<p>Hello, again. Back from our launch. Thank you, Gwen Fairfax, Creekland, and WordWorld, for the warm welcome. And welcome to fellow newbie Baliblue.
I agree with Mutti2012 and fredricksdottir that the UChicago check-in and program was smooth sailing. Our D’s roomie was already in the room when we arrived. It seems to be a good pairing. Lovely young lady with equally lovely parents. In fact, all of the families that we met over the two days were very nice. We enjoyed some great conversations over lunch and at various receptions. People from so many different places! It looks to be a wonderful learning experience for everyone both inside and outside of the classroom.</p>
<p>DS1 seems to be doing well, with one maybe slip up. He texted me a pic of his anthro test (his favoriet class so far); a 96%. Yeah!! Class average was a low B, he thinks. However, he says he did not do well on his first Chem test. 
Doesn’t have the grade back and it will be curved, so there is a chance he did ok. He was studying hard for Calc and Marine Science, maybe to balance his first semester average? I think he just learned that college is different than high school and you really do have to study a bit every day in order to learn the material to the degree they expect. Otherwise, he LOVES the school and seems to be finding his place. Hopefully the chem test isn’t a complete bomb. He did take AP chem in HS and this was suppose to be a bit of a review. :(</p>

<p>I’m also in the same camp as seiclan, amtc, and momsings with not much contact from son. But this morning I decided to not take it personally b/c S2 didn’t divulge much when he was home. So far I do know he likes his dorm and he gets along okay with his roommate but I don’t think they really hang together which is fine. He also joined a club sport so that’s cool, too! Just happy he’s working things out :)</p>
<p>Since we went to visit DS on Sunday for his b-day, I haven’t heard from him since. I have been searching the college website for any sign of him since it is homecoming week. If he can survive this week all should be fine. We noticed such a positive change in him on our trip, so much more mature already. It was also really nice to meet his new friends and to see how he has been accepted within his fraternity. He is not the guy he was in hs (though they got a huge kick out of the idea that he was Homecoming King). it really hit me that I will never really know his friends like I did in HS.</p>
<p>My S has been gone for about a week and I am really missing him! I’m in the same camp as those of you with sons who don’t communicate much. We have texted a little, but I’m the one initiating the conversations most of the time. I’m really trying so hard not to text or email him, but it’s really difficult. At least he called this past weekend and it was good to hear his voice, but I really yearn for details, which I know won’t be forthcoming. All I know is that he’s already feeling stressed out with classes having started as of yesterday, so of course that just makes me worry about him. He was a very anxious kid in HS, but I was always here to talk to him and try to calm him down–I’m hoping he’ll be able to manage OK without me…</p>
<p>Hi everyone! Welcome to the new faces - thanks for joining us!</p>
<p>Not much is new here. I’ve talked to S a little, but no real scoop. Classes seem to be going fine. I think that in most of his classes, while they have homework, the bulk of the grade is from a couple midterms and a final. I think he has his first test coming up in the next week or two. I sent both S1 and S2 a link to the form for an absentee ballot in our state. </p>
<p>It sounds like most are settling in - students and parents alike. Sorry for the roommate hassles. I think S is in the “get along fine but not best friends” category. They come home in less than two weeks for fall break, and then I’m heading out the weekend afterwards for parents/alumni weekend. Also known as “take your kid out for something better than dorm food” weekend. H is still undecided about whether or not he’s going. </p>
<p>In the meantime, I’m making a huge batch of chili for theater kids at S3’s HS. They have rehearsals after school and a performance for a different show in the evening, so parents are bringing food in. Unfortunately I was really low on chili powder, so it’s going to be kind of lame chili…</p>

<p>Not yet in “coasting” mode, as D has pretty bad cold, a challenging schedule, including work, violin lessons, and orchestra rehearsals; and she just bombed a test (she thinks) for probably the first time in her life. But she’s made friends, and the roommate situation is good. Not worried, just hate to know she’s stressed.</p>

<p>Pinot … you’re so funny. I’m moving on to a Sauvignon Blanc. And to think, our kids are probably samping Coors Lite this weekend. (ha ha, just kidding).</p>
<p>notakid … I’m sure your D is harder on herself than she needs to be. She sounds very talented with a great support system. I’m sure she’ll work it out!</p>
