Parents of the HS Class of 2012 - New beginnings

I think not, it is a new class being offered. He got into another choice, also only a 15 student cap, luckily because you had to get instructor permission before registering. I encouraged him to email to get that so he had that as a back up.

S will be scheduling his Spring semester classes this tuesday. I’m excited to see how it turns out for him.

His plan is Chem II, Biology, English, Italian.

That will put him at 16 credit hours which is where he is this semester. Fingers crossed he can get some decent times. This is his first time scheduling on his own. The first time, the advisor did it right there in her office. He had a major change during orientation (immediately changed back to what it was the 2nd day of orientation) and has changed his major again a couple of weeks ago.

Well we had a nostalgia weekend around here. It was the equivalent of homecoming at DD’s HS. Since she was a day student at a BS our house was often the weekend slumber party away from campus for her band of friends. A bunch came back for the weekend so we once again had sleeping teenagers scattered all over the house Saturday AM.

They are at different highly selective Unis and LACs. They all seem pretty happy. DD and one of her friends who is at Brown are extremely happy, I think because their temperments are so well matched to their respective schools. Some have had disappointments about not getting drama parts or into music groups. Some have great roommates - others not so much. Because these are BS kids there were no time management or homesickness issues, but they say some of their classmates are homesick for their old HS!

My D is far more talkative when she initiates the call. She called yesterday to talk about possible summer internships and a 10 week online writing workshop she wants to take over the summer. She offered to pay half for the 10 week course and it is only $100. I told her I could handle the full price of that…lol.

We talked about the details of her trip home for Thanksgiving  10 days! It feels like she has been gone forever (August 26th was move in). We worked out her schedule while she’s home (splitting time between divorced parents, friends, boyfriend) and when the big sleepover would be. I cannot WAIT for the sleepover when I get to have all those girls over laughing and giggling all night! She decided to take the bus to the airport to save taxi fare and was planning what time she would need to leave.

She added a few things to her Christmas list too: a blazer and black pumps. She is finally realizing that her definition of business attire isn’t really business attire.

Her grades have improved and she will probably have around a 3.5 from the looks of it. I had told her, when she left, to strive for a 3.0, so she’s pretty pleased right now. Early in the term, she was worried about passing two of her classes, but she is doing much better in those two now.

She has her classes for next term selected. She got into a highly desired Psych Lab that most freshman don’t get into so she is happy. She is VERY excited about her courses next term:
Psych Lab/Intro to Psych
Spanish
1st year English- Women & Culture
American Politics
Women’s Studies

She has been having difficulty deciding on a major and has considered Women’s Studies, English, Poly Sci and Psych so having them all in one term, she believes she’ll be able to narrow it down after next term. She’s also considering a more general Communications major.

I told her I’d look into the internship opportunities at my company because they usually have some in marketing/PR/Communications and she wants something creative. I told her I’d also check with a friend of ours in Advertising and see if his firm offers summer internships.

That was the longest chat we’d had in a while, about more important things. She also had a great time with the Columbia University Democrats on their campaign trip. They were proud that the county they canvassed went 70% Obama.

Barnard hasn’t released their finals schedule yet. She only has one final. If they follow the same schedule as Columbia, it will be on the very last day of finals. Ugh! She will have 10 days with no classes and no tests. If her final was the first day of finals, she would be home an extra week. Go figure!

TEN DAYS!!!

Hope this finds all of you well. I am sure you are all doing the Thanksgiving countdown with me. I know I can’t wait for D to be home for 3 days!

She got her time to do online class scheduling for next semester. 5:30 A.M. on the Friday after Thanksgiving break… She has already asked to borrow my wind up travel alarm for an extra.

We get DS for an entire week for Thanksgiving and he will be able to come home on 12/11 due to great luck with finals. At Wabash all scheduling is done by hand and students are assigned line times based on last name. He will be in the last group so is willing to take any distribution requirement so long as he gets his chemistry class.

Had a short conversation with him…this weekend at college is the biggest football game of the year and the campus was overrun with alums. He is looking forward to the break to catch up on sleep.

Wish DD could make it home for Thanksgiving, but it is just too much money for too little time :(

Is there a BINGO for a 2 am call from the ER? Last night, S took a header off his longboard and went flying. He had just donated blood for the first time (24 hour blood drive, presumably for Veteran’s Day) and was unaware that it might make him a little dizzy. Because he was disoriented and banged up, it was advised that he go to the ER. He is still under 18, so they called us to confirm it was OK to treat him. He has a black eye and a sling for a strained shoulder but all other tests showed he was not badly injured. It is SO HARD to be so far away, what was I thinking having him so far away? There are no direct flights and the fastest I could get to him even under ideal conditions is about 6 hours flying or two days driving.
Eight days and counting for Thanksgiving, so that is good at least. I am so glad I bought his ticket when I did, it has doubled in price and more.

That must have been scary WW.

Nothing good happens at 2am. When my kids call me too early or too late I know it is nothing good.

Glad to hear he is ok.

Yikes Wordworld! Glad he’s basically OK! It must be very difficult to be so far :(

1.) Not 18 yet?! I’m impressed
2.) Thinking of my 15 yo boy (going on 12) :frowning: and thinking; “no way is he getting more than an hours drive away…”

Glad everything is okay!

Adding my good wishes for your son, WW; how scary. I’m sure he’s doing much better than you are right now :). I cling to the fact that even though my S is at a school 800 miles away, it has an excellent, multi-layered house system and is adjacent to a world class hospital. Then I shove the fact deep into the back of my brain and try not to think about it…

Hey everyone from HS class of 2012. Haven’t logged on for a few months cuz partner took a new job in Novato so we were busy setting up another home because I couldn’t bear to leave my DS and move to California! Actually that’s not the real reason. The house we rented is near the ocean( the best perk of that job) and the landlord only allows 1 cat. We have 3. So for the next two years I’m commuting. Ten days in C and the rest of the time in the Boston area . Hope you are all well. will catch up on CC prior threads ASAP. Remind me to tell you all about DS’s big complaint about Tufts.

I meant “bare”

No, I think you were right the first time: “I can’t bear to…”

Best of luck with that long commute! Start thinking about what you can do with those frequent flyer miles…

Brain freeze…

This what it must mean now that I’ m gasp… Over 50

What does it actually mean by “confirm final exam schedule”.

Many websites of the colleges mention that the final exam schedules have to be confirmed by the students with the instructors. Wondering what exactly this means?

Thanks

query123 – I think it’s as simple as, “make sure you and your professor have the same understanding as to when the exam’s going to be.” Sometimes, faculty types like to have a final on the last regular class day instead of at the published time during exam week.
