Con next January. They also run Harry Potter conventions, so she is working with people who love Broadway AND Harry Potter, her two favorite things! She rented a room in a brownstone in Brooklyn. It’s not really a bedroom, more like they made a bedroom out of the dining room and closed it off from the living room and kitchen. I’m concerned about privacy but she says it’s screened off and private. Only one flight up, other places she looked at were 4th or 5th floor walkups! She’s excited to move in and get on with the next phase of her life.
Congrats to everyone!!
I realized tonight that 3 other colleges in the same city as D1s school will also be having commencement ceremonies next Saturday. All 3 of the schools have their ceremony at 10, and D1s will be at 11. It will be interesting to see how the city handles the traffic. I assumed that the schools would have coordinated commencement. I had heard that pretty much all of the hotel rooms were taken in the area. I am glad that we live only 40 miles away, and do not need a hotel room.
@LeftyLou - How much is the apartment rent? My D will work in NYC too.
My DD is graduating in a couple of weeks too…with her Masters! (she graduated with her BS early). She is going to be a Math teacher and her current plan is to look for jobs in New York City. I hooked her up for the summer with an apt. in Brooklyn (one of my friends owns a duplex) and he is doing her a favor and letting her have it for the summer at below market rent…I am wondering what the future will bring! Can’t wait until she has her own official apt and I can get all of her clothes out of her room at our house!
Congrats to all our graduates! My D graduates next week. She’ll be home this summer and starts an international internship in the fall. Best of luck to all our HS2011 kids as they move ahead.
