<p>I would text. I usually start those type of texts with-“Just checking, did …”</p>
<p>Interestingly, of all the misc. things for my son to record, he knew that freshman were given an extending deadline on those decisions for the first semester.</p>
<p>I would just text to say you were curious as to what her decision was regarding PE, mihcal, and to say hi!</p>
<p>mihcal - sometimes I just call to say hello, and the task I’m wondering about comes up in conversation. Just, “so, what did you decide to do about the PE class?”</p>
<p>OK - I’m getting my Helen Reddy on tonight. In the space of 40 minutes, I picked up a kid from rehearsal, submitted a grant proposal, went to the grocery store, made a hodge podge Mexican chicken casserole, signed a petition about an issue I care about, hounded the furnace guy, and now I get to grab my bari sax and go rock out for the evening. <p>S is finishing up the packing to head back to Evanston tomorrow. He is in an apartment this year and excited to get back and promote the magazine he edits on campus at the activites fair on Sunday. </p>
<p>I have been surprisingly ok since D left a month ago, but we’ve been so busy and she texts so often I haven’t had time to miss her. Now that S will finally be gone too I’m feeling a little weepy. S2 just started high school so there will be much attention to shower on him now. I just think I delayed my tears over D until they were both gone. </p>
<p>But, tomorrow will be fun- H and I will take S to move the final load of stuff into his apartment, say goodbye, then wander around the area on our own. I have really grown to love NU’s campus since S began school there 2 years ago.</p>
<p>Is anyone else running into scheduling problems? I promised D we would come for family weekend - the 29th - and just found out that the high school homecoming is the same weekend. S2 was not tuned into the goings-on at school yet, (and I thought it was usually in October) but was disappointed when he realized we’ll be gone that weekend. Ugh. This is like move in day all over again (when S1 stayed home to see S2 off to high school the exact same time as H and I were moving D into her dorm 6 hours away).</p>
<p>Tomorrow is D2 school’s homecoming. She is invited to a formal at a fraternity. I am not sure what she has in school for formal wear. Our things just arrived a week before she left for school. D1 is going up tomorrow, so I am sure they will be hanging out at few parties.</p>
<p>Thanks NN1, Lakemom, momsings, and PN! I texted and asked her to call me when she had a moment, which she did. She told me that she has changed the PE class to P/F. </p>
<p>She also said that the math midterm was hard (as the Prof warned it would be), she’s disgruntled with her Chem TA, she has a rough draft due for tomorrow’s humanities class, and there’s a CS midterm on Monday. I think she’s in that first dip of the freshman-adjustment curve. Right on schedule!</p>

<p>We are officially launched. Classes start on Monday, registration for classes is allowed starting tomorrow. Lots of events happening during orientation of 4 days plus but they kicked out parents at the end of the day on Tuesday. I am sticking around thru saturday to see if I am needed for additional shopping although Wife left yesterday.<br>
The big thing here seems to be the bikes. We spent all of monday shopping for one. Then they have a registration process to prevent thefts etc.</p>
<p>texaspg, what dorm is your D in at Stanford? My S is in Adams House at Frosoco and it would be nice if he had a bike since it’s kind of far from the main part of campus. Unfortunately, however, he never really learned to ride one, although not for lack of trying when he was around 7. He was just never very interested. Maybe after having to walk everywhere for several weeks, he’ll be more motivated, lol!</p>
<p>Congratulations to those who launched recently!</p>
<p>It is almost 4 weeks since S launched. He has made a LOT of close friends and loves his school. We don 't know how the academics are going…too early to tell. He has gone out and done so many interesting things- we hope he is finding time to study!</p>
<p>We have figured out he doesn’t communicate well on the phone. He is fine in person or by text. So I’m so grateful that he is nearby and we can see him once in awhile. I saw him last weekend and he was good…mellow, peaceful, maybe a bit humbled by the talent at his school. </p>
<p>Attending a nearby school was not really a criteria for him, it just worked out that way and I am grateful for it. Also I would like to thank the girls on his dorm floor for posting facebook pictures including him. Lol, it is fun to see that peek into his world.</p>
<p>S is moved in and seems really happy and ready to go here at NU. It’s hard to feel sad when he looks so happy. I’m sure I’ll manage to squeeze out a few tears tomorrow ;). </p>
<p>No crazy parent stories as of yet, his roommate seems nice as were his parents. We’re beng kept very separate from our kids from here on out. We’ll have a chance to take him out to dinner and then it is “kiss and bye” time. (Their words not ours). </p>

<p>mom2jl - from what i have seen on campus, it may be best if he started learning biking. D went to relearn at a friend’s home but she is quite rusty. hopefully she does not feel shy about falling a few times in order to get better at it. it will take too much time to walk so much.</p>

<p>mom2jl: If he doesn’t know how to ride a bike, how about a razor scooter or a skateboard? My oldest went to a different CA college and those were popular there. She had fold up scooter that she could just take into class with her and not worry about theft.</p>

<p>Thank you for the details. Has your kid already taken AP Latin exam in high school? Does the language requirement still need 4 semesters “after” the successful completion of AP Latin exam?</p>
<p>Basically, how are the dorm/dining facilities? how safe is the campus? Do the students need to buy the textbooks or are they all provided? Are the students allowed to have a land line in addition to the mobile? Does it get very hot or should fans be provided?
How is the workload - do the kids have enough time to relax and visit friends during the weekends as such? Are Fridays normally free for them?</p>
<p>Can’t believe we have just one more day of launchers and then everybodys in!! Woo-hoo!!</p>
<p>Did my FB stalking (since S won’t friend me but keeps his privacy setting very low). Seems that he “bombed” his first mid-term. I know how he gets and before all of the “stress” and discouragement came out on/to me. I am really hoping that he will get the support he needs from all of the sources he has there unlike HS. He has friends there that were friends before he went, new friends, roomies, classmates, TA’s professors, tutors, study groups, etc…</p>
<p>He beats himself up about these things. I am not saying he will need therapy because he failed a mid-term, but I am hoping he will realize that he probably not the only one and has a ton of resources available to him so that maybe next time he is better prepared.</p>
<p>And of course he hasn’t told me yet that it did not go well. We will see when that happens. Here is wishing him better luck on the one on Monday. This would be a great weekend to study, study, study!!!</p>
<p>Parent & Family Weekend is next weekend. I hope there will be good mid-term news for all of the parents and not sad college kid faces…</p>
<p>Are we missing launches for Chicago? I know Mutti’s kid (I know a few who got in but dont remember if anyone else is joining) should be on that list. I remember October 1st as launch but could be wrong.</p>
<p>texas - I don’t add anyone to the list unless they ask, just in case someone isn’t comfortable being on the list. We’re all straddling that anonymous/open information line however we want, so I’ve just never made the decision for anyone else about whether they want to be on the list or not. </p>
